The Network Party
Review of 3Com EtherLink 10 PCI Combo by
real_rob_writer
Advantages: Fun
Disadvantages: None
..., although there are various ways that you can go about things.
If you just want to hook up two PC's for a bit of head to head gaming you can use a standard parallel or serial cable which fits between any two PC's. You can then run a program that comes with Windows called direct cable connection and you should be able to access each others PC's and more importantly, play games. In reality I have always found direct cable connection a little hit and miss, working when and if it feels like it.
For more than one PC you are going to need some extra kit for your PC, what are known as Network cards (or NICs - Network Interface Cards). There are all sorts of different cards, cables and ways to network depending on what, and how fast you want to do things. The most common types of card are 10/100 combo cards, which offer a circular (BNC) slot for 10...

I stick it in !!!
Review of 3Com Fast EtherLink XL by
6Hades6
Advantages: good, fast, cheap
Disadvantages: Nothing
...as lasting, after the installation and the installation what both rather quickly and simply went, to this day, had never to open my computer because of this card I it works faultlessly to this day.
I use it for my small network, what consists of three computers or if friends come to the gamble to me.
Up till now I didn't as said have any problems with it yet and I think I am also absolutely satisfied with their speed who already needs a 1000 Mbit card at home, then?
So nothing bad gives to report, I have used it for my DSL once a while, too and it worked and harmonized faultlessly also there, I really only can recommend it if spare one extra card, one of the good manufacturer 3 COM then.

Very functional Network Card
Review of 3Com 905B Combo 10/100MBit PCI by
andycharger
Advantages: Fast and reliable and loads of network choice..
Disadvantages: Expensive
...think it is so.
The 3Com 905B Combo 10/100MBit PCI
Overview.
This card is of excellent design. It is produced by 3com who are one of the market innovators in Network Technology. You can gaurantee it is going to be very high quality and last you for as long as your computer will. With its vast array of network port choices, you can be assured it will be adaptable to almost any environment.
Compatibility.
This card is PCI slot fitting. This means that it fits into the WHITE expansion slots inside your machine. Almost all PC's built in the last 5 or 6 years will have PCI slots. Best way to make sure is to open up your PC case. If you are unsure about this, consult a local shop.
The slot will be towards the rear of the machine and on the motherboard.
Installation.
Simply open up your computer (with the power off) and find a vacant slot...

Handy for the modern network
Review of 3Com 3C905B-TX by
andycharger
Advantages: Cheap, effective and functional
Disadvantages: single port is restrictive
...This is my 2nd review of the 3com Network cards today. This time I intend to write about one of the less expensive cards that offer great performance on modern networks.
I have already explained about networks on my previous opinion so for those of you who have not read it and want to know more about networks, please read my other opinion too. It will help with the terminology here.
The 3Com 905B NM 10/100MBit PCI
Overview.
This truly is a great Network Card. Produced by 3com, who are one of the market innovators in Network Technology, it provides the user with a solitary connection to a network via a modern RJ-45 type connector. the NM in its title stands for Non-Management. This will be explained.
Compatibility.
This card, like the other card I have written about, is also PCI slot fitting. This means that it fits...

3C905B-COMBO
Review of 3Com 905B Combo 10/100MBit PCI by
space_cadet
Advantages: Reduce TCO
Disadvantages: not really for home use
...3Com's excellent network interface card (NIC)certainly cuts the mustart especially for the desktop. It gives 10Mbps over CAT 3, 4 or 5, and 100Mbps for CAT 5. It has the usual RJ45 and BNC connections for ethernet networks. Installation is a dream especially on plug and play operating systems. For the network management freaks among you it has :-
1) Performance Management
2) Network Management (over switched networks)
3) Remote Wake Up (RWU)
4) Desktop Management capabilities.
Overall the card is extremely reliable and robust.
Advantages: Reduce TCO, Easy installation
Disadvantages: could be too costly for the home user...

