...After purchasing a Pocket PC (HP hx4700) mainly for use as a calender assistant and portable web browsing device, I soon discovered that it could also be used as a portable Sat Nav device as well, allowing applications such as Tomtom to be uploaded onto it, and for those who are interested in light aircraft flying, like me, memory map is fantastic aviation GPS program which can be used on using actual CAA aviation maps with GPS data overlay for flight planning and tracking purposes. The one extra hardware add-on which is needed to allow tomtom and memory map to function is a GPS receiver device. I had previously purchased a Compact Flash card extension GPS receiver which plugged into the Pocket PC's existing ports directly, unfortunately, it was very poor at satellite tracking and position locking, taking several minutes to lock-on to...
Advantages: Cheap and easy to use Disadvantages: Build quality an issue
...****** Introduction ******
Welcome to my second review based around GPS receivers even though this is my second review this product was actually the first GPS receiver I purchased. I won't go into too much detail into the workings of GPS as I covered this in detail in my earlier review of the internet Bluetooth GPS receiver( Why not take a look at this review go on you know you want to).GPS basically uses a series of satellites that orbit the planet to triangulate your position on the planet. A gps receiver reads the signal and with the use of navigation software (for example TomTom) and allows you to plan routes based on your current position and your destination.
******* Product Overview ********
This unit is a GPS receiver that works by slotting into a compact flash port in my case the one that I have on my IPAQ pda...
Advantages: Great value for the money. Disadvantages: No wireless connection
...I just wanted to own a GPS for a long time, and recently I could get this PDA with integrated GPS at last.
First of all, I'd like to share with you why did I chose this one, among all the choices available.
What's a GPS?
GPS means Global Positioning System. A GPS receiver is a piece of hardware capable of calculate the position using the signals received from at least three satellites of the GPS network. Civil use GPS receivers can calculate our position in the globe with a precision of about 15 m.
Why do you need a GPS?
First , i'm a techie, so I love to have this kind of stuff. The second reason is for using it in the car. I'm traveling quite a lot nowadays, and having a co-pilot who knows all the addresses and how to reach them is a good point. I also wanted to use it when trekking, and use it in my motorbike. So I don...

Review of Acer N35 GPS
Advantages: Lightweight and waterproof Disadvantages: Wrist Strap
...I am a commercial fisherman who relies on both exact and dependability in a Gps navigation aid.
The Garmin Gps 72 is a very dependable unit i use another brand on my boat while working and i have the gp 72 beside it and have found it to be a better unit allround, so i hear you all say, well this is why i mentioned my other unit, the other ones costs nearly £700 and is a fixed unit, with a smaller display.
My gp 72 cost me £130 and is handheld and portable, also with the correct lead available from Garmin you can download and update data from your computer or laptop.
I use mine for work when i am called out for the HM Coastguard Cliff Rescue Team that i am a member of and found it is very accurate and dependable.
It has a clear display excellent features easy to use menus and functions, setup is easy as all you have to do is...

Review of Garmin GPS 72
Advantages: Good Route Planner, Cheap in Price Disadvantages: Does not inform Instructions after wrong turn, Informs of turnings too late.
...WHAT IS IT?
This product is customizable trip planning software with an included GPS system reciever. All the now normall features for a standard GPS package are included such as Voice Prompted Directions so you can be told exsacly what to do and other features such as favorite settings etc.
This package seems to me as if it was designed to replace the need for a GPS however as i will come to later it does not seem to fill all recuirements that it should. In my opinion this package is fairly good for someone looking to travel europe and not wanting to spend mega bucks on a new gps, But for everyone else this product falls short.
DID I LIKE IT?
To answer my own question. No i did not like this product. Altho this product in many ways does pretty much what it should in many other ways it does not. Now on to my main gripe...
Advantages: Excellent sat-nav package at low price, well-spec'd handheld computer Disadvantages: Advertising unclear: hidden costs of full European package
...When I decided too buy this product, I wasn't specifically looking for a handheld computer, I was after a decent (but inexpensive) GPSsatellite navigation system; and the Acer n35 is not only the cheapest GPS-equipped handheld, it's actually cheaper than most dedicated sat-nav systems, so the fact that this device functions as a computer with numerous other facilities is a pure bonus!
You can easily pay £400 for a dedicated portable sat-nav system like the Tom Tom Go, and similar amounts for sat-nav equipped handhelds, but the Acer can be had for as little as £240 brand new with full guarantee. You see already the main economic advantage, especially when you compare it to the four-figure sums that car manufacturers charge for built-in sat-nav systems....
The Acer n35 is basically the n30 without BlueTooth capability...

