Internal 56K Modem from Creative
Review of Creative Modem Blaster V.92 PCI by
l200man
Advantages: Easy to fit, good software package included, good brand
Disadvantages: only one line in - no audio sockets or line out
...From the well known Creative (SoundBlaster) stables comes this internal V90 PCI 56K modem. Complete with cable, drivers and some usefull software - Mediaring talk, Quicklink Message Centre and Bitware fax/communications.
It only has a line-in socket on the back so you cannot 'daisy-chain' your telephone from this modem.
I found the card easy to fit and configure and was up and running in less than 10 minutes - just fit the moden into your case and boot-up, Windows discovered it had new hardware installed and then asked for the location of the drivers, I pointed it at the correct directory on the CD drive and that was it!
It connected first and every consequent time at a minimum of 48K and once at 50.3K
Good product well worth considering for home use....

Great modem
Review of 3Com Sportster 56K Fax Modem V90 by
helloimmike
Advantages: cheap
Disadvantages:
...The World Wide Web offers businesses and families a range of resources no one could imagine only a few years ago. But to see the detailed graphics and lifelike motion built into today's most advanced sites, or to hear near-CD quality sound, computer users need the fastest downloads possible over analog phone lines. Now the V.90 U.S. Robotics? 56K Faxmodem gives users faster downloads for a more exciting, rewarding online experience.
The ITU has now decided on an international 56K standard: V.90 . U.S. Robotics is the first V.90 -compliant modem brand available. So U.S. Robotics modem users can now get all the Internet they want from any service provider offering either V.90 or x2 technology.
Internet service providers in more than 11,000 North American cities (and worldwide), including America Online, CompuServe, IBM Global...

What exactly is a modem
Review of U.S. Robotics 56K Voice Faxmodem by
cjkace
Advantages: reliable, fast connection
Disadvantages: quite expensive
...on the line.
Try not to use too long a telephone extension cable. If you need 10 metres buy a 10 metre extension, DON'T use two 5 metre cables.
Don't take as gospel, what Windows says your modem speed is. Above 52K is telling lies. Check out www.windrivers.com where they have a way for you to test your modem speed.
Modem speeds are always referred to as 56K or 33.6K BUT that is kiloBITS not kiloBYTES. 56 KiloBITS = 7 kiloBYTES (approximately).
Hope this is a help....

An excellent modem
Review of Zoom/FaxModem 56K Dualmode 2957 by
jonwhite
Advantages: reliable, fast
Disadvantages: None
...My ZOOM 56K V90 Dual Modem has been the best modem I have ever had. When I purchased a new machine it came with its own PCI modem, however this soon came out and was replace with my trusty zoom when I started getting cut off from my ISP. I regularly axchieve speeds of up to 52K and with a usual connection at 49,333 bps.
The modem is fitted internally and has been in service now for almost 2 years without any sign of breakdown. Trusty, reliable and fast are the best way I can describe it. With a Flash Circuit I can even upgrade it should the need arise.
A great modem at a very reasonable price.
Customer support is excellent too....

Perfect 56K modem
Review of U.S. Robotics 56K Voice Faxmodem by
acdc
Advantages: Top speeds, ease of installation, excellent reliability
Disadvantages: Price
...I have owned this modem for 3 years now, since the launch of Freeserve. It is the only modem I have ever bought and the only modem I will ever have needed to buy, it is amazingly reliable.
The manual is clear and concise and there was no hassle installing it with Windows 98. It comes with SuperVoice software to handle voice messages and faxes, which is also easy to use and effective. The package includes a bundle of free internet access trials, which would prove very useful to the first time modem buyer. I have always got the best connection speeds available over a phone line. Perhaps the only negative point about this modem was it's price, I did find it a little high....

