Chess - best travel version
Review of Chess by
aimlow
Advantages: very magnetic, and safe storage space for pieces, and surface
Disadvantages: none
...it excellent value for money.
The pieces are the standard Staunton version in well-moulded plastic in cream and black at a comfortable travel size. The heights of the pieces start from 1.5cm (the Pawn) to 3cm (the King). The board size for play is 13.5 by 13.5cm with black and yellow squares, and correct grid notation of letters and numbers on all four sides.
At each player's end is a sliding storage drawer to keep the pieces in safely. When you close the drawers the board folds in half clipping firmly closed into a neat case and thus keeping pieces and play surface safe. If one accidentally drops the game, which it has been with my children, the case stays shut and thus we have not lost any pieces or damaged the play surface. Even the outer casing has not cracked, even at the hinges. Even though the game stays firmly closed it is easy to open...

Great little hifi
Review of Kenwood HM-332 by
mattgarvey
Advantages: Great price, plenty of features
Disadvantages: None
...This micro hifi system from Kenwood is now about on the web for just £135, which makes it a great deal.
Its available in a range of colours: silver, silver and blue, and yellow(!). Its very small at just 20cm or so tall.
It has a front loading CD tray, so is good for placing in bookshelves where you cant afford the head room for a top loading CD.
Its LCD display is not overly featured. There's no equaliser display, but otherwise its clear and there are two levels of illumination intensity. The display is actually mounted on the front of the cassette tray, which moves out and up when you load a cassette. A bit odd and I hope it wont breakdown.
The radio is RDS, which is handy. The remote has got lots of features and many of the controls are only available on the remote.
For the price a great little hifi for a bedroom or study...

Nothing special
Review of Nikon 18 - 135MM G IF-ED / 3,5 - 5,6 Lens by
cornzee
Advantages: Price in relation to quality
Disadvantages: Nothing exceptional about it
...and manual, with a manual override in auto mode. Focusing is from as close as 45cm from the subject through to an infinite focal range. A lens hood is provided which is flower shaped and work well in minimising image distortions from stray and unwanted light.
Price
At £300 this is a reasonably priced lens. There is decent zoom on it and a decent wide angle too, handling is okay and generally for the price the lens performs better than you would probably expect. However, it doesn’t totally excel itself and if you want a really top lens you will have to fork out – otherwise this will be absolutely fine, especially if you’re not after the very best lenses which come at the very highest prices…
Overall
Nothing exceptional but a good lens overall that comes at a highly reasonable price. However if you are after a great lens then you...

3Com OfficeConnect Dual Speed Switch 5
Review of 3Com OfficeConnect Dual Speed Switch 5 - switch - 5 ports by
matt_fantastic
Advantages: Simple, dual speed, small size
Disadvantages: Only 5 ports (?)
...Not much to say about this really. I bought this for a pound (!) on Ebay to connect to my router giving me 4 more ethernet ports to connect stuff to my network. That's all it does, gives you more connection; there's no firewall, DCHP, nothing, but then that's all in my router.
Its 5 autosensing ports (Ethernet 10Base-T/100Base-TX - RJ-45)automatically detect the speed of the attached device to maximize network performance - with a data transfer rate of up to 100 Mbps.
It really was a "plug-and-play" installation with no configuration needed, it connected straight into my network - I didn't even ned to read the manual ! The auto-sensing feature means that you can plug the "in" cable into any socket - another 3Com switch I have has a specific "in" port.
It's nice and small (Weight 0.6 kg, Height 4.2 cm, depth 13.5 cm, Width 22.8 cm...
