Ken's Challenge - APS Film in a nutshell
Review of APS-Film by
Morgenhund
Advantages: foolproof loading, mid-roll changing
Disadvantages: more expensive to develop/process
...APS Film offers more versatility over traditional 35mm film, with 3 different picture formats, coming usually in 25 or 40 exposure reels. Developing and processing, particularly in panoramic mode can be more expensive than 35mm film. Index prints are standard, and negatives remain in the cartridge. They are foolproof to load, and can often be changed mid-roll. If travelling abroad, then stock up as availability in remote locations is not that good. APS Disposable cameras are now available too, offering good results, perhaps worth trying before buying an APS camera....

Sony DSC-R1: Who needs an SLR?
Review of Sony Cyber-shot DSC-R1 by
jstephenson
Advantages: Picture quality, features, picture quality and picture quality
Disadvantages: Not really compact, accessories can be expensive.
...This camera provides SLR quality without the risk of dust getting on to your sensor. The lens is loads better than any of the cheap ones with D-SLR kits and the zoom range is wider too. Kit lenses tend to be 18-55mm (= 28-80 35mm equiv) This one is 24-120 (35mm equiv.) The range of features is stunning too. You can hold an exposure and adjust the shutter aperture combination with the turn of a wheel and you can even pick an auto-focus point that you can move around with the 4-way controller. You can zoom digitally twice the optical focal length (240mm 35mm equiv) with minimal loss of quality or if you are not using the full 10Mp you can set the zoom to go to the maximum possible without any loss of quality. This is the equivalent of taking a 10Mp image and cropping it to the Mp value in use ( so you get more magnification at 2Mp than you...

No need for Digital, Film can be seen on PC too
Review of Nikon Coolscan V ED by
Lessthanemma
Advantages: Quick and Easy to use
Disadvantages: None
...This device is for anyone using a film camera but want there images on PC without purchasing a digital camera. So you can still use the same camera you have used for all those years. Also with the negatives you have kept from years back you can put them onto PC. Its quick and easy to use, just put the film in and it scans it through.
The Nikon Coolscan IV ED offers an ultimate in professional film scanning technology. It is a desktop scanner which offers a super-fast throughput when scanning 35mm strip film or mounted 35mm slides at upto 2900 dpi optical resolution. That means it produces an image on the PC of in excess of 12 megapixels from a 35mm frame, which means you can create an image which can be printed onto an A3 page in full photo quality. Digital ICE technology is built in, it consists of Digital IC (Image Correction...

A great product, enhanced by ease of use.
Review of Epson Perfection 3590 Photo by
nemo183
Advantages: So easy to use, gives excellent results....
Disadvantages: Not fast, designed strictly for home use.
...Apart from being a good scanner, this product is aimed at anyone who also wants to scan 35mm film. On the box Epson suggest this is "quick and easy". For once this claim is accurate, and even lives up to the Epson "Exceed your vision" hype.
Installation:
Everything comes on one CD, and the procedure worked first time. As ever, it's worth following the installation instructions to the letter, paying special attention to just when to connect the USB cable and switch on, as well as shutting down every last bit of running software before starting.
There are four buttons on the front of the unit and their function is clearly marked - scan to pdf, scan to email, copy and start. On the top there is a small panel that is the 35mm film loader, and this opens in a controlled and very pleasing way. It's worth noting that in order to use...

York in Devon.
Review of York (Shop) by
ray52
Advantages: Cheaper photos, Good quality.
Disadvantages: None
...I find this is the only way to have photos developed.
This is a cheaper way of having your holiday snaps, wedding photos, and family photos processed in good quality, than taking them to Boots or other high street shops. They are usually returned within 7 days. You can pay for express service. This is at a cost of 45p (35mm only).
If you want your photos the standard size this will cost you £1.55 for up to 27 exposures, or £2.30 for up to 40 exposures.
Other sizes and prices are as follows:
27 exposures (30% bigger £1.95)
40 " ( " " £2.75)
APS (3 formats) 27 exposures £3.99
APS (" " ) 40 " £4.99
The photos usually come with a gloss finish, but if you want matt then you will have to add 50p per film (35mm only). This is the type of finish I prefer as finger marks do not usually show.
You can have 1 extra set of prints done...

Nikon Super Coolscan 9000 ED a design success.
Review of Nikon Super Coolscan 9000 ED by
petermock
Advantages: high quality scans, large files, robust and intelligently designed.
Disadvantages: None.
...The Nikon Super Coolscan 9000 ED is a brilliantly designed multi- format film scanner aimed at professionals but I would seriously recommend it for anyone passionate about photography. It is a joy to use.
It scans 35mm, Medium format 120/220, 6x6, 6x7, 6x9 (cm) and 16mm size films. Excellent results with black and white, colour negative and slide film in all the available above formats.
The price for the Nikon Super Coolscan 9000 ED is around £1800 to £2200. Compared to the Imacon range of Flextight scanners which can be anything around £5000 to £12000 the Nikon Coolscan 9000 ED price is instantly more attractive but what about quality?
The Nikon Coolscan produces images that are certainly good enough for professional, commercial and archival uses and fine art exhibiting purposes.
If you use Photoshop and have a good or professional...

Which of the so called benefits do you really need
Review of APS - APS by
Phil_P
Advantages: Small, light cameras
Disadvantages: Just too expensive
...When my little Konica A4 35mm compact camera finally gave up the ghost I found myself in the market for a replacement. The good point about the Konica had been its small size so that was to be one of the key features of any replacement camera. APS was quite new at that time and offered a number of interesting features so I plumped for a Canon Ixus. It was the smallest camera I could find and the fact that it was also about the cutest around was a bonus.
So why was it a mistake?
The camera itself wasn't a mistake. My SLRs are Canons and I love the build quality, the quality of the optics and the reliability. No, the mistake was | | |
