Seagate Comes Out Top... Again!
Review of Seagate Momentus 5400.2 ST94813A 40 GB by
mattyprice4004
Advantages: Fast, Quiet and Efficient
Disadvantages: None
...I bought this drive as a temporary solution whilst I saved for a 100GB Seagate Momentus. It cost me a tiny £37.59, but proved to punch well above it's wieght for the money.
Firstly, lets look at the speed of this drive. It easily beats my desktop PCs backup slave drive, a 40GB Hitachi Deskstar. It also thrashed my 80GB Toshiba 2.5" hard disk in my other laptop (!) which cost me £75!
So the drive is up to the performance of even larger dirves, but what about the noise levels? Thankfully, noise is non-existent with the Momentus.
All that is audible is the occasional seek, but nothing much compared to the 80GB Toshiba 2.5" laptop hard disk. You can hear that on idle, and every tiny movement it makes is clearly audible. A real nightmare when you're trying to concentrate on a really important piece of coursework, or trying to enjoy some...

Seagate Momentus 7200.1 ST910021A 100 GB Review
Review of Seagate Momentus 7200.1 ST910021A 100 GB by
Jon_Farrimond
Advantages: Small, fast, large cache
Disadvantages: Expensive
...times. So overall it performs well. Seagate are a trusted manufacturer and have been around for a while. As far as I'm aware they have never made a bad device line, but then my HDD's of preference are normally Western digital.
The device uses an 8mb cache, this isn't a special as it used to be since many other 2.5"HDDs now use this amount but its still a plus point for the device. It runs a 7200RPM, this is about the same as many normal 3.5" HDDs but is quite fast for a laptop variant.
As I said before it is important to look at your need for this type of device, there are many other devices available that do the same job but for a far lower price. You should only buy 2.5" HDD's if you really need one and if you can't use anything else.
I bought this one new from Ebuyer for just over £100 inc VAT and delivery. Its now happily running...

Mediamax/Streamload Slow Upload Speeds
Review of mediamax.com by
chewyleopard
Advantages: Free
Disadvantages: Slow Uploads, Limited Download Capacity,
...Don't be fooled by the 25GB of free storage yes it's a lot of storage but trying to upload even small files is horrendously slow it's taken me 25 minutes to upload a 11mb file and I'm using broadband with a fast upload speed (connection not being used to by anything else) I switched from dial-up to broadband 5 years ago if I continue to use mediamax I will be regressing back to dial-up speeds,
Another thing to point out is with the free account you can only download 1GB per month so if I were to backup all my photo's music & docs and use all of the 25GB of free storage and needed to restore them to my computer I would either have to pay either $4.95pm 10GB download per month, $9.95pm 25GB download per month or $29.95pm 100GB download per month or wait over 2 years with the free account before I could restore all of my data...

The small but mighty VGN-C2M
Review of Sony VAIO C2M/W - Core 2 Duo T5500 1.66 GHz - 13.3" TFT by
miniminime456
Advantages: small, powerful
Disadvantages: short battery life
...imagine with the small size of the notebook.
The machine came with a 100gb hard drive, yet what still puzzles me is that before installing any other software on the machine, i only have 63gb available.
The ram in the machine so far seems perfectly adequate, and the machine has coped with ease at running 3 or 4 programmes at the same time.
I am dissapointed with the battery life. Roughly speaking when running on battery i am using 25% of it per half an hour, as you can imagine, this wont really get you very far on a train, or in a meeting.
Also supplied with the box, is an SD card adapter, this also accepts two other types of memory cards, and allows you to put the card straight into the machine, a particuly useful feature i feel.
This is a notebook which i have no regrets in purchasing....

Seagate Momentus, Good allaround.
Review of Seagate Momentus 7200.1 ST910021A 100 GB by
lowerboscadjack
Advantages: Speedy, High Capacity, Quite, good customer support
Disadvantages: Requires a bit more power than other laptop drives.
...If you are looking for a good hard disk for your laptop you are looking at the right line of Hard disk from Seagate, the Seagate Momentus is one of the best laptop hard disks out there, I have been using one for some time now and have had it never go wrong, the only down side to the disk the power consumption of it is around 1 amp (5 watts) usually and for most low end disks it is usually around 0.5 amps (2.5 watts), but this is down to the speed of which the disk spins at, a staggering 7200 RPM, for a laptop hard disk this is fast, as most hard disk for laptops only work at ether 4200 RPM or 5400 RPM. Since this hard disk has such a fast spindle, it means that it can read and write like 'Billy Stink' (old expression!)
The price for this disk isn't too bad considering that you are getting a high speed, high capacity disk that is nearly...

Top of the range
Review of Acer TravelMate 8104WLMi - Pentium M 760 2 GHz - 15.4" TFT by
Oridan
Advantages: Fast, Wireless, Bluetooth, Secure, Widescreen
Disadvantages: Low sound quality, Temerature problems(?)
...In the world of business laptops the Acer Travelmate series is probably the one most people would go for aside from IBM's Thinkpads. The whole Travelmate range has all the fantastic features of the Aspire series but without the baggage of the multimedia extras like 'aspire arcade' and the make your own movie programs. If you just want back to basics power then the 8104 is for you.
Packed with a 2.0ghz Mobile (which according to CSGNetwork equates to a massive 3.96ghz desktop equivilant *), and complimented by 1Meg L2Cache and 1GB Ram (DDRII) as standard it makes the basics of this machine quite difficult to comprehend.
Along side this lies a dedicated 128mb ATI X700 Graphics card (PCI-Express, www.ati.com), 100GB Hard disk (approx 25,000 mp3 files to put into perspective), IntelPRO Wireless G integrated, Full Bluetooth support...

my MacBoox Pro - simply fantastic...
Review of Apple MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo - 17\" TFT by
jinxx1
Advantages: Super wide screen, powerful CPU, good design
Disadvantages: keyboard could be bigger
...Having been using this laptop for a couple of weeks now, I have found it to be excellent! Having used many laptops over the years, I didn't think I would find one better than my (now 3 years old) Sony Vaio, but I think I have.
Sporting the Intel CoreDuo processors at 2.16GHz and 2GB RAM, it has plenty of umph under the bonnet. I chose the 100GB disk as it ran at 7200RPM. With all the supporting features of built-in DVD/RW Drive, Infrared Remote Control, Aiport (Wifi), Bluetooth, iSight Webcam, Gigethernet and loads of USB and Firewire ports, this is truly a machine which performs.
I have never actually used MAC OS X before, so didn't know what to expect, but have found it to be quite intutitve. I did actually buy this one with a view to installing Windows XP using Apple's Bootcamp. This allows you to easily partition the disk...

Hitachi TravelStar, What a Star
Review of Hitachi TravelStar 7K100 100 GB by
lowerboscadjack
Advantages: Quite, low power consumption, high capacity
Disadvantages: Expensive
...I have been using a Hitachi TravelStar for a long time now, I have had not problems with it and I have given it a good run for the price I paid for it.
I originally started out with the 80gb model of this hard disk. I had absolutely no problems with it. (I now have the 100gb model as the laptop it was in was broken in a car accident).
I had the 80gb model for a year and never gave me any trouble. It was:
· Fast
· Reliable
· Quite
· Super low power consumption
· Had a quick spin up time
· Very quick seek time
· Standard 5 year warranty
· Very helpful warranty/customer support
Hitachi's customer warranty claims support is like no other that I have come across before. You go onto there website, fill out a warrant claim form; package the device (hard disk in my case) in the way they require. Once you have sent it to them and they receive...
