3Com OfficeConnect Wireless 11g Access Point
Advantages: Bargain bundle with wireless card for my laptop
Disadvantages: Just an access point, no modem/hub/etc
...I use the 3Com OfficeConnect Wireless 11g Access Point in my home wireless network, and bought it as part of a bundle with a laptop wireless card - check my other reviews to see if I've got round to reviewing that too...
It used the IEEE 802.11g standard (data transfer speeds of up to 54Mbps), plus is backwards compatible with IEEE 802.11b (upto 11Mbps) so works with older equipment (such as a slightly outdated laptop from a previous employer) with no problems.
The included CD installed all the necessary drivers very quickly and also contains all the manuals in PDF format. Once the drivers were installed, the configuration wizard runs in a standard web browser. This involves configuring IP addresses, encryption settings, DHCP settings and other techy bits and bobs. This was pretty straightforward, although a basic knowledge...

3Com - Mind Blowing Wireless Range!
Advantages: Awesome Value for Money, Great Setup Utility
Disadvantages: Not the best looking object in the world!
...When you purchase an all-in-one solution for broadband in your home these days, you want something that will sit in the background, quietly providing you with fast broadband - whether wired to your desktops, wireless to your laptops or networked to a whole range of bandwidth hungry appliances. You want it to work and you want it to be reliable and of course it must be simple to set-up.
The 3Com OfficeConnect Wireless Router ticks all these requirements. I originally purchased one for a client, and I was surprised at how easy the installation was, especially since they used dreaded AOL! Many manuals for routers are usually of two distinct formats: horrendously complicated jargon-spewing bohemoths aimed at network professionals with accreditation from Cisco, or are partonising pamphlets covering the "perfect" install, which we all know...

I have a lot to say: GREAT GREAT GREAT
Advantages: Seamless networking, consistent speed, easy, EASY, install : )
Disadvantages: Plastic casing, Just like retro machines : (
...the router, and lights immediately start flashing, the clean layout and the simple labelling to all the lights explains what is happening.
After all, the router has a lot to say, it indicates, the power status, the status of; wireless activity on the network, the activity of computers connected via the Ethernet, and the status of the internet connection. The lights are simple once you have got used to the layout.
The internet obviously would not connect first time, so i turned to the instructions, there were no silly utilities to be installed via CD ROM or anything, the router can be configured through an easy interface via the web browser, you might have to do some digging to find certain things about your internet connection, but it is all there.
And before long ( 5-10) minutes, you can be enjoying, your broadband connection to its...

WG602 54 Mbps Wireless Access Point
Advantages: Good features, repeater and bridging modes
Disadvantages: Minor installation problem
...bridging types that can be enabled, point to point and multipoint. I didn't try those and to be honest, I'm not entirely sure what they are for! The Netgear unit comes with a 3 year warranty and the web site provides the usual firmware updates and FAQs should you hit any problems.
Summary
As an access point, the Netgear WG602 has much to commend it. It looks quite nice and can be stacked with similar devices in their range. It has all the usual functions you'd expect and at around £40 now (I paid £66 for mine), it is good value for money. However, should you need to extend the range of your wireless network, it really comes in to its own and provides an economic way to make a real difference to your range and quality of signal for your wireless network....

Connect to Ciao from your garden!
Advantages: You can access the internet from anywhere in the house (or garden)
Disadvantages: Hard to set up.
...I have been in trouble this past couple of months. I discovered Ciao, and want to spend loads of time here. My husband wants me to spend time with him, understandably. He likes watching car programmes on the television, and I don?t. The solution we came up with was a Wireless Router for my laptop.
Having looked around, and found no product reviews on wireless routers, we took our chances on this. We searched around for a good price.
We placed an order from ebuyer for a 3COM Office Connect ADSL Wireless 11g Firewall Router, with a 3COM Office Connect Wireless 11g PC Card. The cards on their own cost around £34 if you search the net.
If ever they add the correct product to the category, I will write one on the Router itself, but for now, I get to tell you about my experience with the card.
This review assumes that you already...

