A Load of Number Twos

Advantages: A couple of tracks aren't too bad
Disadvantages: Most of them are pretty lame

...'t sound all that interested again. Like others earlier on the album, this is another long track and again one that I'd lost interest in long before the final note. There's a drum beat at the start of "Deluxe" that reminds me of Terence Trent D'Arby's "Sign Your Name", but the music on this is more like a lounge act than anything else. The vocals are more varied than on most of the tracks, but with very little variation in the guitar lines, it does drag out a little, especially with a running time of more than four minutes once more. Thankfully at this point the album is over and I'm not at all sad to reach the end. Admittedly, when you go into an album (or, indeed, anything) with certain expectations, as I did here, the chance of disappointment is always increased. Whos Bad!!!!! Michael Jacksons Number Ones.

...I like Sandra Bullock, I don't think I've made any secret of that fact in previous movie reviews. The thing is, I'm still waiting for a director to come along who might actually show a little bit of confidence in her abilities to both charm an audience and play the tough, serious roles at the same time. Her big break in Speed helped revolutionise the female character in action movies, taking them out of the 'ditzy' love interest stereotype and actually placing them alongside the male actor as co-star. The number 23 (DVD), bet it gets you!

...I asked Ciao to feature this DVD as a new product as I watched it the other night and was blown away by it. As a DVD it would not be very different to a video in that there were no particular extras or features other than the usual 'scene selection' options, there were no interviews, behind the scenes stuff or anything like that. Okay, Jim Carrey, I am so used to seeing him make funny faces or act the fool, this was the first eye opener, the guy can act, boy can he act. ...Starring Jim Carrey. That's always a bad idea. He can't play serious, he's far too annoying. Every scene he's trying to be intense you just can't take him seriously one iota. He is an animal control officer who is bitten by a dog. His wife gives him a book for his birthday which has heavy symbolism of numerology based around the number 23. He starts to find patterns in the book and in real life around him and thinks the book is about him. We follow his descent into madness and insanity as he reads the book and becomes obsessed with it's symbolism. The pursuit of trying to find the truth behind the book and it's writer lead to the truly awful twists of this film. Carrey was the writer, the book is entirely factual & he is a murderer.
