Basics: www.Sessions.edu is an online school, based in New York, teaching visual communication and new media courses. They are an accredited member of the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC) in Washington, DC and the first online school licensed by the State of New York Department of Education.

Sessions.edu has been awarded a "Gold Medal" by the Open University here in the UK in recognition of its ‘quality of authorship, academic integrity, content, interactivity, educational philosophy and goals, and design and functionality of site’.
They currently offer over 30 courses in visual communication and new media. In addition to individual courses, they run certificate programmes. Which consists of four required subjects and 5 elective ones. To date they teach to students in over 90 countries.
Courses run on a continual basis, completely independent of semesters, seasons or holidays. Each subject has it's own tutor, you can email any time you need assistance. They will also write to you commenting on all of your work. Students need to complete assignments, midterm and final exams in order to receive course certificates. Each subject has a deadline to complete, so its easier to stay focused than other online courses, where you start them, and forget all about them.
According to Sessions their certificate is recognised and acclaimed in the design industry as an indicator of a high level of design skills, technical proficiency and self-motivation.
Like Ciao, Sessions has a great community, and it’s encouraged to interact with other students and discuss yours and their work. As the course has an online portfolio, all the work you do is submitted to a central area, for everyone to look at and comment on.
Prices: ~ Individual course prices range from $89 - $400 ~ Certificate programmes (containing 9 individual courses) are a flat fee of $1599 ~They have recently added a Combined certificate (containing 14 individual courses), this allows you to combine larger subjects like Graphic design & Web design. Priced again at a flat fee of $2599. Luckily I got my work to pay for my course.
My opinion: I started my course, Graphic design certificate programme, 6 months ago and I’m half way through it. I’ve met some nice people, from all over the world, and been able to take a look at their work via the online student gallery. The work for each subject is usually split into 3 sections; Lesson 1,2 & 3 then finishes with a final exam. Which takes the form of a tick boxed survey. Some of the larger subjects contain 9-lesson sections; split in the middle with a midterm exam then again finishes with a final exam.
My Graphic design certificate programme is made up of: ~ Intro to Graphic Design ~ Colour Theory ~ Graphic Design ~ Branding and Identity
5 elective subjects: ~ Web Design 1 ~ Interface Design ~ Web Type Design ~ Banner Advertising ~ Web Animation
Finally: I’d spent many months looking for a course that could give me a good Graphic design grounding, although this one is a little pricey, I really would recommend it. After doing this course for 6 months it has given me the desire to continue training to be a Graphic Designer, so I’m off to Uni next year. (As a mature student, eek!) If the money is a little too steep, they do offer financial help, either a student loan, or paying in instalments.
Advantages: Convienence of distance learning. Some of the classes are great with inthusiastic instructors. Disadvantages: sometimes takes a long time to get a response on questions. Some instructors don't pay attention
great for a beginner wanting to start or expand a portfolio if you do not have access or time for classroom based classes. If you can get an in-person class you are much better off. Sometimes it takes up to a week or longer to get a response from the instructor on questions and lesson grading. I've also had instructor's grading the lesson for criteria in a previous lesson. More than once an instructor has not looked at all my work and gave me a poor ... ...see all of my work, or leaving only one or two sentences as a critique. On the other hand there are some instructors that are prompt and helpful leaving a very detailed critique and answering questions promptly so you can get on with your assignment, in these classes I have really learned a lot. It is really hit or miss. I will likely not take the more advanced classes at sessions, and look for a better value. With the recent tuition increases I ...

Quick review of sessions.edu
this school is good for the beginner, to intermediate person in any of the fields that they offer. A little pricey. The accredidation is nothing good. I am having to take community college classes to get into real college because none of the credits will transfer to school's that actually have good reputations. In this case, I would not recomend it for people trying to transfer credits. I would, however recomend it for people that want to learn a certain subject. Also look at Lynda.com!!!! ...
