Apple MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo 2.5 GHz - 17" TFT
Advantages: nice screen, good battery life, fast specs
Disadvantages: large size (price?)
...Apple mac-books, where to start...
ok, so to start,
it is an apple, that means you get a solid quality product and on the whole very good customer are.
this particualar apple is deffinatly more suited to being a media center than other laptops. At first glance you realise that it is a fairly large laptop, this allows for a big screen, which being an apple ffers clear vivid displays, unfortunatly the big screen increases the overal size and also uses more battery, however, the 4.5 hour yattery is still very good for an entertainment laptop.
The laptops technical specs include a very fast 2.5 ghz dual core proccesor which is very fast, the dual core allows it to tackle multiple tasks quicly as well as increasing the overall speed of the laptop.
The price is quite steep however, but i believe, if given the money, it is...

AMD's Phenom II 3Ghz Beast!
Advantages: Highly overclockable, will eat, chew and spit out anything! PRICE!!!!
Disadvantages: its milli seconds slower than the I7! so no disadvantages at all!!!
...On for my 7th review!!
I bought this remarkable peice of kit approximately 3 months ago, and i have to say it certainly does NOT disappoint!
With masses and masses of power it will spit out anything with grace and style and is the equivelant to using a nuclear device to knock off a door! full on over kill but done with pure style and less mushrooming and carnage!
so the basic standard is 3Ghz x4 when it comes out of the box... ok, so for many times as much you can have Pentiums I7 with more oomph and quicker! but the AMD comes into its own when you decide to overclock the already beastly device! i have read in bench tests it has peaked at 5Ghz! but definitely not recommended! i think 3.5-4Ghz is a safe bet, for standard cooling and pre-set voltages..... but that is still a whopping 14Ghz of combined power! BEASTLY is an understatement...

AMD Athlon 64 3500+ 2.2GHz
Advantages: 64-bit future proofed, speedy, excellent value for money
Disadvantages: Dual core AMD 64 CPUS are faster... but hey it would make this CPU cheaper so it's not all bad!
...meant less heat would be generated, and the closer contacts would pass information more quickly.
But that's as much in common both the CPU companies had with each other, as their other methods of manufacturing and selling their CPUs differ immensely. Intel sported a 'clock-speed sells' stance, trying to clock their CPU speeds at really high frequencies i.e. 3.2GHz, 3.4GHz. This meant that the CPU ran immensely hot, drew a lot of power and Intel discovered they couldn't clock their CPUs any higher than 3.8GHz. They hit a bottleneck. The heatsink and fan provided by Intel for their CPU in their retail boxes only just manages to keep the CPU stable at just slightly above 70 degrees Celsius. A lot of people opted to use water-cooling if they wanted an Intel CPU.
AMD on the other hand chose a different path and had their CPUs run at lower...

Dell 5150 3.06Ghz (P4 HT), 80Gb/512Mb DVD+R
Advantages: Speed, big HD, High res screen
Disadvantages: fan positioning, heat, heavy PSU
...I was after a desktop replacement that offered a really high res screen (1600x1200), big hard drive and a fast CPU. After much looking around, it seemed like the Dell 5150 fitted the bill. The price was too high though so I kept an eye on Dell's refrurbished/cancelled orders site, Dell Outlet until one turned up at about 35% off the list price. Deal done. I got a free wireless keyboard/mouse, free USB memory stick and reduced delivery in to the bargain.
The machine is a couple of years old now so some of the spec isn't exactly leading edge but at the time it was state of the art:
3.06Ghz HT CPU. The HT = Hyperthreading which means the CPU can do more than one thing at a time and appears to Windows as 2 seperate CPUs. The modern version, done properly as 2 real CPUs in a chip is the Core Duo range from Intel or the X2's from AMD...