Quake III or Unreal
Review of Quake III: Arena (PC) by
Garza007
Advantages: Good graphics
Disadvantages: Lacks something...
...Well, both Quake III and Unreal Tounrament are magnificent games, but personally I prefer Unreal, because the gameplay is far more better... why is it better? well, you may think that Quake II and Unreal are the same kind of games, and they are but Unreal just seems to have that extra thing, that extra UMPH! over Quake III...
Quake III has stunning graphics and sound, but it still lacks something, that something that Unreal has... I can't explain it properly...
But I do have to say that Unreal is better all round than Quake III... even though Unreal requires a good video card, it's still very good...
So if you're stuck in a situation between Quake III and
Unreal Tournament, then I say choose Unreal Tournament... Go on you know you want to!!!...

combo-isation
Review of Philips JackRabbit 3 by
Gaz_23
Advantages: a REMOTE CONTROL!!!!!
Disadvantages: a bit slow when using usb 1.1
...away from the normal standard boring optical drives from other companies. They have made this so that it will work for PC and Mac, so Apple users out there aren’t going to lose out. This is what your machines going to have to be at least to have this baby;
Windows 98SE/ ME/ 2000/ XP or Mac OS X. Also your going to have to have a Pentium III 500Mhz CPU and 128 Mb RAM ,and of course a USB port, so that it can be connected to your computer. And to be nice Philips are of course giving the software needed for both Mac and PC. This means that you get Direct CD, Roxie easy CD Creator, Toast 5 (Mac) and Power DVD, for playing back movies.
Now this drive has a whole load of ports. One for the ‘power brick’, one for USB 2.0, another for headphones, another for audio out, S-Video out and CVBS Video out. Also there is a blue button on its side...

Good for multiplayer
Review of Quake III Arena (PC) by
CC2000
Advantages: Good graphics, multiplayer and bot AI
Disadvantages: Poor single player mode
...Quake III Arena is a great improvement over Quake II in many ways. The graphics a lot better, providing you have a good computer, and a 3dfx card, and the game has a new array of weapons and powerups. Like its prequel, Quake II, the game can be played on your own, with others over a network or direct link, or using a modem. Unlike Quake II, where the single player mode had objectives and a storyline, Quake III uses arenas with one or more computer controlled bots in, and you have to get up to a certain amount of frags (kills) to win. Although this can be good it leaves you a little disappointed, and completing all the levels provides no satisfaction.
Although I enjoyed this game I got bored with it after I played Unreal Tournament, which is a lot better.
Overall, Quake III is a great shoot-em-up game for multiplayer, but if you don...

Speed up your network
Review of 3Com Gigabit Server NIC Network adapter by
paranoidcookie
Advantages: Fast excellent buld and drivers
Disadvantages: Price
...Recently Ive become involved in an armature computer games event which means my computer is oft used for high peen LAN games I felt it might be worth increasing the network speed a bit by upgrading the network card.
Generic Network interface cards (NICs) seem to have taken over recently however I always have a soft spot for 3com's card the 10/100 3c905 range was the among the most stable fast range of PCI interface cards ever I thought I would try out the new breed of card.
I bought my card "new" from ebay for £10 plus delivery, generic 1000mb card can be bought for around this price new from most PC resellers.
The Package
**************
The package arrived sealed in a 3com cardboard box inside which was the NIC in a plastic wrapping the driver cdrom and a warranty manual. It also had a brief guide swing how to insert the card...

Best of the Savage 4 bunch
Review of Diamond Stealth III S540 by
CyrixDes
Advantages: nice little performer, cheap now, Diamond quality
Disadvantages: a little outdated
...The Savage 4 chipset has been pushed hard by Diamond particularly since S3 and Diamond merged, with S3 making the Savage 4 chipset it is obvious that they would stick with this. Diamond have released 2 cards with the Savage 4 chipset, the Diamond Stealth III S540 (the card i'm reviewing now) and the Diamond Stealth III S540 Xtreme. The difference being that the standard S540 was using the Savage 4 chipset and the Xtreme uses the Savage 4 Pro+ chipset which is significantly quicker. Anyway onto the review:
I upgraded my computer about 2 years ago now and went from my old 486 machine upto a Cyrix MII-300. Obviously I needed a new graphics card and ended up with a Videologic Apocalypse 5D. This did me for 6 months but then I needed something beefier and picked up a 16Mb AGP Stealth III S540 from a computer fair.
For starters my initial...
