Advantages: Cheap, Reliable, AMD board
Disadvantages: Socket A, so wont work with Intel cpu's

...I bought my ASUS A7V333 for £85 online. It boasted many modern features, a good BIOS, and the ability to add loads of RAM. The ASUS motherboard costs a little less than some other motherboards, mainly because it is a Socked A board. This means that the only processors it can take are AMD Socket A processors like the Athlon 1800 that I have in mine. The board boasts the standard 5 PCI slots for all your Modem and network cards, and has the newest AGP X4 AGP slot, meaning new cards like the nVidia GeForce 4 cards can run to their full capacity. One nice little touch on the A7V333, is that in addition to a top of the range AMD Athlon XP2200+, you could also have 3GB of PC2700 333MHZ RAM. Unfortunately since 256megs of that RAM costs about £60, i work that out to be between £500 and £600 for 3 Gigs. Ive also seen 4 fan power slots...

...I have an Asus A7V333 motherboard and as far as i can tell, i have had no issues with it at all. there are plenty of features, almost too many. it has a few problems, as it still uses old connections, like the AGP 4x slot, which makes it very difficult to upgrade the graphics card now. it also doesnt have sata. other than that, the motherboard is brilliant. it has 5 pci slots which were useful as i had a lot of cards. The other upgrade issue with this motherboard is that is is using an old socket type, Socket A, which makes it difficult to upgrade the processor and to find a better fan. i am also happy with the fact that it is an ATX board, so it has lots of space for upgrades, if you can find them. This motherboard is great value for money and is a budget-board. probably good as a starter motherboard....

Cheap and Cheerful

Advantages: Low cost relaible integrated motherbaord
Disadvantages: DIP Switches and no support for DDR400

...I bought this board about 18 months ago to build a fairly cheap upgrade computer for a friend of mine they are a very basic user and so as most of the required devices are on-board e.g graphics / sound, this was a good choice for the price On opening the box you are presented with the manual, a driver cd-rom, motherboard back plate, Asus Case sticker and the usual HDD and floppy cables. Oh yes did I mention the board too, nicely wrapped in an anti-static bag. I suppose it's at this point that I should list some of the features: 333 MHz FSB 2GB Max Memory VIA KM400 Chipset Socket A - Athlon XP Support up to 2.25 GHz USB 2.0 Integrated Graphics, LAN and Sound. Good performance for a good price

...The Asus A7V333 cost me £80 over the internet. It is a Socket A board, and will take AMD Duron (600 Mhz +) and AMD Athlon XP (XP1500 and beyond). I run an XP 2000 in mine. The board comes with driver software and a few utilities. These mainly consist of monitoring utilities (eg you can monitor temperature, fan speed voltage etc). The board runs on the VIA KT333 chipset. It has 3 slots for DDR RAM. If you use PC2100 RAM, it can take a maximum 3GB. If you use the faster PC2700 RAM, it can only take up to 2GB. Fast enough for your needs

Advantages: Fast, cheap, easy to install.
Disadvantages: Gets very hot.

...The AMD Athlon XP 2000+ actually runs at 1.67 Ghz. It is named the 2000+ because that is the speed of the equivalent Pentium 4 (2.0Ghz) it claims to beat. Mine came in the official package, complete with processor, heatsink with fan, certificate of authenticity and installation instructions. Installation is the same as for any socket processor. Place processor in socket, push down ZIF lever and there it is! Add the heatsink on top - which was very difficult as it was an extremely tight fit and felt as though the motherboard would buckle under the strain. The heatsink has one of those sticky patches underneath to help conduct the heat from the processor. When it was all installed I booted up and the processor and speed were automatically found. AXIA the overclocker

Advantages: Very overclockable, easy to overclock, very cheap compared to Intel Pentuim III
Disadvantages: Geforce 2 cards dont like the VIA chipset on some Athlon Motherboards, runs extremely hot, must have plenty of cooling

..., like a Coolmaster one is recommended and a good stable motherboard like the Asus A7v or the Abit KT7 are your best bets. No matter what board you have, make sure it has temperature sensors to monitor your chip, so you don’t fry it. System cooling is very important, make sure you case has enough fans and the flow of air is worked out. Make sure you don’t have all your fans blowing air in or all out. Have them set so air comes in from a cool part of your case, and out the other side. For example, put a fan at the front of the case blowing air in, and one at the back sucking air out. Make sure you also use the cooling gel also when overclocking, you will prevent frying your processor. A good site in the UK for all things overclockable is www.overclockers.co.uk. Too Hot to handle

Advantages: Fast, reliable(when cooled), cheap

...The AMD Thunderbird series of procesors is not a range to mess with in many respects. They deliver speed, performance, and high reliability. This does however depend heavily on how well you cool the things. I bought an AMD Thunderbird 800 and plonked it in a good motherboard (ASUS A7V). It ran until it tried to boot!!! The system crashed all the time. The problem was the cooling. The processor was getting far too hot and just freezing. A contradiction in terms maybe but the dread for all PC users.... After much messing with the system and many arguements with the retailer the board worked. Lighhtning is a good word to use. The combination of AMDs design and the 133MHz RAM Bus speed made for a very fast PC. The sytstem was identical to my old machine apart from the processor motherboard and RAM.
