HL-1250 - Speedy, reliable, inexpensive
Review of Brother HL 1250 by
pc-tech
Advantages: Print speed, quality, upgradability, price, reliability, quite small, easy to print on envelopes/small paper, Works under Windows XP
Disadvantages: Square design, 4MB memory not enough for some image printing, supplied drivers not excellent
...ones print with the right colours but do not have all features of the Brother drivers.
5. The famous flickering light problem. Every product that is released today seems to have one problem that everyone dotes on. This is the HL1250 one; when the printer is turned on, it makes the lights dim for a second approximately every half-a-minute. This is a true problem, but it only happens when the printer is actually on (it goes into standby after a couple of minutes), and I barely notice it now.
I would in no way count this against the printer.
OTHER COMMENTS
The upgradability of this machine is good - an extra 250 page paper tray can be added, bringing total paper capacity up to 500 sheets. An ethernet card can also be added for network connectivity.
I had to choose between this and an HP LaserJet 1200. I chose this because...

Heriot Watt University
Review of Herriot Watt University by
craigwstewart
Advantages: Excellent campus with superb facilities
Disadvantages: Nothing major
...It has been a little while since I posted a review and that is because I have just started university.
I am currently in my first year at Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh studying Mechanical Engineering. This review is based on my experience of the university. While at university I am staying on campus and therefore will be able to comment on the university, its facilities, the course I am doing and the accommodation.
Heriot Watt University has two campuses in Scotland. This review is only based on the main campus which is in Edinburgh.
Heriot Watt is the eighth oldest higher education institution in the UK. It was established by Royal Charter in 1966, but its origins date back to 1821 through the School of Arts of Edinburgh.
The name Heriot-Watt, commemorates George Heriot and James Watt. George Heriot was a renowned 16th...

Heriot-Watt Uni
Review of Herriot Watt University by
lc15
Advantages: Lovely Campus
Disadvantages: Some modules didn't seem relevant on course
...Four years ago, I left school and started the hunt for a suitable university to go to, however I was only really torn between two. This was because I knew that I wanted to move back up Edinburgh, and I also knew that I wanted to do Information Technology. This left Heriot-Watt (actually spelt with 1 ‘R’) or Napier – the two in Edinburgh that seemed to offer this particular subject. I was allowed to apply to six universities; however I ended up choosing some of these by shutting my eyes and randomly pointing my finger at the map! Oops, not really ideal is it…
Anyway, after looking at both of the Universities, I thought that Napier would be the best for me, since it was spread out throughout town and my first thoughts were that this would be exciting. However, after a guided tour around Heriot-Watt, I realised that practical should...

Watt: The Does and the Don’ts.
Review of Herriot Watt University by
Manx
Advantages:
Disadvantages:
...A massive percentage of first year students at Herriot-Watt are living on the campus. The first year is entirely geared up for these students. I am not simply talking about the Freshers’ Fayre. I mean things like the timetable. If you are looking at a fifty-minute bus trip in from Edinburgh (rush hour traffic, of course) then you are also looking at a very early rise if you wish to make the nine o’clock lectures. As most first years are on campus the timetable tends to give the first years these dreaded nine o’clock lectures. If you are a first year and you happen to live off campus - tough.
There is another problem with the campus. It is a lovely campus, it is pretty and clean (not counting the pond of chemical doom) but it is miles and miles away. If you have a part time job then you can find yourself right royally screwed...

TOM WATTS IS A LEGEND
Review of Tom Watt's 'The Season Ticket' (TalkSport) by
PHILPOT
Advantages: put your own views on air
Disadvantages: sometimes bias opinions towards different clubs
...This radio proggrame is one of the best ive come across yet. This station is a must for all football fans. It gives a chance to every football fan to voice their opinions on air. It makes for great entertainment when the likes of Tom Watts decides to disagree with viewers comments. Although Toms viewpoints can sometimes be taken to the extremes i find him someone who is a good laugh and has a wide range of knowledge on football.
It gives people like u and me i.e really soccer fans, a chance to hear what other people think on subjects. Football to me is all about the supporters otherwise the beautiful game woulod not be what it is now. Listen out for it on talksport and judge for yourself....

