Desktop Computing at its best
Review of Apple iMac Indigo - PPC G3 500 MHz - 15" CRT by
Spike5792
Advantages: Excellent design, power and performance packed into one.
Disadvantages: Empties your bank account
...Mac. This stylish design is a work of art, an amazing technical engineering feat. It is something to be admired and adored. Enter the new iMac. The new generation of computer design. Apple is once again leading the computer industry in the most innovative designs.
The new iMac has a built in 15” LCD flat screen with a brighter, sharper screen than that of a CRT. The screen is attached via an arm which is adjustable so that it suits your sitting position and eye level. With a simple nudge you can accurately adjust the position to the optimal angle.
Where is the rest of it you ask? The amazing engineers back at the Apple labs have managed to cram everything you need into the 10.6 inch base below the screen. The new cosmetic facelift of the iMac doesn’t stop at the surface. A complete overhaul of the engine under the bonnet has been done...

Compaq V55 - End of the road for 15" CRTs?
Review of Compaq V 55 by
gusgusrule
Advantages: Cheap, relatively small, does everything a monitor should do
Disadvantages: bland design, old fashioned,
...for a monitor, yet on ebay I've seen these go for as little as £10 or £20, now thats a real bargain! In comparison with todays monitors, 15" TFTs are about £200, so under £60 seems a fair price for a CRT.
-----------------
AVAILIBILITY
-----------------
This is certainly a weak point of the monitor, particularly recently. After browsing the web I found about one or two retailers that actually stocked this monitor! The thing is people just dont want 15" CRTs anymore, when we bought this back in 1997, they were as popular as ever, but now retailers, and even manufacturers themselves are gradually fading them out, or stopping making them. Take PC World for example, all their PCS come standard with a 17" CRT or 15" TFT, no one seems to want 15" CRTs anymore. PC World offer one 15" CRT which is just £37.00! Such a massive store and they only...

Expected CRT quality
Review of Samsung SyncMaster 753 S by
adehh
Advantages: Cheap, easy to use, good quality
Disadvantages: It's a CRT!
...I don't use the monitors max resolution - besides 17" really isn't big enough for this sort of resolution in my opinion.
Surprisingly the monitor is relatively small for a CRT, I think it's the smallest CRT monitor I've ever had and that's being compared to a line of 15" moitors! Of course it still takes up the majority of the space on my desk but I'm still waiting for TFT monitors to drop in price before I decide to buy one.
The base of the monitor is a circle shape and seems to be quite sturdy. I can fully adjust the monitor and it can point up at a fairly high angle and can near enough rotate the monitor on a full 180 degree turn from a centre point indicated by an arrow on the base. The casing for the monitor is nicely curved in and doesn't have that age old 'blocky' look expect from CRT monitors.
The monitor came complete...

Better than those CRT, BIG BOXES.
Review of Philips FLAT PANEL 150S by
Pisces1977
Advantages: A space-saving, valuable flat-screen 15" TFT monitor.
Disadvantages: Screen gets bright if you're higher than the monitor; gets dark when you're low, balanced when you're on eye-level.
...screen size (pixels), the image is smooth and it is quite different than 40hertz (or less) CRT monitors.
This monitor comes with a power pack (transformer) to suit the monitor's power and wattage needs.
The monitor itself has a power-on switch with dual-colour LED (green, orange). It has a MENU button to allow the user to set the brightness, contrast and colour.
Adjustments of the screen "position" can also be accessed from this menu, but you cannot adjust the screen "size", as it is already set by factory-default (leaving 1.5mm from screen edges).
The monitor is fully adjustable; you can tilt it from left to right, up and down. The cable that connects to the PC is 1.5 meters, long enough if you like to reach your system at arm's length (on desk or below).
If this will be your first TFT monitor, it will be a little weird when...

The new iMac
Review of Apple iMac Indigo - PPC G3 500 MHz - 15" CRT by
m_marcel
Advantages: Easy to use, space-saving design, easy setup and flexibility
Disadvantages: (perhaps)price
...The new iMac looks like a computer from another planet. Its space-saving design allows for easy setup and amazing flexibility. With the touch of a finger, you can freely move the superslim active-matrix display to change its height, depth, and angle for the most comfortable and personalised viewing imaginable. Whatís more, the flicker-free display delivers nearly the same viewable area as most 17-inch CRT displays, with twice the brightness, sharpness, and contrast. And unlike most other flat-panel systems, communication with the display is always digital, so you get a distortion-free image that never needs adjustment. All this makes iMac extremely easy to use, creating dynamic presentations, or playing your favourite game.
Inside lives a PowerPC G4 processor with Velocity Engine for ripping CDs, making movies, playing games...

