Mercedes A140
Advantages: Good Looking, Cheap, Safe, Easy to Drive
Disadvantages: Suspension, Minor Inconveniences
...The A140 is a great car to drive, the clutch is not too heavy, and generally has a laid back feel to it. The steering wheel is quite responsive making three point turns quite a doddle :) Boot space is great, however only when the rear seats are up or taken out, Then you have a really big boot that can fit all but the biggest and longest objects. Have the seats in place however and the boot space just isnt up to scratch.
Its also great for parking, as it has a short bonnet, and what you see out of the back window is literally where your car ends. So you can get into pretty small spaces that would seem impossible for other cars.
The ceiling is high up so it can accomodate the tallest or those with the most extreme hair styles :)
It also provides incredible amounts of leg room for oth the front and back passengers :)

Why an A140
Advantages: Very Universal, great for carrying loads
Disadvantages: Unpredictable traction control, Merc service costs
...traction control starts to be a bit of a handful. Any slip of a wheel and all power is removed, and the car brakes heavily untill order is restored. By this point your either face on with oncoming traffic, of careering towards the nearest ditch. Turn the traction control off, and it will come back on at the least opportune time, sending you towards more traffic.
Get into a carpark and the steering is effortless, which is great, but you cant see where your going due to the long raked A-pillar, and impossible side windows.
Sure it can transport me and all my belongings to university in relative comfort, but really dont buy the car if you enjoy driving. For pottering around it excels, but if you want fun, look elsewhere....

Schizoid Motor from Germany
Advantages: Small but big(!?), Stylish (front view!), Flat floor, Large driver's footwell
Disadvantages: Rear end chatter, Useless traction control, Gutless engine (overweight chassis?)
...This is obviously a vehicle that cannot make up its mind as to what it's supposed to do or be. Is it a car, a very small truck, or an MPV that's been concertina'd in a crash?
Many people have asked why Mercedes built this thing but, as (unexpectedly) many drivers have bought one, something about it must be right .One such driver was my wife who bought a new A140 (against my advice) so it it might help to note her reasons for doing so.
Firstly, it has the obvious high driving position and the adjustable seat and steering column - the latter being a boon for the missus because she's got very long legs. The large footwell also helps in this respect and, for those who wondered, this is the reason that the engine slants away underneath the car (brilliant!). Merc have even given drivers somewhere to rest their clutch foot.
The other...

A tight squeeze
Advantages: Fuel consumption
Disadvantages: Small, no boot space, hard suspension
...I was issued with a Mercedes A140 whilst my Ford Focus 2.0 Estate was being mended after some little vandals tried to steal it ... that's another story... and I'm afraid I wasn't too impressed.
The most impressive feature for me was the keyring where the key flips inside the key ring. Tiny things please tiny minds!
I spent many hours driving this little car up and down motorways and around town. If I was travelling alone this car was fine. It's nice and high so visibility was good, however I live in an area with many speed ramps and the suspension felt so hard.
However when I was travelling as a family, me, husband and 2 children still in car seats, this car was definitely cramped. The boot space is extremely minimal and it struggled with two buggies, baby kit and a week's shopping. There is no way I would take this car...

Is this a wind up . ?
Advantages: No batteries - ever
Disadvantages: None.
...This torch is the same size as most, gives out more light, and yet requires no batteries at all. Actually there is a battery inside, a rechargeable Ni-MH battery pack, which is 3.6Volts, 1000mAh. This is non-removable. You simply wind a crank to charge it up.
The usual question is "It must be a gimmick, does it actually work?" The answer is a resounding YES! It works very well indeed.
The technology is simple, it uses the same system as Trevor Bayliss used on his wind up radio.
Winding for about 30 seconds gives eight minutes of light, which is impressive. As for the winding speed, there is an LED charge level indicator to tell you.
The bulb is a 3.3 Volts, 1565 mA and 140 mA dual filament high-pressure xenon filled ultrabright bulb, (Xenons are used in high quality car headlights) and there are two settings - "ultra bright...

loved my old Ka, smitten with my new A class
Advantages: Spaciousness, visibility, relatively low running costs
Disadvantages: classic version is a little basic for a mercedes, but with cd and aircon added I'm happy
...I bought my A140 long wheel base in December 03 from mercedes benz direct with 20k on the clock (just under 2 years old). Rather more than i had wanted mileage wise, but only 1 previous owner and immaculate with a pretty good price (9k). Service from MB direct was great, but I had to struggle to get extras like mats and extra tax etc.
In six months I have driven approx 8k miles both on motorways and country tracks ( i use it for work) , and apart from wishing I had traded up to an A160 for the motorway driving I am very happy - I imagine having the A140 is keeping the petrol costs down. On mixed driving (town and country) I average about 450 miles for a full tank (£38) - which compares favourably with my old car a Ford Ka.
We all love the roomy interior and the limo like leg space in the back, and I love the driving position...

★ A Classy Star ★
Advantages: Compact, fun to drive, quirky
Disadvantages: Service costs.
...★ Introduction ★
This review is based on my experience of owning and using a Mercedes A Class Classic 140 over the past 5 years. This review may not be lacking a little in terms of technical specs, since I do not really know much more about cars than being able to open the bonnet, girly girl that I am! However, I passed my driving test many moons ago and have had plenty of time behind the wheel. Therefore, this review may be of interest to those considering purchasing a second hand A Class or one of the slightly different new ones which I think start with the A150.

Skip this section if it's of no interest because this is only helpful if you are nosey and would like to see my history in the world of cars! Having learnt to drive in a chocolate coloured Triumph Toledo in the 1980s and having...

A great car let down by the little things
Advantages: Driving position, boot & rear space
Disadvantages: Service costs, steering response, visibility
...I purchased my Merc A140 from Mercedes Direct in August 2004, it was a green one and had 17k on the clock, on an Avantgarde trim. Recently though I've sold it and now feel its appropriate to list the pros and cons of this particular model
Size & Space
For a start, I bought the long-wheel base version, this gave it approximately 20cm extra space, yeah I know doesn't sound like much but compared with the short-wheel base (which i also drove) there is a sense of more space. I'd recommend anyone to go for the long-base one. I easily managed to get 5 adults in the car (including me) numerous times and not one complained of space.
The boot was a good decent sized one and because it was a hatchback there was no trouble putting the shopping or occasional IKEA flatpack in it. The manual reckons all but the drivers seat is removable giving...
