  The Dell E520 - build your own PC

Advantages: Choose your own specs, reasonable price, good customer service
Disadvantages: Sneaky sales tactics in places

...Let's get one thing straight from the off; I'm not a technical expert and I can't tell you the ins and outs of the technical aspects of this PC in any great detail. But what I can and will tell you all about is my experience using this PC and how well it's been able to satisfy my needs so far. Firstly, let's talk about why I chose this particular PC. Well I have to be honest, I chose the E520 mainly because I already have a perfectly good 17" flat panel Dell monitor from my old PC. What does that matter? ...The TomTom Go 520 has a good size screen and is very easy to use. Its packed with features and my favourite is the bluetooth connection to your mobile, even allowing the extraction of numbers contained within your phone book (its handy to note you can duplicate your phone book onto the TomTom, meaning a back up of your phone contacts). When making a call the sound quality is pretty good. The navigation is easy to use and I have had no problem with GPS signal (unlike my previous sat nav). It identifies safety cameras and also alerts you if you are breaking the speed limit, however this feature is also the only drawback I have found. Occasionally it will get the speed limit you are in wrong (the other day I was on a dual carriage and it instead the speed limit was 30m.p.h.). ...As a company, we probably have about 2000 Dell PCs situated across all sites. I have had the Optiplex GX520 for almost a year now without any problem of any description. Mine is primarily used for writing software with Visual Studio and writing database code in MS SQL Server which affects millions of rows of data. These applications would really test the machine to the limits but how would it perform? As this machine was bought as part of a batch, the price paid would not be the same as you would pay for a single unit. Disadvantages: 4-digit Postcodes and POI alerts are just not good enough

The Points of Interest (POIs) part of the SatNav allows you to upload the locations of Safety cameras used to monitor the possibly more hazardous places on your route so you can be apprised of any of these locations and the maximum speed limits that are in force. I found this function next useless on both the new iCN 520s I bought and usually alerted me to places after or as I was passing them rather than giving me prior warning. This was a fault that I could not rectify even by repeatedly reinstalling the software and buying another one to see if this was a one off. It wan not a one off and the situation was only resolved by chancing upon some Tom Tom 5 software that I could load onto the Navman iCN 520 and this both cured the POI alert problem and provided me with full 8-digit postcodes for locations. ...Tom Tom 520T I am pleased with the ease of use and find setting up an itinerary a useful feature giving you more control of the route taken. The clarity of instructions, particularly when reading street names, is excellent. It is also useful to be able to add locations, as a friend lives in a relatively new housing development which was not listed. However the "Points of Interest" feature is extremely limited. I live in the West Midlands, close to Dudley and despite having a zoo at Dudley the POI tells me the nearest zoo is at Chester 61miles away. Similarly, if I ask it for the nearest swimming pool I am directed to The Grand Hotel in Dublin 182miles away. The nearest library is given as 90miles away and the nearest police, dentist, doctor and pharmacy are all 175 miles away in Ireland. These are just a few examples of Tom Tom 520T...

E-machines E-520, GREAT LAPTOP!!

Advantages: looks great, fast, durable, wide screen :)

...very slow when cold). It has 1.00 GB of RAM (random access memory) which keeps the system running nice and smooth and fast. The O/S (operating system) I got with the laptop is Windows Vista Home Basic and it is really good in my opinion. Mine really is the basic one of the range as it doesn't even have a built in webcam but I bought one for a tenner (£10, $20 for americans) and its great. It's like a car... You buy a really good car with electric windows, A/C (air conditioning) and stuff and after a few years it all BREAKS! The basic range E520 laptop is really good as it doesn't have any built in webcam or anything to go wrong. I really would advise this to anyone who wants a great value for money laptop. It is also really easy to use. That is it for now. I hope to hear your experiences with your E520 laptop. See ya! :)...