Still Holding It's Own
Review of HP Pavilion 6712 - C 667 MHz - 15" CRT by
waynehorrigan
Advantages: Reliable, looks stoosh, lasted over 4 years of daily use
Disadvantages: 4.5 years old and beginning to show
...'s the original spec:
-Windows 98
-566 MHZ Celeron processor
-15GB hard drive
-Standard floppy drive
-CD-ROM drive (not CDR or CDRW!)
-64MB of memory
-Standard 56k modem
Here are the software and accessories that came with mine:
-Lexmark Z12 ColourFine printer
-Standard
-MS IE5
-MS Works 2000
-101/102 Internet ready MS keyboard
-HP mouse
-HP Pavilion M50 monitor (review to follow)
WHAT CAN I DO ON IT?
Everything you want to do, really. The 15GB hard drive can store enough information for even daily users like myself. I tend to download a lot of music and I currently have about 160 (legal!) songs at 3mb each. I have installed about 75 programs from Kazaa to Photoshop on it and there's still about 7.2GB free. It came internet-ready and was bundled with a load of useless software...

I mac but not everybody should
Review of Apple iMac Indigo - PPC G3 500 MHz - 15" CRT by
forestparks
Advantages: Compact, fast and reliable
Disadvantages: Small screen, limited updating capabilities.
...My job means that I use my imac and other macs on a daily basis.
I have come to love the machines due to their general reliability and ease of use.
The old style imacs can be obtained for a modest price at the moment with alot of places selling off old stock in favour for the newer models. Its best to check a mac magazine such as Mac User or Mac World or the internet for latest prices. They all contain a 15" monitor, a G3 chip of various speeds and are avaiable in various colours.
The imac comes with a host of software to get you started. The OS that comes with it (OS X) is a newish very stable operating system. Its also very pretty and has lots of little gadgets to keep you amused. However for serious users these can be turned off.
Other main software includes Apple Works which is an Microsoft Office style product with a basic...

Good value and very stylish
Review of Apple iMac Indigo - PPC G3 500 MHz - 15" CRT by
ranter
Advantages: Good looker. No big bundles of wires
Disadvantages: Not too many computer games available
...The Apple iMac is a very different looking piece of hardware from the usual run of the mill PC.
With a normal PC you get a beige coloured box, that clashes with every other bit of furniture you have in the room, but the iMac just looks so good that you’d almost want to put it on a desk right in the middle, where everyone can see and admire it.
For a start you have the colour scheme.
It comes in a very attractive two tone green and grey plastic. The latest models come in an attractive blue colour.
All the computer’s components are built into the 15-inch monitor, so there’s no having to hook up loads of different wires.
There’s a handle on the top so you can move it easily all around the house, a keyboard, and a mouse, and that’s your lot.
It’s the nearest thing you’ll get to a plug and play...

The NEW LCD iMac
Review of Apple iMac Indigo - PPC G3 500 MHz - 15" CRT by
iMacfan
Advantages: Very good screen - fast G4 and Superdrive!
Disadvantages: You might not like the iLamp look
...For those of you who don't know, on January 7 2002, Apple announced by far the greatest development of the iMac : the LCD flat-panel iMac.
The design is extremely cool - it looks sort of like an anglepoise lamp, holding all the innards in a 10" diameter hemisphere base, with the 15"LCD screen on tilt and swivel arm, which is extremely easy to adjust.
But wait - the innards are really something to shout about. All iMacs now have a G4 processor - an extremely efficient processor that means that the 800Mhz version is easily as fast as much faster AMD and intel offerings. Graphics also have recieved a great boost with a GeForce2MX chipset and 32Mb of DDR ram. It also sports up to 1Gb of RAM, and the top of the line comes with a 60Gb hard drive.
Note that while many PCs are bare-boned - this really is fully featured, coming...
