The Dell Vostro 1000
Advantages: price, durability, look, speed, memory
Disadvantages: N/A
...I bought the Dell Vostro 1000 for starting a Degree last september. The Vostro 1000 is marketed at businesses and as such is installed with Windows Vista Business. The laptop came with 2GB of RAM which is ample to run vista comfortably.
The fact that the laptop is marketed for businesses has made no difference to me. In fact it has probably helped me with my degreee as it doesn't come with all the extra unnecessary rubbish that others do (e.g. solitaire, hearts etc)!
The Vostro has been able to handle everything I have thrown at it; every game I have installed, the microsoft ultimate 2007 package, etc.
The Dell Vostro 1000 is amazing quality for money and I would thoroughly recommend it, expecially for anyone on a limited budget.
The battery once charged does not last for ages but it is not too bad at all; as with most laptops...

Dell Vostro 1000
Advantages: Cheap and well spec'd
Disadvantages: No disadvantages when priced at £352
...of Dell laptops always seem to be getting better. I made the decision to buy.
The snag I found was this Dell Vostro 1000 was a range that is only available to business customers. This wasn't really a major problem, as I could just buy it as a business. Purchasing as a business has a drawback, but it also has a pro point.
The drawback to buying as a business is that the distance selling regulations only apply to consumers, so you cannot send it back within 7 days if you change your mind.
The pro point is that the laptops tend to have less rubbish installed on them, than their equivalent consumer models.
The specifcation of the Laptop I purchased was:
AMD AthlonTM 64 X2 Dual Core Processor TK-53 (1.7GHz,512KB)
2GB RAM
Integrated ATI Radeon® Xpress 1150 HyperMemoryTM
15.4" Wide Screen WXGA (1280x800) display
120GB Hard...

Dell Vosro 1000 Excellent laptop
Advantages: Cheap and reliable
Disadvantages: Short battery life
...I love this laptop so much and it was also cheap which is always a plus.
The 6.26 lb black magnesium alloy chassis appears very solid and makes the laptop look smart. It has Athlon 64 bit X2 AMD processor, a 15.4 inch Widescreen WXGA (1280x800) widescreen, 1GB of RAM, and a 80GB hard drive. There is built in wireless internet in the form of a Dell 1390 802.11g Wi-Fi card.
I think there are both pros and cons with this laptop as with most products. The pros are cheap, wireless internet, fast at start up and loading internet pages which unfortunatly I cant say for my Hp 3gb Laptop. It has a big, clear screen aswell.
The cons are Short battery life and the sound quality is not too good. I would definately recommend this to anyone though as it is brilliant for the price....

Dell Vostro 1700: the dark horse of notebooks
Advantages: Built-in webcam, huge number of ports, clever function buttons, media button panel, nice screen
Disadvantages: Basically none except that it is slightly heavy because it contains a lot!
...The new Vostro series from Dell is a dark horse. Despite not getting the attention of Dell's mega-high-spec machines such as the XPS, these laptops designed for small businesses are actually probably the best to buy for any purpose.
As usual, the Vostros are customisable so that you can pay more for better components. A standard configuration will include a dual core Intel Core 2 Duo processor at 2GHz - a very fast processor indeed - alongside an nVidia GeForce separate graphics card, 1GB of RAM and 160GB of hard-disk space. They also come with Windows Vista (or XP if you prefer). Combined, what this provides is an extremely smooth Windows experience. The graphics card handles all the new visual effects in Windows Vista effortlessly, and the large amount of RAM also speeds up programs a great deal. All of these features can be...

