Review of Channel 4 - Location, Location, Location

C and B channel 4!!!

Advantages: Better coverage and highlights are better
Disadvantages: Cricket does swap for horse racing

...With the help of Npower and the ECB, Channel 4 has provided the whole of Britain with live coverage which the fans find exciting and thrilling to watch. Channel 4 has brought us many great matches during this last decade, the most memorable being the Ashes win this year with brilliant performances from both teams. If I am looking to watch cricket, Channel 4 is the first place I go. Another factor that has effected Channel 4 a lot is the amazing and exiting commentry from some of the greats. CHANNEL 4 NEWS.

Advantages: A little later in the day. Free.
Disadvantages: Too long and not that local.

...Channel 4 terrestrial TV news. On 6 night a week Sunday to Friday. Monday to Friday the programme runs from 19.00 - 20.00 (it finishes a little earlier on Friday at 19.40) on Sundays from 19.30 - 20.00 hrs. The most predominant presenter is the by now famous Jon Snow (a regular). There is often 1 other presenter. The presenters adopt a variety of positions in the studio, sometimes standing sometimes seated behind a desk - Is there any reason for these differing poses? The programme starts with an outline of the major news items to be covered during the programme. Oddly the background to the presenters seem full of colour and object of a rather ill defined nature. Advantages: OK selection
Disadvantages: behind other channels

...It seems that Channel 4 has decided that its target audience is lower in age than before. A lot of the prime time space is now filled with programmes that appeal to teens and young adults. Take for example T4. Johnny Bravo, Blunt, Hollyoaks, Making the Band, Futurama, Italian football and WWF Wrestling, all target the younger ages. This is probably because Channel 4 recognises that we are still in bed gone midday, and that we are likely to just lie there and watch TV! True! Channel 4 still has Brookside for slightly more mature members of the population (well, I think so!) and Countdown and 15 to 1, but from 17:30, we are the target, and I love it! ...Channel 4 has to be one of the world's worst TV networks. The companies main goals seem to be get rid of any good shows they have and waste money on a number of failed morning shows such as RI:SE! ...That's the thing about youth today, there is massive segregation when it comes to friendship groups and the music that they listen to, so what is best for these music channels to show so that they don't lose out on audiance ratings due to alienating one certain type of viewer? Well show everything seems to be the idea done by most channels, including well known ones such as MTV and The Box. B4 runs along the same lines as both those channels, but does 357 (an easy diagonal to press in for us Sky Digital customers) have the same recipe for success? B4's premise is simple, it is to show music before any other channel, and we all know that one of the key things about being cool when you're younger is knowing the new music before anyone else. The problem I see with this is that most music on the channel comes over from America anyway...

channel 4's - 1940s House

Advantages: a great series
Disadvantages: none

...The 1940s house - broadcastes by channel 4. The Hymers - Lyn and Michael actually live in a Victorian terraced house in Yorkshire - England. With their daughter Kirstie and her two sons Ben and Tom who live nearby. Their lounge/sitting room is Victorian Styled, their dining room in 1940s, the kitchen is a 50s diner and their bathroom is Edwardian. The family all come from a small market town of Otley, which is near Leeds. The family - (Lyn, Kirstie, Thomas and Ben) thought that Micheal had a very clear view of what the 1940s period was like, so they then decided that they would like to live in "The 1940s House". Channel 4

Advantages: Decent comedy shows
Disadvantages: None really

...Channel 4 is surprisingly good. It was, for a long time, considered something of a joke but it is probably one of the better channels around. A lot of the days schedule is...uninteresting, but at certain times of the day they do show some top quality programmes. The 6-7 slot is also quite often filled with something worth watching. Hollyoaks is a good example of something that is worth watching. Friday evenings are also good for comedy with Frasier, Friends, South Park, etc being shown. OK these programmes are not to everyone's taste and the decent shows may be spread a bit thinly at times, but at least they do consistently show decent things at the same times. They don't constantly reschedule programmes to try to win more viewers and end up losing existing ones (take note ITV, BBC, Sky One, etc) and this means that you always know...

Channel 4 all

Advantages: Great programming, high entertainment, great presenters.
Disadvantages: None that I can think off!

...I recently learnt that Channel 4 was controlled by the government and this came as somewhat of a surprise to me. In my opinion Channel 4 is overlooked too often - ratings wars are always between BBC1 and ITV. But this is not how it should be because Channel 4 is an excellent channel. Channel 4 is probably most famous at the moment for Big Brother (and its celebrity spin-off in conjunction with Children in Need). Big Brother was a revolutionary programme for the U.K - never before had we seen such a reality programme. While many did not like it, it gripped the nation for over two months.
