Death by 35mm film
Advantages: Great value
Disadvantages: A bit slow
...lab. You know the one, they shove lurid green plastic envelopes through your letterbox every now and then.
WILL THEY PROCESS ANY FILM?
Currently Truprint accept colour 35mm, APS, Advantix and disposable cameras. They are also setting up a service for digital images online, but this isn't fully functional yet. Or in fact functional at all, so it could be a while before this is possible :(
IS IT EXPENSIVE?
No no no no NO! It's as cheap as... a very, very cheap thing. This is where the beauty of Truprint lies: for a standard 35mm/27 exp film, the cost for regular 6"x4" pictures is only £2.49. Postage and packaging is 70p per film, but this is still very competitive when compared with the High Street prices. However, in addition to this, for every film you send in you receive a free 200 ASA/24 exp film, and can upgrade to a 36 exp...

35mm, APS or Digital
Advantages: Digital Encourages Creativity Through Risk Taking, after all, you can always erase it!
Disadvantages: Still got a way to go, before it sounds the death knell of celluloid
...35mm? APS? SLR? 2.3 Megapixels? 3x Zoom?
If you’re only now thinking of getting into photography, in however a small way, these are some of terms that you will see bandied around in shops like Dixons or Jessops.
Firstly, let me explode the few examples of jargon above.
35mm = Well, 35 millimetre! This refers to celluloid film where its width across its sprocket holes is 35mm. Why does it have sprocket holes? Originally, when the need for smaller cameras was identified before the 2nd World War, cinema film stock was the only format commonly available in that size, hence the holes.
APS = Advanced Photographic System. This is a newer celluloid film format, which adds several user-friendly facilities over and above those offered by the better-established films like 35mm.
SLR = Single Lens Reflex. This refers to cameras...

looking to buy a 35mm slr
Advantages: Cheaper than digital
Disadvantages: processing costs
...Now is an ideal time to purchase a 35mm SLR camera, there are several reasons for this.
The first is many people are moving over to the digital format so they are selling off their old equipment. This means that it should be available more cheaply than it would have originaly sold at.
Some shops are also selling off their old stock to make way for the digital stock. If you want to digitise your results you can still do so. This is done either by scanning the finished prints into the computer and saving it in a digital form or asking for the film to be developed and stored on a CD ROM or DVD.
Also buying a 35mm means that you can perfect the art of photography by doing all the settings yourself and learning the true art of photography.
When buying the camera you have choices to make such as do you want a manual or auto...

A true replacement for professional 35mm cameras
Advantages: Full control over all aspects of photography, True SLR, interchangable lenses, metal body
Disadvantages: Expensive! This camera is for pro and semi-pro photographers, not the amateurs!
...!
Physically, the camera has a nice balance, and is exactly the size and weight you'd expect of it 35mm forbears - but with the advantage of being able to take a great many shots with a reasonably-sized Compact Flash card - at full resolution and normal compression, you get around 300 images on a 512MB card.
You do have the option of taking both uncompressed TIF images (~30 per 512MB), and even raw sensor data for importation into Photoshop allowing you even more control over the processing of the image.
One thing that troubles many photographers about digital cameras is the battery life - fear not!
The 1400mAh Lithium-Ion battery supplied with the D100 is perfectly capable of taking over 400 shots using the built-in flash (or Speedlight as Nikon call it), and well over a thousand if the flash is not used (using a CompactFlash card for storage...

Ken's Challenge - APS Film in a nutshell
Advantages: foolproof loading, mid-roll changing
Disadvantages: more expensive to develop/process
...APS Film offers more versatility over traditional 35mm film, with 3 different picture formats, coming usually in 25 or 40 exposure reels. Developing and processing, particularly in panoramic mode can be more expensive than 35mm film. Index prints are standard, and negatives remain in the cartridge. They are foolproof to load, and can often be changed mid-roll. If travelling abroad, then stock up as availability in remote locations is not that good. APS Disposable cameras are now available too, offering good results, perhaps worth trying before buying an APS camera....

Just like my old 35mm
Advantages: Easy to use. Not expensive
Disadvantages: none
...The first thing that I noticed about this little Kodak camera is how much like an ordinary 35mm camera it is.
Just like your old point and click cameras in size, it is really simple to use, with the same point and click button on top that you would be used to with an ordinary camera.
About the only way you can really tell it apart is by the lens, which instead of being in the middle, is shifted way over to the right hand side. This can be a bit awkward as it’s quite easy to get finger marks all over it, so it’s better if you keep the lens cap on when its not in use.
Obviously, the biggest benefit of any digital camera is that you don’t always have to be buying film for it, and it allows you to take many more pictures.
With my old Canon 35mm I could only get 36 snapshots from a roll of film, but now I have...

35mm just went out of fashion
Advantages: Small, great optics, easy to use
Disadvantages: case too soft
...This was my first digital camera and I reckon anyone who tries this technology will never go back to 35 mm.
The camera is expensive. Mine cost me £500 with a 256MB memory card (good for 100-500 images). You can take as many photos as you want. You can edit the bad ones, delete the awful ones and print the ones you want or just burn them to DVD and view them on your TV.
I sold my 3 35mm cameras and a bucket of film on eBay.
The SD card has never let me down. I've never lost any photos but I do carry the original 16MB as a spare. By the way, a 16MB factory supplied card on a £500 camera is sooo mean.
Lens cover is a must and is builtin. When it powers off though it doesn't close.
You cannot add lens so this is an amateur machine although it has a full rnage of exposure, white balance and speed controls as well as digital...

Fuji Panoramic Disposable camera Quality at a cost
Advantages: small, easy to use, panoramic pics, excellent photos
Disadvantages: Only 15 exposures, not that cheap, no flash
...good quality; with nice colours and no shadows. The images were clear and sharp with fine grain. The photographs are of a panormaic size (4" x 10" format)
The camera is also very easy to use, as with most single use cameras, its a matter of click the button on the top then wind it on and its really that simple. processing was also easy, it uses a usual 35mm film, as with most SLR or single use cameras, which means you can nip it into any processing centre without problems or extra costs. Developing and processing however are not included in the price of the camera. Many single use cameras offer free processing however this is not the case for this camera. Thus its perhaps worth considering that on top of the £8.50 you've paid for the camera, you could have another £3 or £4 to pay for processing, the fact that panoramic films also...

Good alternative to a kit zoom lens
Advantages: Good for shooting in low light, compact, discreet, low weight
Disadvantages: None really
...This lens is an ideal "normal" lens for a digital SLR camera.
It gives a similar field of view to using a standard 50mm lens with a film SLR camera.
The reason for this is that most DSLR cameras have a sensor that is smaller than the standard 24x36mm area on each exposure in a roll of film. (24x36mm is often referred to as "full-frame")
All Nikon DSLRs (apart from the new D3) use 16x24mm sensors known as "DX" size. These dimensions are 1/1.5 the size of full-frame, so the term "1.5X Crop Factor" is often used.
If you take this 35mm lens and multiply by the 1.5X crop factor then it gives 52.5mm, which is the equivalent field of view this lens gives compared with using film.
DSLRs are often sold with a basic "kit lens", for example an 18-55mm zoom lens.
While being able to zoom is often useful, the downside is that...