Dell Vostro 1700
Advantages: Great all rounder, fast, durable and good pricing, value for money
Disadvantages: Some minor problems like power cable sometimes not recognised
...The dell Vostro 1700 is a good piece of technology. It have used it now for 6 months roughly and the thing i find great about dell's computers is their durability even when kept turned on for long hours (sometimes a couple of days in my case!!).
This laptop is powerful and has a good quality screen that does not get marked easyly, unlike the other new laptops from dell, where the screen gets marked easyly due to the ultra clean and shinyness of it.
I reccomend this product if you need a laptop to go, with a wide screen, full keyboard (includes the extra numbers like on the normal keyboard) and you will be using it for things like word processing, internet browsing, website development and more! All types of home and small business uses are covered with this decent laptop.
However i do not reccomend this if you intend to use...

Inspiring Inspiron from Dell
Advantages: Good spec, reasonable price, great processor
Disadvantages: The piano black surface attracts dust and dirt.
...I purchased the Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop back in January for my daughter's birthday. I had a limited budget but wanted to get her something with decent enough spec for playing computer games should she wish to do this, and a large hard drive as she is a big fan of making videos on her digital camera and downloading music - two things which can eat up hard drive space.
I did a fair bit of research before purchasing and decided I wanted to get the best spec I possibly could for my money and the Inspiron ticked all the boxes. I paid £399 in January 2009 in Currys for the laptop which was the absolute limit on my budget.
The Dell I purchased has a dark blue coloured lid, however the rest of it is a shiny piano black which looks lovely. I would have preferred metal for the mousepad area - it feels sturdier and doesn't seem to attract...

A Cut Above The rest
Advantages: Decent Battery life. built with care, won't fall apart any time soon.
Disadvantages: A little hevy for some. Limited customization
...There are many mini laptops on the market right now, such as the Asus Eee PC (which I have reviewed previously). A while ago I started looking for the best one. As stupid as it sounds, the 15"inch Dell Vostro has to be my pick of the litter. Why you might ask? Because it is a budget laptop with no signs of cheapness.
The build is sturdy enough, nothing feels like it is about to snap off, I would go as far as saying that it has been carefully and thoughtfully designed. The keyboard is also magnificient, which has hardly any flex at all.
Like all Dell products, this can be customized to have light energy use and large battery life or vica versa. So it can be as portable as you want it to be, as long as you can lift it, which I don't find too bad at all, my 5ft tall girlfriend tells me otherwise though. So please take into account...

The 'Anti Mac'
Advantages: Great build quality, damn quick, looks cool as hell.
Disadvantages: Poor screen, no DVI out, no docking station, heavy
...As another review states, Dell Vostros are for small business, with no trialware. A review can't really generalise on performance since you can make a machine to your own spec.. So, I'll detail my spec and then comment on that, plus make generalisations about e.g. build quality.
** My Spec **
Core 2 duo, 1.8ghz
2 Gig ram
160 Gig 5400rpm HD
Geforce 8600 256 Mb
Card reader
Integrated camera
Bluetooth
DVD burner
Firewire input
15.4 inch widescreen truelife display
*** Performance ***
Very quick. It plays Quakewars at 1280 with everything up up high and 2x antialiasing. For the uninitiated, Quakewars is a brand next gen. game that really punishes hardware. The Vista speed index is 4.7, GFX for games is 5.1, GFX for Aero takes it down to the 4.7 figure.
*** Ergonomics ***
Screen
Bright but unevenly lit...

Great Laptop for Great Value
Advantages: Fast connection, clear graphics, value for money
Disadvantages: Big, heavy & non-sensitive touch pad issue
...it has Vista on it as a operating system, but this has a good range of features that is included with it. Open source software is also included with the laptop and this has to be downloaded, I recommend you do this if you understand what you are going to be using, as open source software is very different to the normal Microsoft software. I found the ease of use good, however the touch pad for the mouse is not very sensitive and you have to press it couple of times to make it work as well as the old fashioned style mouse. I also found that the system is set out different for file storing however you soon get to grips with it. The laptop has great graphics, clear and precise, a built in Google taskbar that you can remove if you do not want it. The system is quick at start-up and shut down, and has the option to have remote help from Dell...
