PS3 slim

Advantages: Blu-ray, free online, nice extras like vidzone & iplayer. Almost silent operation
Disadvantages: Rubbish controller, still expensive, online nowhere near as good as xbox live

...Well, had the slim for a few weeks now (my 1st ever playstation), personally, I'm a little underwhelmed by it, I've been a gamer since the nintendo game & watch days & owned @ least 1 of the current gen consoles since the Mega Drive(Genesis). Graphically the system has the potential to wipe the floor with the 360, but this is really only going to apply to PS3 exclusives as any software house making a multi-platform game is going to be as cost effective (lazy) as possible & use the same graphics on all the games where possible(ok, they need to dumb them down for the Wii). My problem here is that I have yet to get a game for it that runs in 1080P, they all seem to be in 720P! Why???? I'm sure they are out there, but I haven't found one yet. I guess this is down to most HD tv's being HD ready rather than Full HD. Sound-Yeah, ok...

Playstation 3

Advantages: Cheap Blu-Ray player, great graphics, free wifi, internet browser
Disadvantages: Expensive, some games are better on 360, 40 GB model doesn't have backwards compatability

...and is not noisy at all. Compared with most audio-visual equipment this is really good value for what it does and the hard disk is easily upgraded without voiding the warranty (SATA 3.5" disk I think - which are cheapish). If you are a pure hardcore gamer then the software has been a mixed bag in 2007. 360 wins here so far. A few stellar exclusives (resistance, motorstorm and more recently R&C, Unchartered etc..) and a few very good third party products (cod 4, oblivion) and some problematic ports which are apparantly much better on 360/PC (e.g. orange box). This is the reason for a 1 point drop. I am not too bothered as I only have time to play about 5 titles a year thoroughly. 2008 is likely to be much better on this front with some (in all probability) very good exclusives UT 3 (timed), FF series, MGS 4, Gran Turismo, Killzone 2, Little...

PS3 Sixaxis Controller

Advantages: Battery Life / Charge Times ; Nice Size
Disadvantages: Squeaking / Sticking

...4-5 hours I would say without needing re-charged and once they do it only takes about half an hour for full battery life to be resumed. For me the actual sixaxis function isn't that important. Unless a PS3 version of Wii Sports comes out then I don't see that much use for this function. Virtua Tennis allows sixaxis to be used, but you also have to control the player by tilting the controller, which is very difficult. The actual controller itself is very lightweight, but you will get used to this very quickly. The buttons are easy to press, but I do have to minor problems with the buttons. At one point the X button was sticking on one of the controllers, but this fixed itslef. The other thing I have noticed is that the L3/R3 buttons are harder to push than the new Dualshock 3 controller, which I bought because of the squeaking...

Advantages: An amazing machine, expandable, some great features
Disadvantages: Expensive (but for a reason), almost internet reliant, no browser security

...of the games it really shows. The only major drawback at the moment is the price. A bog standard Xbox 360 is around £100 cheaper than a PS3, but then again it's not so readily expandable. There is also the issue of it being both almost reliant on the internet and the fact that the browser is insecure from the point of having no free parental controls. These are issues that I feel Sony need to really address. I wouldn't part with my PS3 for love nor money as I love it to bits and has been a massive source of entertainment. It's worth the extra money you pay for it due to the quality of the games and the sheer power inside it, not to mention the fact that it's also a blu-ray player.
