Abbey House Barrow - Great, but pricey
Advantages: Perfect service, the whole day went as smoothly as possible
Disadvantages: Too expensive for us common folk
...The Abbey House Hotel is Barrow's only 5 star hotel. I am writing this review after attending a function there, so the review is about this aspect of the hotel services rather than staying in the hotel overnight. Although I shall include a little information on the rooms for your information.
The Abbey House Hotel is set in 14 acres of woodland just on the outskirts of Barrow in Furness, in South Cumbria. It's is a sandstone building, first constructed in the early 1900's, and in its time is has been a mansion for Commander Craven and a rest home for the elderly, before becoming a hotel. There is a beautiful walk from the hotel to Furness Abbey itself.
When you first turn into the drive of the Abbey House you'll see that the building retains most of its original features, the new Duddon Suite, has been built in such a way that...

Coome Abbey Hotel,
Advantages: Beautiful rooms
Disadvantages: None
...I had the wonderful plesure of staying at the Coombe Abbey hotel during a business trip 3 years ago, I was tasked with manning a stand for my employer at a conference at the University of Warwick just outside Coventry and had to stay over night for a few days.
I discovered that my manager had booked this hotel the week before the trip and was a little surprised that he hadnt booked anything closer or more convenient, at the time I was very annoyed as it dawned on me I would have to rely on taxis to get me around during the 3 days I was away for (I dont drive - yet)
The second my taxi pulled up to the gates outside the estate and made its way down the long drive to the hotel I instantly cheered up and realised why my boss had made the booking, this place was stunning and not unlike a small stately home. I later learned from the staff...

Coombe Abbey.. so much more than a hotel
Advantages: Great rooms, great food
Disadvantages: None
...There is so much more to Coombe Abbey than simply just being a wondeful hotel.
I have visited 'The Coombe' on a couple of occasions now, 2 weddings, 1 Christmas party and on many Sunday afternoon, just simply strolling through the picteresque grounds.
A long drive way takes you up to Coombe Abbey and on eather side as you drive up the very impressive driveway you have lovely greenery and trees.
There is a car park on the right hand side (don't park here if you are resident at the hotel keep going a little further!) where people can park if they have just come to stroll round the grounds or pop into the Visitors Centre, Discovery Centre, History Room or the Heron Table Restaurant .I personally haven't visited any of these yet, but will update this review if I ever do!
I noticed on my last visit because the sun was shinning that...

Alton House Hotel
Advantages: Posh hotel, it looks nice, but...
Disadvantages: The staff
...I went to stay here in 2006, I think. For my sisters wedding. It was a nice hotel, the architecture inside I knew wasn't real, but it was meant to look posh. Which it did, but only in one room... the reception. So, I stayed here for two days and one night. I didn't sleep on a proper bed, because the room was full in which I was sleeping in (Since its a wedding and all). So in the corner of the room, I had to sleep on a horrible, tiny, lumpy bed. Which can be folded again into a bag. Of course, I can't blame the hotel for the poor bed, because this was my own fault. I'm sure that if there weren't so many people I could of slept on the double bed, which is better.
So, in the early days, considering to be the 1800's - Alton House Hotel used to be a house. Not a hotel. Rich people used to live in this house. It was only in the 1940's that...

Abbey Hotel, Dublin
Advantages: Central, Clean
Disadvantages: Basic Facilities
...I stayed in this lovely little hotel in Febuary of this year (2006). Arriving from Dublin Int. Airport, I found it very easy to find from the bus stop on O'Connel Street (only 5 min walk from 'The Spire' / centre).
Check in is not till early afternoon, so if arriving in the morning, make sure you have something to do/planned for the time between arrivial and check in.
The rooms are small, but comfortable and cean. My room consisted of two beds, a televsion with 15+ channels, numerous plug sockets, facilities for making a hot drink, bed side table with lamp, spaceous closet. The en-suit bathroom had a bath with mounted wall shower and curtain, large sink and toilet. Towels were provided and changed on request.
I paid for breakfast in the morning, which was served between 7-10am. The options were a cereal and yoghurt combination...