2.8ghz Pentium 4 - Oldie but Goodie
Advantages: Cheap, Good Performace
Disadvantages: Not HT, L2 Cache could be bigger, Easy to install if you know how.
...the processor relatively quick and very capable for everyday tasks and even gaming (when paired with a good graphics card).
It is available in the older Northwood core or the newer Prescott core, I chose Northwood because prescott run hotter, but the prescott does have 1mb of L2 cache, comapred to the Northwoods L2 cache of 512kb. This makes the prescott slightly better for video encoding.
---------Performance----------
I'll start with the most important aspect of any processor, performance. I bought this processor as an upgrade to a 1.7ghz 400FSB pentium 4, and it's one hell of an improvement. I can say through general office tasks like web browsing, word processing etc, it is no worse than a Hyper Threaded (HT) 3.0ghz Pentium 4
Its by no means top dog anymore, there are better and faster processors out there, working on new technology...

P4 3.2GHz CPU with 512Kb Cache! Expensive but fast
Advantages: FAST, Retail box comes with fan, sticker, manual
Disadvantages: More expensive than Celerons, AMDs, etc
...Okay, so I bought myself a motherboard (see Asus P4C800-E Deluxe review) to build a computer but it?s not a computer without the rest of the components. One of these other components I needed was the CPU. ?HUH? A C-P-What?!!!??.Well since you ask, I will tell you. CPU is an acronym for Central Processing Unit (aka: Processor). This is the computer?s brain and it plays an important role in a computer. This is where all the information ?processed? and where all the calculations are done. Generally, the faster the CPU, the better the performance but there are other factors to take into consideration. It usually looks like a square metal thing, with gold pins underneath but Pentium 3?s have a single connector that slots into a slot rather than use pins.
The CPU I am reviewing is Intel?s Pentium 4 (P4 for short) 3.2GHz CPU. This one has...

My Dream Machine CPU - P4 Prescott 2.8GHz
Advantages: Very Fast, Latest technology
Disadvantages: Not 64 bit like AMD, heat problems
...In the second on my series of computer component reviews, I would like to offer you the Pentium 4 Prescott 2.8Ghz.
---------------------
Prescott?
---------------------
Intel have produced 5 versions of their pentium 4 range. The first was the Willamite which would only accept RD RAM and was very short lived. The next was the Northwood, which is the one which sits in most computers nowadays.
Then there's the ridiculously expensive Extreme Edition, for really silly gamers who want huge performance from their machines. And of course the P4-M for laptops. This processor is designed to give max performance on the move.
But there's a new version on the block called Prescott. This, I decided, was the chip for me.
Firstly, it's got the 800MHz front serial bus found in the later versions of the Northwood. The FSB speed makes...

Intel Core 2 Duo E6750/ 2.66ghz
Advantages: Fast clock speed / Good amount of lvl2 cache
Disadvantages: Could balance out workload onto both cores a bit more
...This processor is a fairly mid-high spec for core 2 duo range it delivers some great performance for a good price.
This cpu can handle a lot of multi-tasking along with playing powerful games. Usually i can run a defragmentation and notice it hardly at all i can play games and play music with no problem it just makes desktop computing so easy.
As you may know this is an Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 / 2.66ghz cpu, It has 2 cores on the one chip. it runs with 64-bit architecture which then opens up a whole new world of 64-bit operating systems for tommorows technolodgy...this along with the fact it has 4mb lvl2 cache makes superfast repsonse rates to programs and files i have also noticed that their are not so many "cache misses" to which i expected so this pleases me the most :D
The only downside is that i have noticed that core...

Celeron D 2.53ghz
Advantages: Cheap, works well, does 64 bit proccesing.
Disadvantages: No frills, slow performance
...The celeron D is a pretty hard call. The rating it deserves depends on what you want it for. It does its job as a budget processor very well but if you are looking for a good performer this is no way the one for you. Lets look at the specs.
procesor number- 326
archutecture- 90nm
cache- 256kb L2
clock speed- 2.53ghz
front side bus- 533mghz
intel emt 64 bit- yes
excecute disable bit- yes
These arn't very large even if you just comapre them to a pentium 4. For its price however they are understandable.
Performance- is reansonable with basic applications word ect and runs very well. Video encoding is slow in comparison to more expensive procesors. It does run the latest games but as you move up to high resolutions and turn up to high quality framerates plummet and games start to go slightly joggoly at time...
