...** Nikon D40x Digital SLR ** This is my first digital SLR camera I really like taking pictures of mainly our families dogs and cars my main hobbies, my other half had previously had been using a digital SLR that belonged to his dad, so we both went a long to Jessops that is well know for selling really good photography stuff. We had a look at various models of camera including the Canon Eos 400d which is one of this cameras biggest rival models, also looked at four or five other digital SLR models. Then eventually we started looking at the Nikon D40x my other half knew someone who had the previous model to this the Nikon D40 which had been really good, the other half had used it previously and found it a really good quality camera. Nikon D40x DSLR

Advantages: Compact for an SLR, easy to use, excellent picture quality.
Disadvantages: Battery life only allows 1000ish photos to be taken

Advantages: Excellent image quality and build
Disadvantages: Average value for money, limited choice of lenses

..., where the camera decides everything including whether or not to use flash. After this are several creative modes, which largely change how the image is processed. Then come the manual modes, which offer enthusiasts more control. The D40x is an excellent option for first time DSLR buyers who want a camera that will grow as they grow as photographers. I would highly reccomend it, but if you cannot afford it would also reccomend the D40, a similar camera....

Nikon D40x

Advantages: Small, feature packed, easy to use, Built in Help system, auto and scene modes
Disadvantages: only three AF points, manual not so good

...we can see the result straight away. I should say that I am not a professional photographer, more an amateur who wanted to get his hands on a Digital SLR and see what he could do. So this review will be from an average joe. I was originally going to purchase a Pentax K100d as it was the cheapest DSLR around and with anti shake, even though the Canon 400d and Nikon D40x did seem to be the market leaders. I then found that the K100d had been superceded by the K100d Super and the price had gone up closer to the canon and Nikon. I spotted an offer at Currys of a Nikon D40x with 18-55mm lense for £405 plus a 55-300mm nikon lense for an extra £30 and on top of that buy now (with no deposit) pay next september. I couldn't resist. I am glad the offer came around because in the end I think I would have had to upgrade the 6MP Pentax...

Advantages: Light, over 10mp, takes SD cards
Disadvantages: Limited lens choice.

...My return to SLR photography after two "compact" digital cameras. THe D40x is amazingly light compared with my previous 35mm SLRs. The basic auto prgrammes are pretty well foolproof, you really have to be doing something stupid not to get decent results with this camera. What made me go for it .... 10.8 mp , takes SD cards, cheaper than the D80. If you go for the manual settings then you have to know what you are doing. The instruction manual is precise and fairly comprehensive. It does take a bit of reading and experimentation with the various settings. Sigma AF 70-300mm f4-f5.6 APO DG Macro

Advantages: Decent quality on a budget but only for APS-C digital SLR's.
Disadvantages: Really quite poor when used with full-frame digital SLR's.

...of good quality. I don't know if it is simply a variation between samples but my own APO version appeared to have somewhat 'smoother' zooming than my friend's non APO one. As usual for Sigma, a decent lens hood (barrel type) and a soft case are included in the package. The lens sports a 58mm filter thread, so filters are relatively inexpensive to purchase. Being of more 'ordinary' status in the Sigma hierarchy, this AF 70-300mm f/4-f/5.6 DG APO Macro, has none of the more elaborate 'bells and whistles' evident on the more expensive EX range. What does this mean? Well, you don't get Sigma's superb HSM (Hypersonic Motor) AF (auto-focusing) for near silent and very fast AF, resulting in a somewhat more unsophisticated, noisy (although not overly so) and slightly 'harsh' action. best camera under £500

Advantages: fantastic value for money
Disadvantages: some older lenses will not auto focus

...As a newcomer to digital slrs and slrs altogether i have spent hours trying to decide which camera to buy. i narrowed it down to 2 choices, the nikon d40x and the canon 400d. these are both brilliant cameras for their price but the nikon performs slightly better in my opinion and is about £30 cheaper. if you are comparing this to the earlier d40 i would highly recommend paying the extra money for this as the extra 4 mega pixels will be vital if you are planning on enlarging your photos to anything bigger than a3. the optical quality of the 18-55mm kit lens is outstanding compared to the 18-55mm lens that comes with the canon which produces slightly soft images when enlarged to bigger than a4. Features of this camera include ISO range 100-1600 (extendable to 3200) 4,000 shutter speed etc. all of this info is displayed...

A lovely SLR - Great Quality

Advantages: Clear, crisp photos, easy to use, good battery life, can use old film lenses
Disadvantages: Bulkier than a compact

...I bought it 5 years ago, but the picture quality does not compare. It is so nice to have the SLR and really zoom in to items that I want to take. It has taken some fantastic shots of my dog, which really would not sit still! Weight and Size wise of course the Compact Camera wins hands down but that not why you buy a SLR. However this D40X is easy to carry around and not to bulky. The LCD screen is of a good size and you can very clearly see your photo and zoom in. There is also an editing feature where you can edit your photos while they are still on your camera, which includes cropping. The lens that the Camera comes with is superb and I?ve also tried my boyfriends Old Lens for his Film Nikon SLR and they fit also (but don?t automatic focus).
