...Travels with my 400D I’ve been putting off writing this review for months and months. I’ve been waiting until I know just about as much about the camera as I possibly can, but I’ve come to the conclusion that this will never happen, so I’m just going to do it. It may also have to do with the fact that term ended on Tuesday, I have a massive amount of revision to do, and I’m procrastinating. It’s an unanswerable question. **This is a very long review as I’m going to assume that anyone reading this knows absolutely nothing about photography, so apologies if you do and I come across as patronising. Also, as I write this, I find it’s turning into as much of a digital camera tutorial as well as a review of the 400D itself. This is the only way I can find to review the camera properly...

It's relatively compact; lightweight; comes with an adequate lens; has programmed settings for novices - like portrait and landscape modes; but also offers manual control of apertures, shutter speeds, white balance, ISO? so that the more experienced photographers can have fun and be a little more creative. One item to note if you are upgrading from a digital compact is that you have to use the viewfinder. The screen on the back of the camera only shows exposure information, and allows you to view photographs you have already taken. It does not let you view the scene you are about to photograph. In my opinion this is a good thing because it forces you to hold the camera properly - up against your face where it can be held steadily, instead of at arms...

Canon EOS 400D - Great Value for money Digital SLR

Disadvantages: Has been superceded

...Having had a Canon EOS 350D, when the 400D was launched I was so confident of the brand that it was a forgone conclusion that I would buy one. The build quality is the first positive point. It is such a solid camera, not that you would bash it on purpose, but it'll certainly take a few knocks without any problems. The 18-55mm kit lens that I got with mine is also pretty good. This does feel a little cheaply made in comparison to the camera, but it does the job and has good optics. The screen on the back of the unit gives you all the information needed. Once a picture is taken it also gives you a preview. There is no live view, like point-and-shoot compacts and the latest digital SLR's. This means that framing your photos is done through the VERY clear optical viewfinder. The results are just stunning. The EOS 400D will beat any compact...

Canon EOS400D a fantastic entry level DSLR

Advantages: 10.2 mega pixels, good price, loads of settings, user friendly manual, auto setting
Disadvantages: None that I have come across yet

...I had been looking to upgrade from my trusty compact camera for some time, and after reading numerous reviews on entry level SLRS, I opted for the canon EOS400D and what a good choice it was. It has everything that you could want for you first SLR, and unless you are a top end professional photographer, this camera will pretty much suit anyone. I find it easy to use, and comes with a user friendly guide. There are several pre set modes and an auto mode as well as the programme and manual mode for when you get more experience and want to enjoy the flexiblilty of altering shutter speeds and aperture size. It can produce up to 10.2 mega pixels which is more than adequate, and for an entry level SLR, this is a lot higher than others I considered. ...I bought the 400D shortly after it was launched as my first DLSR. I had no idea how to work a DSLR and found the instruction manual to be very informative. Once I set down and learned what all the different buttons and setting did I set about taking photos. First thing that stood out to me was the size and weight of the camera, it is very light weight and fits nicely into the shape of my hand meaning I felt more comfortable holding it. The camera comes with a single battery which I thought was not going to be enough but is surprisingly good. I use my camera about 4 days a week for hours at a time and only have to charge it one every two weeks or so. The camera sits at 10.1 mega pixels and can fit most of the Canon lenses. The" Canon EOS400D" is a pretty black box, lightweight of about 500grams ,compact and seems to be robust, with an 1.8/55 lens.