wireless and seamless connection - Almost
Review of BT Home Network 1250 by
mike.lewis
Advantages: many connection methods
Disadvantages: couldn't get the USB connection to stay configured
...be installed on the main PC via USB rather than ethernet.
I tried various places and most of the offerings I found had wireless and ethernet connections but not USB. I just didn't fancy having to buy an ethernet card opening the PC and then installing it - I preferred the easy option of plug and play so I kept looking.
On the BT website I came across various options that seemed to fit however the BT voyager 1250 home network seemed just right but a tad too pricy at £159 just to connect up the one PC, you then had to add the wireless adapters for the two other PC's - nope, too expensive so I kept looking and got precisely nowhere.
Back to the BT website. Lo and behold they had an offer on - the price of the 1250 had dropped to £99.99 - wonderful. Off I go and order it through the website. Order over the internet - easy convenient and so on - Yes I...

Perfection from Epson
Review of Epson Perfection 1250 by
Martinscholes
Advantages: Very good scanner
Disadvantages: None I have found
...I work in publishing and I need to scan photographs and documents for inclusion in magazines, newspapers and books that the company publishes.
I find that the Epson Perfection 1250 has the quality that is required for the job.
The scanner is easy to use and provides high quality scans every time that I use it.
It works well not only as a scanner of photographs but also works well with several different types of OCR software that I have used in my working life.
The thing that I like about the Epson Perfection 1250 is that it is easy to use. It really is just a matter of clicking on the desktop icon and following the onscreen instructions.
A question that many people might ask is: "would a flatbed scanner of this type really be suitable for the publishing industry?"
The answer has to be "yes." The company I work...

Finally, a router less complicated than its name
Review of BT Home Network 1250 by
t3Cougar
Advantages: Four methods of connecting computers, extremely easy to set up, good technical support, PS2 and X-box enabled
Disadvantages: Wireless strength could be better, only one ethernet port, old wireless technology, price if you insist on buying it from BT directly (can get it for around £45 though)
...Bill Gates announced that the year 2005 was going to be the year of home networking, at the start of April, is little sign of this being achieved. The reason for that this is people are daunted by the jargon of routers, Ethernets, DMZ functions, proxy servers, CAT5e and RJ-11s. Thankfully, we’re one step closer with the BT Home Network and1250.
I think that the best thing about the router is that it is just so simple. BT have designed a setup menu, which looks identical to a web site. It is modern, and contains all the information about the router that you need, and also gives you information about the computers networked to the router.
---Connectivity---
There are four ways of connecting computers:
- Ethernet – this is the usual cabling that you get for networking two computers directly to each other. The advantage...

Oh Brother
Review of Brother HL 1250 by
wulise
Advantages: Great print quality, also economical.
Disadvantages: Not a Colour printer!
...I first saw the Brother HL-1250 Laser Printer at Office World. (I know many people do not like this shop, but I found the staff very helpful on the day I visited).
Back to the printer. This printer system is computable with Epson, IMB, PCL6 and Windows emulation. The Windows drivers include features such as a ‘quick print set-up’ (allowing control of the print settings on the task bar) and ‘on screen help’. This copier is ideal to use within a professional environment, daily. It produces excellent print quality, whilst being economical enough to use at home as well. The Brother HL-1250 Laser Printer is versatile, being very fast yet reliable. Paper saving, power and toner saving facilities also help to make this machine a viable option for all needs. The print quality is impressive too, giving a crisp and clear graphic quality. It has...

movies on the move!
Review of Shinco SDP 1250 by
thebigc1690
Advantages: large screen and extensive features.
Disadvantages: more expensive than some!
...Being a lover of gadgets I had been toying with the idea of getting myself a portable DVD player for some time, however I really didn't need one as I obviously wouldn't use it at home and when on holiday or whatever I have my multimedia lap top. So just how would I convince my fiancée of the need for this gadget, easy my four year old son who gets very bored on long car journeys would just love one!
So after persuading her of this fact we set off to look for a cheap portable DVD player. The idea of getting a cheap one went out my mind completely when I saw the Shinco SDP-1250. We had agreed that we would spend no more than £100 because there were so many cheap ones out there but this had so much more going for it not least its looks.
Most of the others we had looked at were all very similar and not too pretty to look at...
