...The TomTom Go 520 has a good size screen and is very easy to use. Its packed with features and my favourite is the bluetooth connection to your mobile, even allowing the extraction of numbers contained within your phone book (its handy to note you can duplicate your phone book onto the TomTom, meaning a back up of your phone contacts). When making a call the sound quality is pretty good. The navigation is easy to use and I have had no problem with GPS signal (unlike my previous sat nav). It identifies safety cameras and also alerts you if you are breaking the speed limit, however this feature is also the only drawback I have found. Occasionally it will get the speed limit you are in wrong (the other day I was on a dual carriage and it instead the speed limit was 30m.p.h.). The Points of Interest (POIs) part of the SatNav allows you to upload the locations of Safety cameras used to monitor the possibly more hazardous places on your route so you can be apprised of any of these locations and the maximum speed limits that are in force. I found this function next useless on both the new iCN 520s I bought and usually alerted me to places after or as I was passing them rather than giving me prior warning. This was a fault that I could not rectify even by repeatedly reinstalling the software and buying another one to see if this was a one off. It wan not a one off and the situation was only resolved by chancing upon some Tom Tom 5 software that I could load onto the Navman iCN 520 and this both cured the POI alert problem and provided me with full 8-digit postcodes for locations. 1991 E34 520i

Advantages: Well built. Lasts well Great 6 cyl engine. Classic design.
Disadvantages: Suspension wear. Suspension noise from rear. Economy & insurance

...Have owned it for 5 years. It is 15 years old now. Got through it's National Car Test the other day, apart from some rear bulbs that had gone. The 5 series has pretty much set the standard for executive cars since the late 80's. Though I'm sure Mercedes are trying hard with their E class. I've been very pleased with mine overall. I'll definitely buy another BMW. The car, despite it's advanced age, still does everything well. They are built to last. Engine is still perfect after 144,000 miles. Insurance has been expensive but that's a complaint shared by most Irish motorists (am 35, clean license & no incidents). The 6 cylinder engine is wonderfully smooth and sounds great. I'm not into speed, but it has 150bhp. 4 valves a cylinder. Fuel economy is not good, but I don't drive around town much. The car is heavy at 1500 kg. I'm sure...

The clarity of instructions, particularly when reading street names, is excellent. It is also useful to be able to add locations, as a friend lives in a relatively new housing development which was not listed. However the "Points of Interest" feature is extremely limited. I live in the West Midlands, close to Dudley and despite having a zoo at Dudley the POI tells me the nearest zoo is at Chester 61miles away. Similarly, if I ask it for the nearest swimming pool I am directed to The Grand Hotel in Dublin 182miles away.