Review of Acer N35 GPS
Advantages: Very accurate position finder. High functionality. Disadvantages: Needs batteries. Can operate continuously for only 24 hours
...of guesswork and estimation in this and in poor conditions, updating the chart can be difficult and especially so if the crew is inexperienced at boat handling.
Magellan GPS 2000 - a solution?
Yes – one of them. Never a substitute for accurate chartwork, DR navigation and log-keeping. There are other ways of finding out position like Decca (Europe) and Loran (in the US), but both these methods, based on radio beacons have built-in errors and still require some adjustment. Satellite navigators like GPS 2000 used to have built-in errors for US defence considerations, but in August 2000 these were removed and the accuracy of readings improved from around 10-100metres down to what is now about 1-3 metres from my observations.
Position co-ordinate systems
There are quite a few alternatives provided as standard – Ordnance...

Review of Magellan GPS 2000
Advantages: Datalogger, Sat Nav, so many plusses ! Disadvantages: Slightly difficult to set up
...Royaltek Bluetooth GPS (Datalogger)
For the uninitiated I'll quickly give a brief description of what purpose this item serves.
There are several choices for running Satellite Navigation software, the main two are either buy a standalone product (such as Tom-Tom, Garmin etc) or buy a PDA (See my other review on Dell Axim) using a GPS satellite receiver (this is what the Royaltek Bluetooth GPS receiver is)
If you have decided to choose the PDA route, you will need at least three things, the PDA, the GPS (Royaltek in this case) and software to run (I have chosen TomTom Navigtor 5 as it seems to be one of the market leaders.
There are now two options for your GPS receiver, wired (which just means that the gps must be somehow connected directly to the PDA , this can either be via a wire or SD Card via the slot on the PDA OR via...
Advantages: Improves reception, loading time is dramatically reduced, Much better accuracy Disadvantages: plating is wearing off the connector
...and finally brought forward to the dashboard with a couple of feet to spare. The antenna itself is a small plastic box with a strong magnet on the bottom, so theer is no fixing to worry about.
I plugged the lead into the Sat Nav and switched on. In a couple of seconds it was displaying "Ready to Navigate"
Since then, about 10 days ago, I have covered over 2,000 miles and have not lost reception once, including the wooded section of the A350 just north of Shaftesbury in Dorset, where I always lost signal for about 2 miles.
I have noticed some of the plating wearing off the plug, exposing bare plastic.
This is because It is not a good idea to leave the SAT NAV in the car when parked, so I have to take the cable out if I park somewhere dodgy, like city centres. I must say that this does not appear to have affected performance.
It...
Advantages: Easy to use,Reliable and flexible Disadvantages: An extra item to carry around
...~~~~Introduction~~~~
The following review is for a separate GPS receiver unit that connects to portable devices via Bluetooth and allows you to run satellite navigation software (satnav for short and to save me time typing).I will give an overview of the technology behind the product and then a review on my experience with using the product.GPS is a technology that I am a big fan of and it has a wide range of applications and uses in everyday life and is easily affordable for even the tightest of budgets.
~~~~What is GPS? ~~~~
GPS (Global Positioning Satellites) is a network of 24 satellites which orbit the planet and were originally launched in the mid 80's by the US department of defence. It was meant for military use but civilian access was granted and allowed for the development of satnav as we know it...
