Advantages Advantages Free, legal music on-demand.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None.

There are many great moments in the history of music reproduction and listening. A list of some of them might include Thomas Edison’s invention of the phonograph in 1877, Reginald Fessenden’s groundbreaking radio broadcast on Christmas Eve 1906, the introduction of the 'LP' record format in 1948, the first demonstration of the optical digital audio disc (CD) in 1976, the launch of “Napster” in 1999 and launch of Apple’s iPod in October 2001. To any such list must soon be added the public access launch of Spotify on 7 October 2008. The idea of Spotify is simple: to create a library of every ... more

Advantages Advantages Massive free music library, almost instant playback, free and legal

Disadvantages Disadvantages Some notable omissions, adverts, will it last?

Spotify is, in many ways, the legal music application users have waited for since the emergence of Napster (in its pirate incarnation) more than a decade ago. Whether or not it will last ten years itself is another question, of course. The title of this category is slightly misleading, incidentally, since for the most part it's unnecessary to go anywhere near the website itself once the initial download process is over, unless you want to upgrade to the paid version. I should say before going any further that I am reviewing almost entirely the computer-hosted version of Spotify here: recently ... more

Advantages Advantages Free music for all

Disadvantages Disadvantages You have to put with the odd advert, but very rarely

Join the musical revolution they said. The music industry will never be the same again. The world's music at your fingertips they raved....and then Napster closed down and we all had to pay for our music again. (Unless those less honest have failed to speak up!) That is until now - we can now, legally, listen to music for free without the hassle of any kind of US-led crackout on piracy...welcome to Spotify. First of all, those who haven't heard of it, fear not, as it's only been around since 2008 after being created by a team of whizz-kids in Stockholm, Sweden. Spotify was launched on 7 ... more

Advantages Advantages No cost, large collection of tracks, create playlists, simple to use

Disadvantages Disadvantages Ads can get a little repetitive

Spotify is a great way to listen to music for free. You can create playlists easily and it's a perfect way to listen to your favourite songs whilst doing homework or exploring the web. It takes minutes to download and then an icon appears on your desktop. You then double click, log in and start finding songs you want to hear. You have a specific log-in and password, so if another computer in the house or at a friend's house has Spotify, you can log-in as yourself and listen to your personalised playlists and song collection. There's a huge variety of songs to choose from and most songs are ... more

Advantages Advantages The ultimate music service

    Disadvantages Disadvantages No Cloud support

Spotify needs no introduction but I'm going to give it one anyway. Here it comes. Spotify is a cross platform music service which enables you to stream music for free. It also offers enhanced functionality for it's premium subscribers (I'm one of them). To use Spotify you'll need to visit the website and download the Spotify client program which suits your operating system. Currently Spotify is available for Windows and OS X with a beta version available for Linux although it apparently runs fine under Wine. You'll need a Spotify account too, this dictates what features are available to you ... more
