A useful little CF card
Review of Altec Lansing Compact Flash CF 8 8 MB by
sjhill
Advantages: Small, handy size, good for a few photos, or important data
Disadvantages: Low capacity for modern cameras
...CF cards have to be one of the most boring things to write about, and they are all much of a muchness in terms of manufacturing quality and durability, so I'll be brief.
Altec have a good reputation, as far as I am aware, for products like these - and of the dozen or so of the memory cards I have, none have had any problems.
An 8MB card will hold approx 8 hi-res photos from a decent digital camera. This is obviously not a lot, but if you were doing portraits of people, or a few quick shots of certain places, keeping them on distinct cards could have its advantages.
Furthermore, just because you mostly see these being used by cameras, doesn't mean you can't use them for other things. I carry some important data - encryption keys, email address books, and important documents on one. You can use readily available (and cheap...

Winning the card wars
Review of Minolta SD-CF1 CompactFlash Card Adapter by
Kingseany
Advantages: Use 2 types of cards in one camera
Disadvantages: Pricey
...If like me, you've got a variety of cameras, using different memory cards, you sometimes wish there was only one format. Why? Because then you can just buy a load of cards all of the same sort, and they'd work in all the cameras. The Minolta SD-CF1 is an adapter for those with a whole load of SD (Secure Digital) type cards, who also have a CF (Compact Flash) compatible camera too. Why should I need to buy a 512Mb CF for my Minolta, when I have a perfectly good 512Mb SD card for my brand new Megxon? Well with this device, I won't of course.
Although it's made by Minolta, and Minolta themselves only advertise it as compatible with certain cameras in their own range, it will in fact work with a variety of other CF cameras, including Canon and Nikon.
It's very simple. You take your adapter, slot the SD card into it, then slot the whole...

(Compact) Flash In The Pan
Review of Bytestor HI Speed Compact Flash CF 1GB 1024 MB by
LegendaryMrDude
Advantages: Price, Capacity
Disadvantages: Reliability, Speed
...besides simple storage; how fast the files can be stored. This has seen the creation of various grades of CF where the speed of access is indicated by a multiple of 150Kb, so an 8x card has an access speed of 8 x 150Kb or 1.2Mb/sec. Regular speed cards are somewhere between 8x and 10x, High Speed is 20x (3Mb/sec) and ultra-High Speed are 40x (6Mb/sec).
That's the basics of CF out of the way, so on to the ByteStor card in question...
Advertised as a High-speed card with a 20x (3Mb/sec) access time with 1Gb capacity and coming in at only £65 from Amazon (and probably less after Christmas!) it was too good a bargain to miss. Equivalent cards from named brands sell for 3 times as much and surely there can't be that much of a difference?
Arriving in minimal packaging but with a typical snap-closed plastic case, it's a pretty standard Type...

Cf-18, Panasonic are making my life better!!
Review of Panasonic Toughbook 18 Touchscreen PC version - Pentium M 900 MHz - 10.4" TFT by
Matttheboy
Advantages: Tablet style flip screen, built in functionality
Disadvantages: ???
...Well after 3 years of working with the Panasonic CF-34 as an IT consultant with manual workers from another company I finally got to produce a build and play with some Cf-18's. There are many obvious advantages this machine has over it's predecessor, namely the available built in functionality (all at a price of course) plus the ease of use for those with the larger finger.
Options include integrated GPRS / GSM slot, WiFi & Bluetooth. Previously you would have to purchase individual cards for these functions which often ends up with a small part of card sticking out of the side of the machine, or an arial in the case of the GPRS / GSM cards. Now all these functions can be integrated within the device by Panasonic. All work well too, with the exception of the GPRS signal. I don't think the arial is very strong for the GPRS signal...

Don't let the unknown make put you off
Review of 10x50 DPS R (Porro Prism) by
Don_Rustone
Advantages: Nice sharp image, good field of view, duarable
Disadvantages: Slightly heavy, unknown make
...These binoculars are made by DPS, quite an unknown make in the UK and Europe. For once though, this doesn’t mean that the binoculars are lower quality, as one may expect. These binoculars, which I purchased for longer distances, as they have a nice 10X Magnification and a wide 50mm Field of View, have and still do serve me well for long distances and field work.
The binoculars provide a good magnification and field of view for the price, and provide a nice sharp and bright picture. This is especially good for longer distances were detail is very helpful, or at low light, were a bright picture is needed. Coming back to the quality, it is of a very high standard and well made. These binoculars will last for quite a long time; although after a few bumps they show ever so slightly signs of weakness. This is to be expected though, and I am...

Not 'fish n chip' - Syson chip
Review of SysOn CF Memory GPS by
trevorbrock
Advantages: Compact, highly portable, very effective, converts Ipaq's to Navigational systems
Disadvantages: High cost - especially if purchased in UK
...What It Is
The Syson CF Memory GPS is a combination of a Compact Flash memory card and a Global Positioning System.
It fits into any PDA that has a CF - compact flash - slot.
It is about 2" wide and 3.5" tall . Slotted into place, it extends the height of your pda by just over two inches.
What it does
=
In my case, this brilliant little product slots into the CF slot on my Ipaq hx4700 - see my Ipaq review if you need to know more about it .... in fact why not read it, even if you do not need to know more ??!
On the memory section of this product I have stored Destinator software, which has complete maps of UK, Ireland and Spain. There is room for more, and I will be adding France and other European countries once I get time. The model I have has 512 MB of memory, which will allow about 6 country maps...

Toughbook CF-34
Review of Panasonic Toughbook 34 - PIII-M 700 MHz - 8.4" TFT by
Matttheboy
Advantages: Fairly Robust, small, touchscreen
Disadvantages: Slow performance, some reliability issues
...for your average "hole diggers" fingers so typing may be an issue for some users. Battery life is reasonable (we got about 4 hours use from ours, and car chargers are available from panasonic to enable charging on the move.
Whilst you can drop these things on the floor and they'll probably still work, (and Panasonic claim you can drive over one with a landrover!) hard disks have had a fairly high failure rate but I guess all that banging around will upset the disk heads at some point. We have a bronze level support aggreement with Panasonic and any parts are replaced (at a premium obviously).
There were 10Gb hard drives in the earlier models (referred to as the Mark 2 by panasonic) where as the Mark 3 went to a 20Gb disk which was a bit more realistic.
Personally I wouldn't consider these unless you need them for hole digging or draft...
