Between DLT and SDLT - 80 - 160GB Backup
Review of Quantum DLT VS160 80 GB 160 GB by
davidbarnes82
Advantages: Fast, reliable, Good Price
Disadvantages: No SCSI cable included, Not Great instructions
...I bought this for our office server which before-hand was running a DDS5 tape drive. I have to say the DDS5 backup system we had was excellent and never caused me any problems.
We got to a point where we needed two tapes to do a backup, and considering we keep backups for up to a month, thats a hell of a lot more tapes we would have to buy.
After a lot of research and learning about DLT and SDLT, we discovered the V160. DLT allows backups to 40GB (80GB Compressed) and SDLT is alot more (i forget the figures). DLT would not have been enough and SDLT is a hell of a lot more expensive.
Quantums V160 is right in the middle of the two and each tape can store up to 160GB data if compressed. We managed to get the drive for around £700 and then bought a number of tapes. It was delivered direct from Quantum within a week.
The one problem I...

This is how backups SHOULD be
Review of Quantum DLT 8000 40 GB 80 GB by
Kevin_Pritchard
Advantages: Fast, reliable, and the prices are coming down
Disadvantages: Tape load time is still slow... typical DLT, though
...Enterprise backups are important... as we all know. I've long trusted DLT technology and the DLT-8000 doesn't disappoint. As long as you know how to get the most from a tape drive, and a SCSI subsystem in general, you won't have any problems, but you will have greatly shortened backups.
I've obtained nearly 350MB/minute with this drive. On an 100GB server, that puts the backup window at less than 5 hours!
There are two keys to getting the most out of these drives. First, ensure that your tape drive firmware is updated. There were at least 2 or 3 different versions that have been improved upon since these drives first came out. The update is really as simple as making the tape with a free utility, pushing a couple of buttons on the drive and inserting the update tape.
Second, make sure your SCSI controller is able to handle the speed...

The Ultrium-ate Review
Review of Fujifilm LTO Ultrium 200 GB by
Calldean
Advantages: Fast
Disadvantages: Cost
...of DDS (Four flavours) which is a small 4mm tape, 8MM and DLT which looks very like a fat LTO tape (There are a few others but these were the main players).
While the above are still in use this is mainly due to the high cost of LTO.
If LTO is so expensive then why bother with it? Because it does all of the above very, very well. According to datasheets each tape SHOULD last up-to 250,000 hours before failing (MTBF, Meantime Between Failures) which is the same as DLT IV (Nearest rival) but the head life is double the DLT at 60,000 hours. This means, in theory, your tape should last twice as long.
An LTO tape can be written to at rates of 20-30MB per Second. This is very quick meaning that large amounts of data (I.E. Up-to 200GB) can be backed up very quickly (DLT Manages 6MB per Second).
Size:
*****
An LTO tape is 4.1 x 4.0 x 0.8 in. (105...

Back me right up!
Review of HP StorageWorks DLT VS 80 40 GB 80 GB by
andycharger
Advantages: Reliable, efficient data storage. Good compatibility
Disadvantages: Noisy, capacity not the greatest, speed.
...As most of you may be aware, computer data is very important to most of us in out jobs today. However, what happens if that data is suddenly lost or destroyed? Well, I can tell you, we would be in a right mess!
Therfore the best method to protect yourself is to back up your computer data regularly! This is ok on your home computer as a lot of people back up their important files to memory stick, DVD or CD.
But what happens in the office where there are lots of shared files and data?
enter the data tape drive. Yes your servers at work are probably backed up onto tapes. These are not too dissimilar to your Audio tapes of a few years back. They are magnetic tapes that store large amount sof computer data on them via a tape drive.
Im going to tell you all about my reliable workhorses I have here at work. The HP DLT VS80 tape drives...

Super... NovaBackup
Review of Nova Backup by
MikeWhalley
Advantages: Cheap, easy to install and use, lots of software
Disadvantages: may not have all the features of some of the bigger apps
...BACKUP - The word that everyone in the IT community hates. Whether it be because you 'really should be looking into getting' a backup system, or are cussing because you *haven't* got a backup system, and it's too late!
Now I'm hoping that the reason you're reading this is not because of the latter, but rather because you're worried because you haven't got any backup system in place and don't want to loose any work.
This opinion is based on my experiences of installing and using NovaBack+ at work. The version of NovaBack+ we use is 6.60 and is installed on a PIII 600 machine with 128mb of RAM and Windows 95. The backup drive was an HP SureStore DLT80. Although it should work with a lot lower spec.
