I have been using SMS.ac (www.sms.ac) for quite some time now (over a year?). I have two good friends that I have met from this site, as well as a couple of dates ;)
They have a HUGE community of people in which you can join a particular group with the same interest base. Some clubs are slow, but some are pretty active (some are too active.. so, make sure you figure out what you want before you sign up). I was in about 25 SMS.ac clubs to begin with and after a year, I am in 4 clubs - all moderately active, which is great if you want to interact with people and really get to know people (inside and outside of your area). The also have promotions for free ringtones and free java games, etc.. They also have smsFlirt http://www.sms.ac/FlirtQuickSearch.asp and some other fun apps (they usually have something new on a monthly basis it seems).
Now.. you can also get some free messages/day, but you have to pay to receive after this. Be careful to sign up for too much, or you will have a spendy mobile bill. Once you figure out what you want, the service is easily worth the money. You can register here:

There are some similar sites that are also very good in regards to these services (about the same price). As far as lots and lots of peeps go.. SMS.ac seems to have the most.

Advantages: Maybe their free text but i never needed it to use it. Disadvantages: Difficult to use,forces you to give out your info and then uses it to get your money.Ingenuine

Advantages: Free texting, easy enough to navigate, 8 free texts a day. Disadvantages: Some features expensive, very slow loading, TERRIBLE background music!

Advantages: Get free texts for a month Disadvantages: Always sending you texts on your phone which cost you..when you cancel your account the texts dont stop
