Buying a USED A3 1.8T

Advantages: Reliability, quality of build, performance
Disadvantages: Costly servicing, fuel economy low if pushed

...In March of 2004 I purchased a three year old, Y-reg Audi A3 1.8 Turbo-sport three door. The first thing that struck me with this car was the build quality and feeling of being in a very solid car. Despite being a smaller-sized hatch, this car has a surprisingly large amount of front space and a boot that could swallow whole families. Yes, the rear seats do have less leg room than you would expect in a car of this size, but the front sports seats cause this. In the non-sport model, the standard seats do allow for exra legs in the rear. The boot can comfortably hold three sets of golf clubs and if I collapse one side of the 2/3 split rear seats, six can easliy be squeezed in. The interior trim is fantastic, despite being three years old, this car doesn't possess a single rattle or knock from any corner or orifice. My model has...

New Model A4 1.8T

Advantages: Looks, performance, price
Disadvantages: ummm, nope, still can't think of any

...Thought it was time for an update seeing as I've had the car for over 6 months... I'd always had a thing about Audis, I'd love an S6 but the budget won't stretch, so the A4 was an obvious choice. Looking at the range I had the choice of the entry-level 2.0 of the 1.8T in either 2 wheel drive or Quattro. Comparing the performance the 2.0 pushes out 130bhp with the 1.8T raising this to 150bhp, simple choice then. Comparing this with the 3 series, the 318 offers only 112bhp, with the 320 jumping upto 170bhp, though the new model increases capacity to 2.3 litres. After test driving both variants I decided on the 2 wheel drive, though the brochure gives the same 8.4sec 0-60 time, the 2 wheel drive seems quicker, probably as the Quattro has the power being put out to all 4 wheels. I must say though that the Quattro definitely has the edge...

Audi A4 1.8T S Line 2004

Advantages: Driveability, Good Looks.
Disadvantages: Common Faults (But are not expensive to fix)

...Just upgraded to the Audi A4 1.8T S Line a few weeks ago from my Audi Cab 2.6 V6. I thought I was going to miss the power of the V6, how wrong i was!. The 1.8T with 190bhp is a quick machine and once the turbo kicks in you have hot hatch power in a saloon. These cars are ripe for tuning by way of ECU remapping, air filters, diverter valves and a number of other products which will increase BHP and torque. The S Line trim with the extra body deeper grill, spoiler, wide arches make the car look sporty without going over the top. On the interior the aluminum trimmings along with the half leather sports seat are classy and comfortable for long journeys. The suspension is stiff but solid on country road. Some things that go wrong in this model although these may have been rectified in the 2004 onward models are ignition coil...

Passat 1.8t 20v Sport.

Advantages: Big boot, Good motorway cruise missile, suprised in how cheap parts are.
Disadvantages: A bit thirsty, ride quality a bit soft. keep grouding on speed humps.

...is quite good on the motorway, very quiet, smooth but it gets a bit wishy washy on the back roads. I do find that on the sport models the ride hight is low and i am forever scraping over speed humps and kerbs causing a bit of damage to the nappy under the engine which does come loose if you don't keep an eye on it, and is a part of the cars aerodynamics. So make sure it's got one before you buy. Also check the suspension bushes on high mileage one's this can be expensive and there is a lot of them on the passat. The engine is a 1.8, 20 valve, Turbo charged unit which develops around 150bhp, its the same engine the Audi TT which runs at 225bhp. So the engine isn't under to much stress. The power is good, but i do find that it needs a bit of reving to get it goin...

Rover 75 1.8T Connoisseur 4dr LPG dual fuel

Advantages: Great car at rock bottom price, luxurious very cheap to run- 1992 fuel prices!
Disadvantages: Expensive tyres,

...I have owned a Rover 75 1.8T Conneseur, 2005 (54 plate) since 2006. I bought it for £7000 with 10,000 miles on the clock. (A saving of £16,000 against new with the extras this one has on it. It loads of extras like the 17" alloys, climate control, rear parking sensors, auto dimming mirror, rain sensors etc, trip computer and information computer. It even tells you when the brakes are worn or the screen wash is empty. I had mine coverted to an LPG fuel car with a toroidal tank in the spare wheel well. I get 34 mpg with it combined but pay about 2/5's the price. Made my money back after 1 year. Car is a great drive, plenty of power. Only problem has been the petrol fuel filter undoing itself, common problem. Really comfy car, I can't see how you can go wrong with one of these at the price. They were overpriced originally by about £3000-4000....

