Arsenal put 501 past the opposition

...It goes without saying, if you're not an Arsenal fan, this probably isn't for you. Unless you love watching quality goals and spectacular moments. At 501 goals and nearly 3 hours running time it might seem like overkill, but time will easily fly as you pour over some great times. Disadvantages: Not an easy access format.

.... Bescherelle does this. 501 German Verbs does not. It is a huge brick for a start. Yes that's good if you want a large reference on the shelf for when you can't find that verb anywhere else - but for me it is never a first choice: I prefer to grab a small handy book that I can flick through quickly with my thumb. Moving inside, the tables themselves could be a lot better laid out, with bold print where needed, boxes containing the most inportant items and simpler titles. The names of the tenses differ from other established publications, which can be confusing, and in order to find and understand the past participle, for example, you need to already have read the introduction in full, (and if you forget between uses, sorry, you gotta read it again!) making the book read more like a grammar than a verb tables book. ...First, a note of correction ? if you are looking for this book on one of the merchant sites, the author of record is Henry Struzt, not Bill Bryson. Strutz was an associate professor of languages at State University of New York in Alfred, New York, when he put this book together. The volume I have has a publication date of 1972 ? this is, however, the kind of book that doesn?t really go out of date. Language does change, but the basics of languages remain steady over several generations in general, and German is no exception. The basic core of the language remains constant, so this book holds up over time. Subsequent printings of this book may add a verb here and drop a verb there (given the title, it will always try to stay at 501 verbs), but the vast majority will remain the same. A Reminder That Life Is Too Short....

Advantages: Good Coffee Table book; fun to browse through
Disadvantages: I'm never going to visit all these places without a large lottery win

...- the emphasis is on Europe and the US. This is a lovely book to dip in and out of even though I would change some of the choices if I had written it, overall I enjoy flicking through it. My copy is a hardcover and is very heavy. Already some pages have become loose, and I wonder if that is why the book had such a good offer. The book, of course, is no substitute for a proper guide book should you be visiting any of these cities, and you are reminded that political situations can change rapidly. For those interested there are also two sister books: 501 Must Visit Destinations and 501 Must Visit Natural Wonders. I did try and count how many of the selected cities I have visited myself but lost count, - I think it was about 65 so only 436 cities to go. Now, where did I put that lottery ticket??...

...Even though I've only really seriously started to consider myself a linguist in the past two or three years, my book collection is already growing at a fairly steady rate. Dictionaries are of course an important tool, but one of my most frequently used books is my verb book. Funnily enough I've never set out to buy a verb book - odd though it seems when I start a new language (something I always seem to be doing, I've just set about learning a bit of Chinese) a dictionary is one of the first things I set about getting...but for someone seriously thinking about learning a language, a verb book is a must have. ~~ Why 501 Verbs ~~ I don't quite remember how I came to buy this book. I think I saw it in a bookshop and thought, if I'm going to get a verb book, I may as well do it properly. This is a pretty hefty book...

Advantages: Easy to use, tasty, quick recipes that are healthy
Disadvantages: My mum thinks this means I'm actually on a diet