Great Mid-Range router
Advantages: Good price, reliable, lifetime warranty, easy setup
Disadvantages: No way to add an external antenna
...and bobs. And that's pretty much it, you're ready to go!
The OfficeConnect has all the usual features one would expect from a mid-range wifi ADSL router - Quality of Service (for using Skype etc), Good built-in firewall for example.
My favorite features of the OfficeConnect are: The ability to switch the wireless on/off seperately, the lifetime warranty, wall mountable bracket, very easy instalation/setup and it's good performance record.
The only two negatives for me are: There's no way to add your own antenna to the router and the fact that you can't limit the traffic for WiFi or local use.
Overall the 3Com officeconnect is a great mid-range adsl router with easy setup and a great performance record....

Netgear WGR614 54 Mbps Wireless Router
Advantages: Easy setup, great customer support, good price
Disadvantages: None
...In short: Excellent router, easy to set up and good support from Netgear.
I bought this modem router from Ebay to set up a wireless home network. Depsite paying AOL money each month and seeing new customers getting this router for free we were told that we would still have to purchase it separately. As this was one of the AOL compatible routers I plumped for it due to Netgear's good name.
The router was installed easyily and using AOL software from their site my main computer was up and running using an ethernet cable. We did have a couple of problems setting up our two laptops to work wirelessly but one short call to Netgear and that was all sorted out. If you don't have laptops with built in wireless capability I would recommend getting the compatible wireless adapters from Netgear, these also are installed very easily. Even...

Wireless Usb 54Mbps G Compact
Advantages: Plug and play, easy to use.
Disadvantages: It is external, meaning not inside your computer.
...This product is very reliable great for people on the go, or even at home. Good office use and offers speeds that will satisfy anyones needs. There is only one inconvenience though, the fact that it is external. Since it is external there is always a better chance of it breaking, or being lost. Linksys is the leading networking brand and is very reliable, and there when you need it. The software provided gives you an easy to use network monitor which gives you the option to connect to what network you wish, save the network as a profile, and show the best link connection/speed. It has support for USB 2.0 and also USB 1.1 so it will work great on older computers. It is compatible with Windows 98SE, 2000, ME, XP, and also Vista. It has two wireless network modes 802.11g and 802.11b and is also compatible with 128-bit encryption....

The web, wirelessly.
Advantages: All-in-one package, ease of use, advanced features.
Disadvantages: Price
...are running your phone line/broadband connection through a cable company such as NTL, you'll need slightly different equipment.
Wireless is also pretty easy to explain, cos it means you don't have to use wires. It's as simple as that.
As an aside: Wireless network technology may also be described as 802.11a, 802.11b or 802.11g, and you shouldn't panic if you see these complicated looking numbers. The 'g' suffix at the end of the numbers indicates that the speed of the connection is 54 Mbps, transmitted at 2.4GHz whereas the 802.11 indicates the protocol (or interface) used to transmit and receive the data. 'a' and 'b' suffixes mean that the same interface is used, but at different speeds and frequencies. It's more common to see 802.11b and 802.11g these days. 802.11b and 802.11g are compatible as they transmit information at the same...

Belkin 802.11g Wireless Card
Advantages: No more cables
Disadvantages: non
...I got three of these to set up a wireless network for my home computers and link them through a Belkin wireless router. You can obviously use these cards on one machine via a router, and you have no cables running all over the place.
The installation is very easy, just fit the card in any spare PCI card on your PC. If you use XP operating system, the card is found on restarting your PC and asks for the install CD, the software is installed in seconds.
You can use the network wizzard in XP to set up your network, its an easy and intuative setup.
Its not only the internet you can share, you can share files via a "shared files" folder that is created during setup. This is handy if one of your machines has large hard drives, where bulky files can be stored and accessed by others on your network. You can also share a printer...