Fast little mover
Review of ELSA MicroLink 56k USB by
Infinity
Advantages: Fast, reliable, easy to install
Disadvantages: USB only
...When my old 56k modem packed popped its clogs and went to modem heaven I thought to myself, I want a hassle free modem now. I can't be bothered taking my PC apart just to plug in a card that'll need setting up… So I brought this cool little USB modem. I relied on ELSA's good reputation and thought what the hell. I was not disappointed; ELSA lived up to their reputation with this piece of kit. All I had to do was switch on my PC and plug the modem into a spare USB slot. I installed the driver software and was on the net before I knew it. What a painless installation!
Once I was surfing I was not disappointed at all. This modem is far quicker than my old 56k modem, no question about it. My old modem just seemed to lag and never really wake up and do its job. Well ok it was a WinModem that came with my PC, but even so it should have been...

quick and easy
Review of Diamond SupraMax 56k USB by
JamieMckeen
Advantages: easy to install and quick
Disadvantages: needs usb
...I've tinkered with modems for years and I have to say this Diamond's SupraExpress 56K USB modem is one of the most problem-free modems I've ever used and definitely one of the easiest to install.
Take this colorful iMac-like modem out of the box, plug the included cable into the modem and a USB port and then hook a phone line to the modem. Load the installation CD with the drivers, setup your ISP configurations and that's it. It was all of 10 minutes before I was surfing happily along. This is a true plug-n-play modem.
Connecting to Mindspring and the Microsoft Network Internet service providers, the connection never dropped below 45333bps, which is average for a 56K modem. In the two weeks we used the SupraExpress, it only dropped the connection twice--both times on MSN. Logging onto Blizzard's Battle.net proved a positive...

A power of good
Review of Diamond SupraMax 56k USB by
darkteckno
Advantages: Easy Insall
Disadvantages: none
...This little modem brought an immediate 10% to 20% improvement in my internet connection speeds and reduced the erratic behaviour I was experiencing with my internal modem, making my connection on a poor line more stable. Being USB it is dead easy to install, and the communication software, Ring Central, which comes with it, is really very good. If you are looking for a new modem, at this price you can't go far wrong. This SupraMax 56K USB adds the convenience of a USB connection to a brand already known for user-friendly modem solutions. The one-step USB installation makes using the SupraMax a breeze. You just plug it in and it’s ready to go! Plus, the SupraMax supports the 56K standard (V.90) for European-wide ISP support. As with all Diamond Supra products, it comes with free, top-rated Internet and fax software....

Mine is Blue, what colour is Yours
Review of Diamond SupraMax 56k USB by
ia_young
Advantages: easy to install, quiet
Disadvantages: none
...Over the past few years computers have started to become more and more fashionable. Along with this new computer designs such as the look of Apple computers have become more trendy. Along with this trend to start making computers pleasant to look at the peripherals that acompany computers are also getting a make over. Why this is happening I don't know, may be to increase sales? This is not an opinion about that, I just thought it was a good way to start off my review of the Diamond Max 56k Modem, which by the way is a nice relaxing blue colour!
** Specification **
This is a standard Hayes compatible modem, which compies to the K56Flex and V.90 communication standards. This basically means that this modem will work with virtually every Internet Service Provider in Europe (handy if you travel about!).
The max transfer rate...

Not so super
Review of Diamond SupraMax 56k USB by
SimonJ
Advantages: Looks good, cheap, USB connection
Disadvantages: Quality problems? Poor technical support
...I bought the Diamond Supramax 56K USB to replace a dead US Robotics Flash modem. I guess I have to admit that one of the main reasons I was attracted to the product was the price. The old US Robotics modem had been a good buy, but the prices in the shops for the latest US Robotics modems are quite high when compared to the Supramax. Also the Supramax uses the latest USB technology to connect to the PC whereas the USR modems use COM ports. I had discounted any internal ‘WinModems’ since they use up a large amount of system resources to run them. External modems don’t rely on the PC for it’s processing power and therefore don’t affect it’s performance.
The design of the Supramax is very modern and could be compared to that of the iMac, with its opaque coloured plastic casing. It’s very slim and should be very easy to install since the USB...
