Nikon D40x

Advantages: Small, feature packed, easy to use, Built in Help system, auto and scene modes
Disadvantages: only three AF points, manual not so good

...we can see the result straight away. I should say that I am not a professional photographer, more an amateur who wanted to get his hands on a Digital SLR and see what he could do. So this review will be from an average joe. I was originally going to purchase a Pentax K100d as it was the cheapest DSLR around and with anti shake, even though the Canon 400d and Nikon D40x did seem to be the market leaders. I then found that the K100d had been superceded by the K100d Super and the price had gone up closer to the canon and Nikon. I spotted an offer at Currys of a Nikon D40x with 18-55mm lense for £405 plus a 55-300mm nikon lense for an extra £30 and on top of that buy now (with no deposit) pay next september. I couldn't resist. I am glad the offer came around because in the end I think I would have had to upgrade the 6MP Pentax...

D40x

Advantages: Excellent image quality and build
Disadvantages: Average value for money, limited choice of lenses

..., where the camera decides everything including whether or not to use flash. After this are several creative modes, which largely change how the image is processed. Then come the manual modes, which offer enthusiasts more control. The D40x is an excellent option for first time DSLR buyers who want a camera that will grow as they grow as photographers. I would highly reccomend it, but if you cannot afford it would also reccomend the D40, a similar camera....

Nikon D40x DSLR

Advantages: Compact for an SLR, easy to use, excellent picture quality.
Disadvantages: Battery life only allows 1000ish photos to be taken

...a 10mp CCD instead of just 6mp. I had a play with the Canon EOS 500d and the Nikon D40x and decided that the D40x was a far nicer camera to hold and use and wasn't much more expensive (only about £20). Whilst I was in the store I decided it worthwhile (being as they would also work out cheapers) to purchase a few accessories for the camera: Lense Filter (UV) basically to stop anything damaging the lense, it's cheaper to buy a filter for a few £'s than a whole new lense. Tripod, I love taking night shots and timed exposures so this was vital. Accessory bag, big enough for any additional items in the future and lalso a smaller regular digital camera. 2gb Memory card, enough for 600+ photos Lense hood, for sunny days. Lense cleaning cloth, don't want to damage any of the expensive glass! After we'd paid for the camera...

Sony KDL-40X3000

Advantages: Accurate Colours, Deep Blacks, Great HD picture
Disadvantages: Below-par video processing, expensive

...This television, for me, offers essentially everything - but at a price. Aesthetics wise, it is excellent, the glass surround adding an extra element of design often missing in new televisions. There are plenty of connections available for use on the X3000/X3500, including HDMIx3 and Componentx3, and a USB slot. Generally, I feel the Television offers very good image quality via SD Freeview, Sky or Virgin Media. During fast action scenes such as sports, the video processing of the Bravia Engine Pro lets the set down a bit - occasionally pixelated areas appear. This can be improved by activating the 'MotionFlow 100Hz' feature available, but it cannot be truely eliminated. However, HD is, as is most sets, where the Sony shines. The picture quality on Blu-Ray discs and the PlayStation 3 is excellent, with little to no motion blurring...

MOBIL SUPER S 10W-40 SEMI-SYNTHETIC ENGINE MOTOR OIL

Advantages: SMOOTHER AND QUIETER
Disadvantages: NOT CHEAP

...Total (a well known petrol station here in the UK) which I have used in the past without any problems but unfortunately the price of Citroen's Total oil was £34.99 and well over my budget. I was beginning to get a little frantic on my Laptop checking all the local car shops to compare the prices, when my sister shouted out "Donovan have you checked out Halfords yet" I must say I hadn't thought of it. So I put on my Timberlands and walked (jogged) to my local Halfords store. Halfords had plenty of brands and blends of motor oil to choose from including there own make and also had 20% of all engine oil (which was music to my ears). After browsing the shelves there was one oil that shouted out at me and that was the high performance Mobil Super S 10W-40 Semi Synthetic motor oil 5L for £19.99. I have seen Mobil engine oil...

...I was looking for a twin cordless phone set, and bid for this set on Bid TV auction channel. I paid £20 + £6.99 p&p. They were delivered in 5 days to my door. The box was an attractive Blue with pictures of the Phones and the functions listed. Advantages: Light, over 10mp, takes SD cards

...My return to SLR photography after two "compact" digital cameras. THe D40x is amazingly light compared with my previous 35mm SLRs. The basic auto prgrammes are pretty well foolproof, you really have to be doing something stupid not to get decent results with this camera. What made me go for it .... 10.8 mp , takes SD cards, cheaper than the D80. If you go for the manual settings then you have to know what you are doing. The instruction manual is precise and fairly comprehensive. It does take a bit of reading and experimentation with the various settings. I have read quite a few reviews in the photography press and in general the D40x has been well received. I bought the Nikon "kit" which comprised the body, an 18-55mm lens and a 55-200mm lens all for less than £500 which I reckon was a good deal. There are still plently...

Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard

Advantages: Latest Release of Mac OS X; Cheap for those upgrading from Leopard
Disadvantages: No support for PPC processor (which is understandable, however)

Overall if your moving from Tiger to Snow Leopard, it may be worthwhile with some of its cool new features - and because Tiger is getting a little old if I may say so myself - nevertheless, I think its a worthwhile upgrade for Leopard users, at around £25/$29 its worth it for the long run. If your transitioning from a PC to a Mac with Snow Leopard, I'm sure you'll appreciate the graphically stunning interface although may take some time to get use to the differences. The major difference is the mouse tracking speed; each operating system uses a different tracking algorithm - Windows uses a different algorithm to Mac OS X. Mouse tracking / speed may take some time to get use to in OS X, due to OS X's different algorithm....
