The nikon 50mm 1.8 - a fantastic portrait lens
Advantages: great quality, low price, prime
Disadvantages: none
...As anyone interested in photography will know - lenses don't come cheap, especially quality lens, except this one.
The 50mm 1.8 has a reputation for quality at a reasonable price and it's a reputation well deserved.
Yes the 50mm is a 'small' lens but it's a prime lens.
Some may find that the need for them to move forwards or backwards to get the correct composition for a photograph is too irritating to make the purchase worthwhile over that of a zoom lens but the increase of quality combined with the price makes that an opinion that I beg to differ.
If you shoot portraits, or are looking to start then the 50mm 1.8 will prove an invaluable piece of equipment, but it's uses are not limited to portraits only.
At 1.8 the 50mm is a fast lens however it dies have a counterpart - the 50mm 1.4. The 1.4 is, by comparison, alot more expensive...

Possibly the best lens I own for my DSLR - The Canon 50mm F/1.8
Advantages: Lightweight, cheap
Disadvantages: None
...This is possibly the best lens I own for my Canon EOS 30D DSLR. (And for £65 what a bargain!)
This is an incredibly light lens, and as I understand it, it is made entirely from plastic. It might feel a little too light, but believe me, it's a well constructed lens which yields fabulous results. It's also very cheap in comparison to other prime lenses, and I would consider it much better value for money than the 50mm f/1.4
As a prime lens, 50mm fixed, f/1.8 it can be used in relatively low light without a flash since it lets so much light through to the camera... Shorter exposure times means your subject has less time to move. It also has a pretty shallow depth of field, so a perfectly focussed subject can have a wonderfully blurred background.
The tiny box this comes in contains the lens, front and rear caps, and a small leaflet...

Ditch ur stock lens & buy THIS! 18-50mm f2.8 EX
Advantages: Lightweight, Compact, Fast f2.8 Aperature throughout the zoom
Disadvantages: Slightly Soft at f2.8, but manageable
...I bought this lens as a replacement for the 18-70mm f3.5-5.6 stock lens that came with my camera, and it was worth every penny.
The increase in image quality, sharpness and clarity of pictures has been amazing. No more fringing around the edges of bright distant objects. No barrel distortion at the very edges of the image. No plasticy cheap feel.
This lens is brilliant, especially if you don't want to fork out the enormous prices for Vibration reduction or Image Stabilising Lenses. (My camera has this built in anyway so ha!).
Having an aperature of f2.8 makes this brilliant for indoor work, as you don't have to use a flash, or push up the iso to noisy values to get sharp clear images.
For example, at 50mm, i can shoot at 1/40sec on this lens at f2.8, my old stock lens would have had me shooting at 1/10sec, which in low...

Cinderella of the lens world!
Advantages: Compact. Light. Versatile. Good image quality at medium apertures.
Disadvantages: Small maximum aperture. Noisy/harsh AF. Slightly limited zoom range.
...aperture, particularly at 50mm and f/5.6, it gets better. Much better! Stopping down at any focal length, to around f/8 or f/11 produces extremely good results. I have made huge prints from files produced by this lens at these apertures, some cropped image prints being equivalent to sections from 20"x30" prints. They have remained surprisingly sharp, even when viewed at normal distance for 8"x10" prints rather than 20"x30" as might be expected.
The lens covers a limited but useful range of focal lengths, making a great little general purpose, highly compact, 'standard' lens. My only criticism is the somewhat harsh and slightly noisy auto-focus. HSM it aint! Not great for candid shots! However, at this price point, what more would you expect and, in my opinion, what more could you ask for? A great little lens.

Macro shooting, Sigma style-ee
Advantages: Good build quality and good value for money .
Disadvantages: Sigma`s claims not met and a slow auto focus .
...Owners and uses of DSLR cameras will know that there are dozens of different lenses that can be attached to the cameras to enable different types of photography to be done correctly.
The original or kit lenses that come with most DSLR`s are capable of doing a bit of everything but only at low levels, if you want to take certain images, get long zoom possibilities or shoot creatively then you need to get the right lens for the right job.
One favourite with a lot of DSLR users is Macro photography which is basically shooting close ups of things, the average camera lens will only focus properly at a minimum distance of around 59cm whereas a macro lens will let you get in much closer. This particular lens (Sigma EX macro lens - 50 mm F/2.8) allows you to focus on objects as close in as 20cm.
Sigma make many other claims about...