Audi A3 1.8 T Quattro

Advantages: Great build quality, lots of toys, pretty nippy and a name you can trust.
Disadvantages: Fuel consumption, fault on stereo and uncomfortable on really long journeys.

...with different road types (from motorway to twisty B roads) the average I got was around 25.8 mpg so it can become a little expensive! Also you need to watch out for a fault with the music system. When the car is cold the volume control does not work properly and is either extremely quiet or REALLY loud! This is a fault on all the systems but it does stop within about 20 minutes of driving the car. Overall, I would have to say the audi is a good car that I would definately reccomend to buy as long as your not doing long commutes in it! Very fun to drive and a beautiful cabin to sit in combined with the 4 wheel drive system and brilliant build quality you really can't go far wrong with this car....

passat 1.8t 20v love this car hate petrol prices

Advantages: fast, big, good looking list goes on.
Disadvantages: fuel consumption, rear suspension, seats, light steering.

...Why did I sell this car! I bought a passat because I needed a bigger car. I have always been into volkswagons so I know alot about the engines e.t.c. I started out by looking at the tdi to be sensible but saw a 1.8 20v on ebay which I payed £2200 for. My first suprise was how quick the car was, I knew it was 1.8 turbo but its a big car (bigger than some parking spaces). The fist few days i was driving it i was like a loony, how could a car this big go this fast. I then proceeded to take all my freinds out in it who were equally amazed. This car would give my golf gti a run for its money. After zooming the car around i realised i was going to the petrol station a hell of a lot, but i didn't mind cos i felt great when i was driving. You know the feeling you get when you are driving around in a nice car you are proud of...

Review of Volkswagen Passat 1.8T 20V

My Pride and Joy with a few mods,

Advantages: Great car, understated looks, performance, prestege
Disadvantages: Price, Fuel Economy ( who cares),

...Bhp enough for most people, then the next engine up is the 1.8T then this came in a variety of different guises, the basic was 150Bhp, then they did a four wheel drive Quattro with 180Bhp, and or course the best engine the S3 with 210Bhp on the early models and 225bhp on the later ones, of course they were both four wheel drive as well. The Interior The moment you sit in the drivers seat in the A3 you are immediately put at ease, the seats hug every part of your body, the seats in mine are Half leather so no boiling seats in the summer and cold in the winter they are just fine and look a lot better in my opinion then the full leather. On the outside of the seat is black leather then on the inside of the seat it is blue diagonal lines with black cloth, looks very nice and they look like Recaros. I love the gear knob it has a leather...

Views From A Post Box

Advantages: Supermodel-attracting reputation; great build quality; excellent engine
Disadvantages: Woeful four wheel drive system; jelly-mould looks

..., and therefore German, the TT strikes immediately with its impressive build quality and you can't help but be satisfied by the solid 'thunk' of the doors as they swing closed behind you, the sensation of the thick, sporty steering wheel in your hands, the precise engineering of the switchgear and the exacting engagement of the gearbox, each gear flitting neatly from one to the other with a rewarding connection of cogs and another throaty blast from the 1.8 litre engine. The TT immediately impresses with its pedigree and eminence. It sits proud on its haunches and its flowing lines give you the feeling that it's waiting to pounce on the unsuspecting BMW driver not checking his mirrors on the M1. Everything about the TT screams "success", and Audi wouldn't disagree with that statement. So successful has the TT been that it's barely had a facelift...

Review of Audi TT Coupe 1.8T quattro

Aha, not another audi bore mobile

Advantages: Very roomy and relaxing with quality feel and looks
Disadvantages: not very chuckable

...Three months ago i bought a two year old example Audi A6 1.8T SE.I must admit i hadn't considered this initially as i thought it a little too large for my needs. As i've now got it i can confirm, yes it is too large for me to justify as i have no family but what the hell i would never have suited a fiesta anyway. Where to start;aha the styling. Now you may disagree but i think this is a beautiful car with crisp lines and no fussy detailing and it looks really good in the 'metal'. Some could argue that it is too similar to the A4 and Passat but i would say 'Pah to you sir'. The performance; now this is where you think that the 1.8T isn't big enough to haul along a car of this size, but you're wrong. Granted the traffic light race is always going to be tricky, but a 0-60 time of 9.4 and top whack of 135mph is not too shabby, and added...
