BRA you say?

Advantages: cheapest ADSL2+ router around; all-in-one solution
Disadvantages: confusing setup

...I bought this router from Amazon just before Christmas, taking around six weeks to arrive. They said it would take one to two weeks to dispatch, and now I know why... INITIAL REACTION On arrival it was evident that the product was meant for another country, as the manual and instructions were in another (European) language. However, the basic manual (and nothing else) was available in English on an included CD. The package also came with an odd beige device that takes RJ-11 cables. The important thing, however, is how this thing works. HOW THIS THING WORKS The SMC7904BRA is a ADSL2+ broadband router and modem in one. ADSL2+ basically means it supports broadband connections faster than 2Mb - normal ADSL routers and modems can't go any faster. It's a four port router, which means, if you want to share a broadband connection...

netgear > (smc, dlink, belkin, linksys)

Advantages: bulletproof, but not for idiots
Disadvantages: old firmware sometimes fails to renew IP lease

...If you're shopping on a budget you're going to get crap. That's life. Own up to it. One buys netgear for SOLID RELIABILITY and power user features. Unfortunately the early firmwares for this particular model were a little weak for cable modem users (me), but alright for DSL users (me too). The new firmware solves the issue of mysteriously disappearing IP leases (which used to require a router reset every three days once the issue manifested) The lastest firmware contains many DHCP fixes, adds upnp, and other stuff that doesn't concern me. I would like to see netgear go opensource on firmware as did Cisco's linksys. The sveasoft firmware for the Cisco Linksys WRT54GS2+ rocks! (even though sveasoft continues to violate the GPL) A (turbo) / G (turbo) / B coverage is awesome. Even at the fringes of range (in a 6000 sq ft...

Review of NETGEAR WGT624 108 Mbps Wireless Firewall Router - wireless router

First foray in the world the wireless!

Advantages: Easy to setup, stable, flexible options
Disadvantages: Hard to diagnose problems if not connected to PC

...; you just go to the correct website (generally 192.168.2.1 for those interested) and follow the set up process, which handles everything. You either pick one of the pre-setup ADSL details, or put in the ones your ISP will give you, and after a quick save, it's all up and running with absolutely no fuss. From that point on you can leave it, or enter the advance settings and tweak away; it'll just keep on running happily no matter what you chuck at it. As a first time user of wireless products, this was perfect for me, I had the network setup instantly, and everyone could connect. I then went into the advanced settings and started tweaking. Again, very simple, it's all via a web interface that's well thought out, nothing is more than about 3 clicks away. And almost every setting is changeable, from the IPs used on the network, to the SSID...

Never crashed... highly recommended

Advantages: It's small and it's never crashed.
Disadvantages: No disadvantages so far. A quick call to D-link and it was up in minutes.

...The 320T replaced a BT Voyager \ Viking 205 when I changed an smc 2804 for a d-link 655. The Voyager \ Smc combination crashed everytime we had heavy data loads (2 or more people streaming or downloading). We have 2 desktops ( 1 wired \ 1 wireless) 3 laptops (1 wired \ 2 wireless) 2 xbox 360's (1 wired \ 1 wireless) a Wii (wireless) and 3 Ds's. The 320T (and the 655) have never crashed, and handle all the connections easily). I've never had to reset either of these since they were installed, and recommend this double act to anyone who needs speed and range. In case anyone was wondering, I don't work for D-link. I'm a musician who needs upload speed to transfer songs to my music site, and range for the rare days I take my pc in the garden and get some sun !...

BT - British Telecom customer services

Advantages: leading the way in the 21CN network, wideranging availability
Disadvantages: dreadful customer services, not answering calls/emails, long complaint SLA

...BT customer service - telephone and internet. BT are trying to charge me £180 in bills, contract breaches, cancellations and late payment fees - resulting in baliff letters. We do not have service with BT and have never had service with BT! We have services with Talk Talk Today I tried for the fifteenth time in three and a half months to contact BT's SMC in an attempt to get them to stop billing me. Why fifteen times? Because I can never get through. Again today the line kept me on queued loop for exactly 1 hour. This has happened a lot of times. I managed to get through the first occasion but was bounced around 5 departments until a rude gentleman in billing dept cut me off. The only other time I managed to get through I was told the phone number on my bill was for a different account code and was transferred to...

Trust my Card Reader

Advantages: reliable, USB2, vista compat, 42 different formats, lively lighty up bits
Disadvantages: bit boring to look at

...I bought this card reader at that famous hit-tech computer store ;) Tesco. So I didn't expect that much especially at the price but it was going to be better than my ultra cheap no name card reader it replaced. I've been using this card reader now for about 9 months. It cost £9.00 when I bought it so I didn't expect too much. But it surpassed my expectations and has beaten off my attempts to replace it with newer more modern units (usually ones advertising it will read 99 different card types and ones which are much much prettier). The Trust EasyConnect Card Reader is a USB 2 device which does its job without fuss or fault. It accepts cards via the front panel or the back panel and handles (amongst othersCompact Flash, Mini Drive, SMC, XD (for Fuji and Olympus), MS, MMC, and SD cards. Basically, if you have a memory card for your...

Part Exchange - with Cash Back

Advantages: I got what I asked for!
Disadvantages: They initially tried selling what they had, not what I wanted.

...I recently needed to sell my R Reg Rover 216 Cabriolet and buy a more practical, cheaper, but still reliable, "family" car. I decided to take it back to the dealer where I first purchased the car to see if they would buy it back and for how much. SMC at Bath Road, Slough were very helpful considering I told them that my next car was not necessarily going to be a Rover and that I needed at least £1000 in my pocket after selling the Cabriolet and purchasing the next car. They checked over my 4 year old Cabriolet and considered it to be a "good news" car, ie good condition, full service history, definately resellable. I was offered £5000 for the Cabriolet (a fair price I thought) and part exchange with cash back should they find a suitable "family" car for me. My criteria for the next car was specific; price approximately £3...
