...You already know what a stratocaster is so I won't waste your time with the usual boring drivel. This is a fairly faithful replica of a 1950s strat but it is not an artificially aged, full-blown relic. The most important thing you need to know about the Classic '50s strat is the neck. The "soft V" neck is completely different from modern slim, fast necks. It's probably more suited to rock and blues than any heavy metal pyrotechnics. It does take a wee bit of getting used to. First impressions are that this is a "boat" neck, it feels huge under your hands. Your first instinct may be to immediately return it, but this is the classic neck profile that legends like Eric Clapton insist on. So try playing it for a few minutes. 50s Road Hauling

Advantages: Interesting look back on road haulage in the 1950s
Disadvantages: Not really any

...Whilst wandering around the shops of Shrewsbury, we decided to look at the Scope charity shop. I noticed that they had started selling a range of new DVDs produced by a company called Delta, of Orpington in Kent. (you can contact them at 222 Cray Avenue, Orpington, Kent, BR5 3PZ or via www.deltamusic.co.uk) Delta are marketing the films produced by the British Transport film unit. The first one I bought (I'll be going back for more!) is called 50s Road Hauling. The first film on the DVD is called Dodging the Column and was produced on 1952. (You'll note that the person who thought up the title has the same irksome habit of producing appalling punning headlines as I do. Sorry. But we just can't help it. Apparently for a time the road haulage industry was privatised, hence the British Transport Film unit and the use of the Lion...

50's crazy

Advantages: music, fashion the whole set up!
Disadvantages: I was never there sob sob

...Ok, so I may only be 23 and not even thought about in the 50's but, as the title says; I'M 50'S CRAZY!! If anyone is to blame for this it will be the old rocker otherwise known as dad, his love of the music has grown on me with devestating consequences! Ok, so a top ten? this will be tough as their are many, many great things but here goes..... The greatest of all has to be the music, no other decade has even got close. From doo wop to rockabilly there was something for everyone and this was the time that the greats like Elvis, Bill haley, Buddy holly and Eddie cochran first shot onto the scene. Review of Ten things that remind me of the 50s

50's Classic Mexican Stratocaster

Advantages: Classic sounds and styling
Disadvantages: colours not to everyones tastes

...My guitar is a pale blue (termed Daphne Blue by Fender) apparently all the 50's strats were painted the same cellulose colours as the cars of the period, except of course the 'Buddy Holly' variant which is natural wood. The body is I believe alder and the neck is maple with a rather golden coating which will in time become rather faded and worn giving the guitar a real vintage look. The first thing on strumming the un- amplified guitar is the kind of springy crisp tone. Plugged in the guitar produces all the classic strat tones, from Hendrix to Clapton to Knoppfler to Blackmore and a million other guitarists in between. Being modelled on an original 50's means the neck has a more rounded fretboard this gives a slightly higher action giving open chords a louder definition. Buddy Holly anyone? 50's Classic a best buy

Advantages: Classic, look style and sound of 50's Strats. Solid construction.
Disadvantages: Single ply pickguard a bit flimsy and does not sit flush.

...I purchased mine from Guitar Center for $600 even including the Gig bag. It is available in Daphne Blue, Olympic White, Black, Dakota Red and Surf Green. 1 pc Maple neck and fret board 7.25" radius with 21 vintage style frets. Vintage style syncronized tremelo Bridge, Vintage Fender Ping style tuners, 3 single coil Strat pickups with staggered Alnico Magnetic Poles. Single ply pickguard (what was used on the origional Strats) and aged plastic knobs and pickup covers. Mine is in Surf Green and was made in Ensenada mexico in 2002. Being a Made in Mexico after 2000 it's body is (as per the Fender catalogue) Alder, the finish is near flawless, and as I bought the display model, the few finish (VERY VERY Tiny) flaws may have been from store handling. The neck fits very tight to the body (a problem with some older MIM 50's classics...

Alien invasion and bondage 50's style!

Advantages: Cleverly filmed and well acted
Disadvantages: Low budget forced changes to the original story

...a fine example of 50's sci-fi and is still very watchable. THE PLOT The scientist and US air force personnel working at a remote Arctic base find the remains of an aircraft that has crashed nearby. On investigation it is found that the craft is not an ordinary plane but in fact a 'flying saucer' certainly not of human construction. Since the craft is wedged underneath the ice they decide to free it by using Thermite explosives. Unfortunately the explosives destroy the craft however a body is found frozen in the ice nearby. The body is taken still frozen in a block of ice back to the station where they attempt to contact the military authorities in Alaska to see how they should proceed. Of course the body doesn't remain frozen for long and soon the personnel in the arctic station are faced with the threat of a murderous alien creature...

Review of The Thing From Another World (DVD)

Sinead is back from the 50's.

Advantages: Some original stuff.
Disadvantages: The childrens stuff, yuk.

...Universal Mother - Sinead O'Connor Sinead released this, her 4th album in 1994, it followed 'Am I not your Girl' an album of 40's and 50's songs, which actually I thought was pretty damn good. The thinking behind this album was to get Sinead back into the charts with her previous audience, bearing in mind the previous album failed to live up to her 2nd album which reached number 1. Whilst it has sold nearly 2 million times in its original cassette and CD format since release, the album only actually reached number 19 in the UK charts (Wikipedia). This can be picked up for a fiver quite easily now. For me it is quite a strange album in that it never reaches the raw passion of the 1st album (Lion and Cobra) and is not as polished as the covers album in terms of vocals (this okay though). There are some awful tracks, see below...

Perfect for every occasion

Advantages: superb playability, excellent intonation and tone
Disadvantages: can be quite expensive

...I have purchased 9 guitars in total over my progressing career, the 52 Strat reissue was my first guitar and 12 years later it still remains my first instantaneous choice to play. To put this very simply, The 50s Stratocaster, in my opinion is the best guitar on the market by a country mile. This guitar has been in production for over 60 years now which stands for reason, why change the perfect instrument??? ( well they havn't :). Originally the Fender Stratocaster was made in 3 countries which was subsided into 3 different price ranges. The Mexican Strat was the cheapest, then there was the Japanese mid range Strat and finally the more expensive American.