Hillthwaite House Hotel - a Haven!
Advantages: Value for money, service, restaurant
Disadvantages: Drive is on a very steep hill!
...I've just got back from a long weekend in the Lake District. You might question the wisdom of going to the Lakes for a weekend of watersports and outdoor activities in wintry March, and you'd be right to do so! However, the gale force winds, hail and snow were made bearable by the excellent Hillthwaite House Hotel where we were staying. The hotel was an absolute haven!
Basics
The hotel is a family run business and has about thirty rooms. We were staying on a special weekend offer and paid £185 each for three nights, including bed, breakfast and dinner. The hotel is in Windermere and is about a fifteen minute drive from the M6. It has a swimming pool, sauna and steam room.
Getting There
The hotel had sent a brochure after I booked on the phone and the brochure had a map on the back so I wasn't expecting any...

Lochside House Hotel, Ayrshire, Scotland
Advantages: perfect service, helpful staff, lovely food and rooms
Disadvantages: can be somewhat expensive but you will get great service
...Lochside House Hotel
Located in the western Ayrshire, ¾ distance on A76 from Cumnock to New Cumnock lies the family hotel Lochside. As the name says, it's in the vicinity of two lakes, one of them Loch of the Lowes.
This hotel is owned by the Kyle family, who have purchased the property almost 10 years ago when it was in the state of a more or less ruined old farmhouse and they have advanced and refusbished it into a 3-star hotel which has to offer much more than just bed and breakfast.
I have worked in this hotel but it wouldn't be fair to tell you the Kyles' knowhow, now would it? I always thought it must be a pleasure to stay at Lochside as the service as well as staff was always brilliant, rooms well furnished and properly cleaned, menu vast and lots to choose from, also I've seen many guests coming back and a number...

abbey fantstic
Advantages: great service provider
Disadvantages: none
...abbey house insurance, they offer buildings and contents insurance, i have £280,000 of buildings insurance and £100,000 of contents insurance with them which is an old for new policy and has accidental damage cover included on most household items, for this i pay a year as 10 monthly direct debits, i pay by direct debit as they dont charge you any extra for this like other companys do so the money may as well sit in my account earning me interest as in theres. I have had to put in two contents clains with them which they paid out on both times with no problems unlike another company i could mention.
Abbey also offer life insurance which is provided by phoenix life but i dont actually know anything else about this service.
They used to offer car insurance which i used to have but since they sold this part of the buisiness to another...

Villa country House Hotel
Advantages: Friendly staff, clean
Disadvantages: Pricey, can have a few problems
...My partner, daughter and I stayed at this hotel a couple of times when we go and visit the family up there.
From the outside the hotel looked beautiful and clean and looked really big, as soon as i stepped in the doors i was weary but the staff are all nice and always had a smile on their faces.
The hotel could do with a bit of a lift inside, the rooms wasn't as big as expected from the outside but was well furnished with all your little pieces ( trouser press, tea/coffee etc)
The restaurant was nice with all your traditional food, the waiters and waitresses all know what they are doing and don't mess around, there was one complaint on the next table about a steak wasn't cooked right and the waiter offered to change it straight away, The waiter then came back out and said the steak was all from the same bit lot and it will...

The Garden House WAS a Good Hotel
Advantages: This was a very good hotel in it's day
Disadvantages: Burnt down in 1999
...Review of The Garden House Hotel, Folkestone, Kent, England
You will note that my title for this review states that the Garden House Hotel WAS a good hotel.
So why is the word WAS in capitals?
Well, Ciao is a little out dated as this hotel actually burnt down in 1999!
The Hotel
I was born and brought up in Folkestone, Kent and remember this hotel as one of the grand old Victorian buildings that used to dominate my home town before the property developers moved in and turned us into a concrete jungle. Folkestone is a seaside town on the South East coast of England. It is around 70 miles from London and around 16 miles from the city of Canterbury. The cross Channel port of Dover is approximately 7 miles along the coast. Folkestone was a very popular holiday destination from the time of Queen Victoria.
