...While not being quite as good as I had hoped after reading some initial reviews of the game, S.T.A.L.K.E.R is still well worth a look. Set in the area surrounding the Chernobyl power plant, the game has you exploring the radiation-filled 'Zone' in an attempt to find out its secrets, while battling the different factions, army troops and mutants that inhabit it.
The story of the game is fairly intriguing, and without giving too much away, there are multiple endings to the game depending on whether the player follows the main plot or not, and also on the player's rating at the end of the game. Throughout the game you are given missions by the NPCs that you meet, some of which are related to the story of the game, and others which you can choose whether you want to do them or not. This was going to be an interesting game?.. or so I had thought. I know it had been touted since May 2005, but I didn't get it until this summer, but my understanding is it didn't get released until early this year, but I don't know how accurate this information is.

I really wasn't sure what to expect when I first began playing this game. I knew little about it, other than it was a first person shooter style.
I love it! Now its a simple enough comment to make, but it certainly isn't a simple game to try and explain.
So the real problem begins when I try and tell people just what this game is! Its like a mix of so many different games over...

...When you first start playing S.T.A.L.K.E.R, it seem to be a simple first person shooter. The controls are the same as you would expect, and you set out on your first mission. You speak to a few people, find out where your target is, and then head off.
You find some allies, and start to assault a compound. You sneak up through the trees, matching the pace of your allies. Shots break out - some of you have been spotted. A full gun fight erupts. They see you. Bullets fly past. You return fire, running for cover. Then, you die.
That is the point you realise that this is not a normal FPS, but a true strategic game, where the guns work properly and stealth is key.
The graphics, if you have a suitably powerful machine, are excellent, with weather and storms effecting the lighting and mood of the game. The sound is also excellent...

...,500 limit, I thought that was good enough for me as 8.5% of £2,500 earns around £170 a year. To open and to retain this account with the generous in-credit rate, there is a requirement and that is for me to pay in at least £500 a month, which for me isn't a problem. Furthermore, you can always pay money in and transfer it straight out again into another account.
OPENING THE ACCOUNT
Opening the account was very easy and I did it all online. Simply filled in my personal details, and gave them extra information such as employment, earnings, residential status, etc and how much I intended to pay in each month. A few days later, I received a confirmation letter through the post, followed by many separate mailings from A&L for the other bits included with the Current account such as the debit card, PIN, cheque/giro book and savings account...

There is a computer in California called A.L.I.C.E. and you can have conversations with it and it is almost like chatting to a human. I’m serious. It is all perfectly true.
I found out about A.L.I.C.E by reading a fascinating article entitled Can Machines Think? by lap0530 a former college professor in the States, that was posted on WrittenByMe and decided to try it out.

...My experience of business banking with A&L has been truly terrible. Opening an account with them is the single biggest mistake I have made so far in running my small business.
I have been left angry and frustrated by this bank, which is why I am taking my business elsewhere.
I urge any small business (or indeed, large business) not to open an account with A&L - they should not get your business as they will not treat you with any respect, or make your working life any easier, yet much more difficult - I warn you.
The customer service is practically non-existent. I have found it inexcusably difficult to manage my account with them, as I have to - post, fax, phone and double check daily that my requests are being carried out. I mean simple requests, such as transfer of money, ordering of debit cards. I have wasted hours...

Initially, they get very little response, and can barely stifle their giggles. But just when they think that nothing is going to happen, the glass jerks gently and then starts sliding across the board at breakneck speed. ...and that it has S.W.A.L.K. written on the back. Preston is a bit embarrassed when she tells him what that means and goes off to open his letter in peace.
Little Max tells him how much she misses him and asks him what he does at home and who his friends are. He sits down and writes a letter back explaining what he gets up to and all about his family, friends and school.
He then rushes to post it remembering to add kisses to the bottom and writing S.W.A.L.K. on the envelope.

The pictures in this book are very funny and as well as the text telling the story there are lots of speech bubbles coming from the characters? mouths so we get amusing side stories as we go along.

...In progress for god knows how long, continuously assumed as being ?Abandon-ware?, S.T.A.L.K.E.R has finally found its way on to the market, and admittedly, it?s about time. The game is, in terms of use and control, just your average first person shooter. WASD to move, mouse to shoot, etc. The real originality of the game kicks in when you realise that this game is not just a shooter, but an RPG. The scale of it is immense, and exploration is key. Who knows what lurks unfound in the shattered ruins of Chernobyl?
