Aarhus.

Advantages: relaxed, clean, friendly, scandinavian, shopping
Disadvantages: cold, expensive

...I am english but have moved to Aarhus, where the following info is based on my own observations and people who have come to visit either myself or my expat friends. Aarhus is located on mainland Denmark (Jutland) just under the bit that looks like a nose (yes, denmark looks a bit like a face). Aarhus has an international airport in the same way that Bristol does - it isnt big or clever, and it's located a long way from town. There is, however, a transfer bus that takes you from the airport to the railway station downtown. The bus leaves about 15 minutes after the arrival of all flights, and will usually wait if the flight is delayed. It costs abot 80kr from memory. If you want to organise transport either to or from Copenhagen when you are here, the rail service is dsb (dsb.dk, I think) It costs around 1000kr for a return, but you do...

Our New Favourite Weekend Break

Advantages: Great range of museums
Disadvantages: beer is more expensive than UK

...We went to Aarhus in June to meet some friends and it was great. The city itself has plenty of shops and cafes along with bars and restaurants. The setup for tourists is much better than any place in England of the same size. There are bikes you can rent for the day on a coin system like supermarket trolleys, lots of buses and passes to make entrance to the attractions cheaper/free. The museums are excellent. The Moesgard just out of town has the 2000 year old Bogman which was amazing and quite interesting with the scientific side of the exhibition. There is also a Viking village there worth a look. The bars were more expensive than the Uk but that is Denmark generally. It didnt stop the other half buying a round (and Yorkshiremen aren't known for their generosity!) We found it very dark at night but didnt feel at any danger...

Little big town

Advantages:
Disadvantages:

...Aarhus is the second biggest city in Denmark, and well worth a visit. Ryanair fly from Stansted to Aarhus airport (28 miles away and 50 kroner with the airport bus)and at times a return fare is only £ 29.00 The city has a very relaxed atmosphere with plenty of bars, restaurants and clubs. Hotels are a little pricey, but one of the best must be the Radison SAS at the International Conrgess Centre next tho the beautifull Concert Hall and opposite the Town Hall designed by Arne Jacobsen. The centre of town is pedestrianised and it is possible to walk to most areas, but all shops are closed from noon Saturday to Monday Morning, and many restaurants also on Sundays....

Ryanair

Advantages: Cheap
Disadvantages: Gets you from A to B, and not much else.

...I'll be honest, i dont like Ryanair and would rather pay a little bit extra to avoid flying with them. However, i recently flew with them to Aarhus in Denmark. As far as i know, Ryanair are the only airline flying from London to Aarhus so i didnt have much option. The flight itself was cheap, about £50 return (including taxes and the fee for using my debit card). I checked the price a couple of weeks later and was amazed to find it had dropped to £25. Oh well! Both flights were unspectular, however there was a delay on the return flight for over an hour. Apparently the plane had struck a bird on its way over and required repair work. To be fair, you could see the mechanics working away at the plane and i should probably be grateful that Ryanair do not cut corners when it comes to safety. But overall, i couldnt complain. It got me...

Review of Ryanair - RYR

Standard

Advantages: Central location, free wireless access, clean and tidy
Disadvantages: Showing its age a bit!

...Returning to Aarhus, there was no chance I was ever going to check back into the Hotel Mercur (see my review from April 2008 to read just why you should steer well clear) so I had to get searching for somewhere else. Denmark's second city seems to suffer from a lack of hotel accommodation and even when booking well in advance, the choice is somewhat restricted, especially if you're travelling on a budget that doesn't allow you to spend more than 130EUR per night. In most countries, that wouldn't be a problem but Denmark is a very expensive place to visit and it can be a bit of a struggle to find rooms under this price limit. The only hotel I could find with rooms available at the price required was the Best Western Ritz - the name sounds great but a colleague of mine had stayed here a couple of years ago and didn't give it a glowing...

Don't forget your nailbrush

Advantages: Very cheap, offers many European destinations - including to small airports
Disadvantages: My flight was rather rushed

...Bizarre title don't you think?! I will go on to explain! Anyway I won't bother you with the history and the ethics behind Ryanair (see cujimmy's excellent opinion for a run down). I have only used this airline once and this opinion details my experience. I needed a relatively inexpensive flight to Aarhus in Denmark, on the cheap because my research budget was paying (and anyone who works in education will know how tight things are!). Booking ------- I tried desperately many times, over the course of several days to use their online booking service. I entered all the information required, including my credit card details etc. but it continually came up that their server was busy and would I try again later. This was a little frustrating as each time, I had to enter the information again. Anyway, this went on for several days...

There is more to Denmark than Copenhagen

Advantages: lovely countryside, nice people
Disadvantages: quite expensive

..., sit by the fire or use the house-own sauna - that's my perfect holiday. As I am not sure whether this kind of holiday will appeal to you, too, let me get to the point. Copenhagen - yes, it's nice. It's got some nice tourist attractions and it's "buzzing" in the summer. BUT ... *Jutland* Or Jylland, as the Danes call it, is the Danish mainland. It is much quieter, calmer, more relaxed. There are no "big" towns, all the towns Danes'd call big like Aarhus, Aalborg, Odense or Esbjerg are hardly big by British or German standards. They are, however, still nice and worth seeing. RIBE for instance, in the Southwest of Jutland, has its own night-guard as in the Old Days, who walks around the picturesque town centre shouting out the hours. LEGOLAND near Billung is something you may have heard of - expensive, but...

Car Hire and cycling in Denmark

Advantages: Clear, well maintained roads
Disadvantages: dangerous unless you read this, expensive

...the downside of the danish penchant for cycles. The flipside is that both Copenhagen and Aarhus (2 biggest cities) have free bicyles, called citibikes. These work like shopping trollies - you put a coin into a slot, squeak around with it for a while, and then find a rack where you can connect it up to a chain again and get your money back. If you can find one, they are a great way to get around town....

If you like boot sales read on .......

Advantages: Gigantic Indoor Market
Disadvantages: It's only on twice a year

...from abroad - you can fly with Maersk Air to Billund, or Ryanair to either Esbjerg or Aarhus, and then get an airport bus or what they call Limousine service to Herning. So how did it start? My uncle tells me it started with some guys with Harley Davidsons getting together to swap parts etc. Then some brought their wives who thought they'd bring a few bits and pieces they could sell, and it sort of spiralled to what it's become today. Cost of entry - it costs DKK60 (a little over £5) or you can pay in other currencies - EUR, NOK and SEK. So the next market is 15th March 2003 and it's open from 8am to 4pm. The one after that will be in November 2003 on a date yet to be announced (it's only held twice a year). Enjoy!...

MOOSES GUIDE TO DENMARK

Advantages: Not as expensive as expected, friendly people, easy to get around, great beer!
Disadvantages: More expensive than the UK, gets ignored when thinking about a short break

...In another of my travel guides I had to write an opinion about this wonderful (but small!) country. I would never have even considered taking a trip to Denmark had it not been for a conference I was required to attend for work. I had heard it was expensive and the weather was very similar to that of the UK...so really no great appeal to a twenty something female - how wrong was I! This opinion is not meant to be a complete run down of Denmark, more of an account of the areas that I visited in the week I was there. Denmark - General ----------------- Believe it or not, Denmark is made up of 450 islands, most quite tiny and uninhabited. It is divided up into 3 regions; Sjaelland, Fyn and the peninsula of Jylland. The two cities I stayed in; Aalborg and Aarhus were situated to the west of Jylland so this is where I will...
