Beauchief Abbey, Sheffield
Review of Beauchief Abbey, Sheffield by
micksheff
Advantages: Fantastic Location, Free To Visit
Disadvantages: Mainly Ruins
...have seen many times.
Access to the ruins of the Abbey are completely free to visit and there are placards that describe the various areas of the remains. Some of these have Artist impressions of what the Abbey would have looked like in its hey day.
If you are in the area and get a chance to visit Beauchief Abbey then the address is as below:
Beauchief Abbey
Beauchief Abbey Lane
Beauchief
Sheffield
S8 0EL
Tel: 0114 221 1900
It is possible to park on Beauchief Abbey Road and the ruins of the Abbey can be clearly seen from the road. The land on which the Abbey was built is very flat so it is accessible by wheelchair users.
Thank you for reading....

Ah! rest awhile and contemplate the scene.
Review of Tintern Abbey by
steerpyke
Advantages: a beautiful location, cheap and educational
Disadvantages: none
...and his more famous colleague, William Wordsworth, to write such emotive descriptions about it.
The Abbey and the village of Tintern that it stands in are easily arrived at by car. Being situated just off of the A466 about four miles north of the town of Chepstow, Monmouthshire means that it is not far from the M4 making an easy connection with Britain's motorway system and thus making the journey easily undertaken from almost anywhere in the country. Even the approach to the location is wonderful, a taste of the delights to come. The road winds down the wooded hillside as it drops away to the flood plain of the River Wye and suddenly in front of you is a lovely village that would look at home on the lid of a chocolate box and nestled on the edge are the statuesque remains of the Abbey.
If you are not in the habit of visiting ruins...

Whitby Abbey
Review of Whitby Abbey, North Yorkshire by
micksheff
Advantages: Good views. lots of history
Disadvantages: Admission charges
...couple trying to push a pushchair up there but it quite a struggle. For those that are unable to climb these steps there is an alternative route from a road at the top which is well sign-posted at if you choose this option it is also possible to park nearby, although this is on a pay and display basis. If you are able to climb the steps then this is certainly the recommended route as the effort is rewarded with the most amazing views.
If you are planning a visit to Whitby Abbey it is open at the following times:
1st April to 1st November - daily from 10am until 6pm (or dusk if earlier in October)
2nd November to 31st March - daily from 10am until 4pm.
Current admission charges are as below:
Adults - £1.70 (2.5 Euros)
Concessions - £1.30 (2 Euros)
Children - 90p (1.5 Euros)

A tranquil place of beauty -Great for a Picnic
Review of Roche Abbey, South Yorkshire by
traceychurchill76
Advantages: Lovely setting for a picnic
Disadvantages: Not a full day out
...first impressions of this place.
Once you arrive there is a small parking area just of the main road with a short walk (about 10mins stroll) down a cobbled path to the valley floor where the Abbey is actually situated.
Roche Abbey is pretty secluded in it's valley with natural barriers made up of Limestone cliffs. This place is also free of charge so if you're in the area anyway you've got nothing to loose by just dropping in.
My favourite view is from the A634 when approaching the Abbey from Oldcoates direction. The Abbey is of to the left as you travel along the road, you will travel round the last bend and be greeted with a beautiful view, it really is an impressive vision of an ancient time. On a foggy winters morning it is almost spooky staring down into the valley. (Don't forget to keep your eyes on the road as well though!) Don...

A sense of calm
Review of Whitby Abbey, North Yorkshire by
danielalong
Advantages: Lovely day out
Disadvantages: Lots of steps
...A BIT OF HISTORY…
The abbey stands high on a cliff and can be clearly seen when standing in the centre of Whitby, so even first time visitors like ourselves find it easy to locate.
The first abbey was built in AD 657 by St Hilda and was destroyed in a Viking invasion in AD867. It was rebuilt in the late 1070s and the building of the present church began in 1220. Because of its location on the top of a cliff, it was not destroyed during the dissolution in Henry 8th's time but was (and still is ) used as a navigation marker.
We went to the abbey from the Whitby harbour area, where the abbey can be reached by climbing the 199 'abbey steps' (or Caedmon's Trod). Foa anyone not feeling up to this, the abbey can be reached via a well-signposted road leads from the town outskirts to the cliff-top abbey. The walk up the steps is quite...

