XIOD 17in Flat Panel, superb budget LCD monitor.

Advantages: Great picture, very stylish, very small footprint, good value.
Disadvantages: Tricky to clean, unknown brand.

...I'm writing this review in front of my Xiod IM17SM flat panel monitor which I am absolutely over the moon with. I don't know how I ever coped with CRT! I had been looking into LCD monitors for a while due to a lack of space on my desk and the general ugliness of my existing CRT but was obviously put off by the price and wasn't really sure about picture quality of LCD screens. I was pretty sure my £230 budget wouldn't accomodate anything larger than a 15" screen (which would have been a little smaller than my CRT) but I was prepared to make the sacrifice. When I saw this monitor up for sale on eBay, I thought well why not, it has to be worth a go. I did a little research into the Xiod brand and found that it is a budget subsidiary of Samsung, who I knew made decent LCD panels. Whacked in a bid and won the monitor for £215...

...This 17 inch model of Dell's Flat Panel range provides excellent image quality even when using the analog over the digital input. On the downside, it's not the most aesthetic of monitors, and as pictured, you can't move it from the position it starts in. You can tilt it up and down, but the height is locked, and rotation left and right requires total repositioning of the base. Quite large for a TFT, it does seem to take up far more desk space than it should (almost 9 inches deep!). Installation was a breeze - literally just plug and play. Windows can treat it as a plain old VGA monitor until the dell specific drivers are installed (which you don't have to do if everything seems to be working fine anyway). ...I recently upgraded my office computer display to a flat screen. The choice wasn't large but the quality of the products on offer was superb. I choice the Belinea 10 17 10 TFT flat screen, resolution 1280 x 1024 with built in speakers, because it looked professional and was the most cost effective I could find. I have been using the display for 1 week now and cannot fault it. Although it is not until you see a traditional monitor that you appreciate the desk space being saved. Indeed my desk looks less cluttered with just as much 'work in progress' as before. Tip – Read the instructions that come with the panel. It does not come with software, which must be downloaded from the web site but at least that ensures the most recent versions.