A fantastic Landscape an Wildlife Lens
Advantages: Fantastic zoom range, exceptional image quality
Disadvantages: Heavy to carry, difficult to hand hold at 500mm in low light.
...I recently purchased this Sigma 50-500mm f4-6.3 DG EX lens for my minolta.
It is fantastic!
Lets get the negative things out the way so we can focus on the bountiful positives.
1.) It is heavy. Weighing in at nearly 2Kg this is no lightweight piece of kit, but all that weight is necessary for the size and quality of optics used. If you have a good bag like a lowepro or tamrac, then it's really quite easy to trek around with it all day on your back, or hand carry it using the tripod mount/handle.
2.) Due to the aperature not being fantastic, this isn't the best lens for low light fast action photography. There are long telephoto lenses (up to ~300mm) with a wide f2.8 aperature throughout for low light and high shutter speed, but these neither have the range or flexibility of this lens. They cost a lot more too.
Now on to...

Canaons little Gem
Advantages: Cheap, Sharp, small
Disadvantages: Plastic build
...Canons budget 50mm is a star of a lens. It?s cheap, well built (although plastic) and takes brilliant photos. What more could you ask from a lens?
I have used this lens now for just over a year now and it is one of my favourites. A versatile little number, that is always in my kit bag. I have used it for Band shots, where the aperture speed is essential, and it works brilliantly. For portraits where the depth of field adds so much and just as a basic lens for almost anything I can think of, and in all circumstances it is a cracking lens, that creates tack sharp images. The low 1.8 aperture is as sharp as can be and unlike some lenses it does not need stepping up to find the sweet spot.
My only gripe would be that its predecessor the mark 1 was a solid metal number and this mark 2 is only constructed from plastic, which that said, mine...

Possibly the best lense for your camera????
Advantages: Size, weight, fast max f stop, nikon quality
Disadvantages: non
...I have a 70mm to 300mm Sigma zoom and a 28mm to 80mm sigma zoom and this small standard 50mm lens.
The lens costs about £90 new or around the £50 on E Bay.
For everyday photography, I don't think it can be beaten.
The two main advantages are its size and its maximum aperture of f1.8. For the peeps that don't know anything bout photography....the smaller the no. on the lens, the more light it can let in...hense f1.8 being better for available light photography indoors than the f5.5 on one of my zoom lenses.
The small/lightweight standard lense on your camera will drastically reduse the risk of blurred pictures due to 'camera shake' because a zoom lense makes the camera more unstable and magnefies any camera shake..the bigger the zoom the worse it is.
This smallness coupled with being able to use the high aperture to let...

Life Through A Lens
Advantages: Friendly Atmosphere
Disadvantages: Not A Tourist Destination
...number to choose from. La Pause Gourmande doubles up as a hotel and carries with it 4-star rating. Others include La Fiesta (french) and Le Cigalon (italian), which both sound appealing in their name alone. There a few Tunisian and Greek eateries around too if your taste buds require a change.
The main city cinema has 6 screens and will, naturally, play the general films out in France and Europe at that moment. Further out of Lens there is a nice Pathe cinema playing a large number of films if you can cope with the French language.
Some Interesting But Useless Stuff
Lens and its region are located between the 50th and the 51st parallels, that is, on the same latitude as Krakow (Poland), Prague, the North of China and Vancouver. I'm not sure how relevant this is but the region's tourism website seems to like it!

The standard lens that isn't so standard
Advantages: tack sharp, good optical quality, fast focus
Disadvantages: plastic case and mount, not USM
...Often referred to as the standard lens the 50mm was so named as it used to be the lens that came with every SLR camera body. It is sometimes also called standard as it is the lens closest to the human eye and reproduces images similar to the one that we saw when taking a picture (this includes perspective and angles as well as composition).
Most cameras now come with a zoom lens as "standard" usually around 28-90mm, and you might think that the 50mm lens is now not required at all. In my opinion this is not the case....
Some basic details:
Weight: 130g (lightest Canon lens)
Filter: 52mm
Length: 41mm
Focus: 0.45m (closest focus distance)
Three main reasons why you should consider this lens:
1) Optical quality. This lens has very high optical quality. It has fewer elements in the lens and better glass. Your images will be...
