Signing up is relitavely easy, but takes a while, as you have to fill in a lengthy survey. This may put you off, but carry on and complete it. It is worth it. You also have to put in your name and address etc, as you do with most online services.
The e-mail account is a POP3 account, which means that you can check it using programs like Outlook Express, and Netscape Communicator. They also provide a SMTP server for sending e-mail. They use a system called 'Pop before SMTP authentification', which means that you have to check your e-mail before you can send e-mail using their server. This is to prevent spam, and to keep the system as quick as possible.
There is also the facility to check your e-mail from their website, useful for when you are away from home.
The site is quite simple and easy to navigate, although the layout is sometimes not very well thought out.
When you sign up, you have to agree to recieve some advertising e-mails from softhome.net. This may put you off, but in the last year I only recieved about 10 of these e-mails, so it is no big problem.
The service is almost always avaliable, with very little downtime, and the servers are quick.

There's no such thing as a free lunch these days, but amazingly I've found something which runs pretty close in the shape of the glowingly beautiful SoftHome service - www.softhome.net.
I came across (sorry, mind's still bogged down by SPAM) SoftHome one evening when I was searching for a free e-mail service which you could use on Outlook Express via POP, but I was even more impressed when I found that you can also check ...

Advantages: Free, quick, not much spam Disadvantages: sometimes slow
Softhome provide you with free email address in username@softhome.net which can be accessed as POP3 from your mail client or online at the softhome site. This makes checking email on your home PC faster than checking it with hotmail and also allows you to check mail even on a PC without a mail client or where you dont want to have to set up your account for security reasons. Its servers are sometimes a little slow when you are recieving large number ... ...more for free. In my opinion a very good free mail client that beats hotmail hands down, but i may be biased as frankly i dont like hotmail. You can also store a large amount of emails on their servers so you dont need to be checking your accoutn every day in case some get pushed off. The site last time i checked too was well laid out and quite easy to naviagate ...
