Ford Escort 1.6 16v Estate mkV

Advantages: Cheap to buy, cheap enough to run, cheap insurance, space.
Disadvantages: Rust, comfort and looks

...steering. The 16 valves certainly made a difference especially if you only ever owned 8 valve cars. The petrol consumption was quite good until I started getting problems 2 years later. The acceleration is quite slow at about 11 seconds but i'm sure if you try you will beat that by a second or 2. As it is an Escort 1.6 16v EFI engine, you can add upgrades to give you a bit more of a performance boost than standard. I found using Redex in petrol tank and now and again directly into combustion chambers improved performance as well as giving the pipes and engine a good clean out. Very easy to do, just remove spark plugs and pour some in through the spark plug hole, put the park plugs back but not ignition leads, start engine a few times and then connect leads(this will smoke alot for a mile or so or simply run car for a few mins on your drive...

Living with a 1.6 16v Clio

Advantages: Good level of Trim. Good Fuel Economy

The first problem I had was an intermittent fault with starting the vehicle, so I had a mobile tuning company come to check the ECU. Ford Focus 1.6 Zetec

Advantages: A great car from all angles
Disadvantages: Not as many extras included as I would have liked

...I am now the proud owner of a ford focus 1.6 zetec and for the first time in many years I have actually found a car that pretty muc suits all my needs. I have spent many a time in cars that are too big, too small, not suitable, not comfortable etc but this is everything I could ask for. I own the three door version but the doors open widely and when the front seat is moved forward there is plenty of room to get anyone in the back, even my mother in law who is disabled. The back of this car is extremely spacious, comfortably fitting 3 large adults in. The boot size is deceiving in that it looks pretty small but is very spacious indeed. Perfect for all those shopping bags as well as a childs pushchair. The actual drive of this car is superb. Mine runs on unleaded and is very economical. I can get over 200 miles to £35...

Ford Fiesta Si 1.6 16v

Advantages: Nippy, Great looks, Reliable, Fantastic handling and Ford's best interior. Ultimate hot hatch!
Disadvantages: Can rust, similar to any Fiesta really.

...a corner, you can feel exactly how the car will respond, as you are cornering, and you can feel if and when you're going to lose it, but from my experience it's proven to be extremely forgiving! The 1.6 litre 16v zetec happily purrs underneath the bonnet quite happily minding it's own business when driving sensibly, but if you plant your right foot, the melody can be heard for miles, and the sound is nothing less of the finest music - it has a real throaty roar, and you can constantly feel the torquey engine pulling and pulling. Most of the power is in the high rev range being 16 valve, and it will happily rev up to 6,500rpm in every gear. It was always much quicker than the figures on paper for the 1.6 16v - it's performance far exceeds the recorded 0-60 times and top speeds - on my Si that was 13 years old I recorded a clean 8.5 second 0...

Many reviews here don't seem to distinguise whether it is the phase 1 or phase 2 models. Phase 1 models are usually 8V whereas the phase 2 models are 16V and have a slightly different front and back styling. ...Two years ago I decided to buy a brand new car, and after much research I decided upon the Ford Focus 1.6 (old style now). Everything I had read pointed towards a really good choice. So I went into my local Ford dealer and a week later I had my nice new car. First thoughts were a good looking car, well built, fantastically smooth to drive, held the roads amazingly well. All of the equipment worked wonderfully well and I absolutley loved my new car. Then the problems began.... After two weeks the Airbag Modulator failed, so I went back to the dealer, and they replaced the faulty part within a few days. They wouldn't let me have a courtesy cat so was left hanging around the dealers for a few hours. All work was under warranty so no cost to me. Three weeks after the Modulator fault I was washing the car and noticed tiny rust spots...

...My boyfriend bought this car in June 2006 (it was 1 year old at this point). He pays almost £900 for insurance with Arnold Clark (whom he bought it from - he was aged 22 at the time). That's fully comp, and includes business class 1 terms, so for his first car and own insurance policy (no other drivers), I think it's not too bad (insurance group 6). Elephant.co.uk have offered him a quote of almost £650 with 1 years no claims. Again, not too bad. I drive the car on occasion. It's maybe a bit slow off the mark (it can feel as though the gear grinds between 1st and 2nd), however, other than that it goes through the gears with ease. ...I purchased this car 2 months ago having traded in my 2003 SEAT Ibiza TDi Sport which was giving me trouble. Because I had been used to the 130bhp and almost 50mpg the Ibiza gave me I wanted something different, but still with these attributes. So, I opted for the 1.6 HDi version of the 307. This gives 110bhp, and although its 20 bhp less than the Ibiza the power delivery is much smooth and more progressive. The 307 HDI is a full blown turbo, so it doesn't suffer nearly as badly from "turbo lag", meaning it pulls well in all gears from as low down as 1000-1200 rpm. It is also incredible quiet when stood as it ticks over at less than 800 rpm (meaning you don't sound quite so much like a tractor as other diesels) The 307 is a mid-sized family car and will easily seat 5 people (even the 3-door version I have - its very easy to get in...