Traditional Irish Pub
Review of Flanagan´s Apple by
neilmcc
Advantages: Traditional & cheap
Disadvantages: Loud & busy
...If you like traditional Irish pubs with good Irish music and plenty of Guinness and Beamish, this is the pub for you.
Definitely 'Spit and sawdust' but much better than any of the Irish themes pubs such as 'Molly O'Gradys'.
There is a pool table, darts and plenty of Fruit machines on offer.
The pub is quite large and there is plenty of indoor seating.
It is in the middle of the Beatle area of the City with plenty of Beatle themed pubs such as 'Rubber Soul', Abbey Road and Lennons....

Not their best.
Review of Abbey Road - Beatles (The) by
daseaford
Advantages: Classic album.
Disadvantages: Not their best.
...Abbey Road is not the Beatles that we came to love and admire in the early 60’s. I think the band tried to change their image and music too much with this album and ended up with a mixed bag of tracks that do not flow together particularly well.
The two tracks Octopus’s Garden and Maxwell’s Silver Hammer have the feel of some of the music from the time of Yellow Submarine, but they don’t seem to convey the same enthusiasm that most of the music from that period had.
From about half way through the second side, some of the old Beatles style does start to emerge, particularly in Mean Mr Mustard and Polythene Pam, but the magic isn’t quite there.
The one track that should never have been recorded is I Want You. In my opinion this was added just to fill in space, as I can’t believe that anyone at that time really wanted this track...

Abbey Park, Leicester
Review of Leicester in General by
engna
Advantages: Beautiful scenery
Disadvantages: dirty toilets
...Abbey Park is a very beautiful place to visit in Leicester where you can relax from work or study and enjoy yourself and family.
It was built on 60 acres of former marshy meadows and pasture.
There are several tributaries of the river Soar run into it where swan birds make it very pleasant to be there and feed them.
It was designed by Barron & Sons of Derby, and opened by the Prince of Wales, the future King, Edward VII in 1882.
On either side of the wrought iron gates stand the two Tudor style lodges that were designed by James Tait in 1881. The lodge on the left, as viewed from Abbey Park Road, is the more ornate of the two.
It is decorated with ornamental crests representing the borough arms. The right-hand building carries a canopied structure that houses the bell that was once rung prior to park closing time. There is another...

Come together
Review of 1 - Beatles (The) by
katie169
Advantages: Upbeat, mellow and sad songs all in one great CD
Disadvantages: None!
...The Beatles have always been the band everyone has been mad about. When it used to be played on radios, admit it, didn't you sing along? I've been a fan for a few years now and was delighted when my uncle gave me this as a birthday present. I think it must have cost at the least £15 which is brilliant for 27 rocking tunes!
This is the best songs produced by The Beatles all on this CD.
On the CD is says exactly the same like on the front. The small manuscript/guide has an artistic picture of each individual Beatle.
On the inside are all the pictures of all the records they sold.
Below is all the info you probably need that I found on a website but I have added some of my own points to it too!
Track 1: Love Me Do
This song was recorded on September 11, 1962 at EMI Studios, Abbey Road, London. It was released...

Gothic ruins are well worth a visit!
Review of Whitby Abbey, North Yorkshire by
SusanLesley
Advantages: Great ruins, wonderful views
Disadvantages: A steep climb if you choose to go that way
...Whitby is a picturesque little town on the north east coast of Yorkshire. The main industry of Whitby is fishing as it has been for many years and you can still watch the boast coming in and landing the catches if you're up early enough!
It is set at the mouth of the River Esk and the town is split with shops, pubs and houses rising steeply on either side of the river, which is spanned by a swing bridge to allow ships to pass upstream.
On the east cliff of Whitby stands the ruins of Whitby Abbey which is reached by climbing 199 steps so it's not for the faint hearted, although to be fair you can also get to it by road which cuts out the steps. You might think I'm mad but for me walking up the steps was part of the attraction. There is also a slope at the side of the steps but, trust me, you wouldn't want to try and push a wheelchair...
