Pressure,pressure,blood pressure.

Advantages: Helps keep a check on your health.
Disadvantages: Price maybe, could get a little paranoid about health.

...I thought I would have a change from all the heavy stuff I have been writing about lately, and write about a little machine I bought about six months ago. The Omron MX3. It is a blood pressure monitor. All my life my blood pressure has been wildly erratic. The highest measured blood pressure I recorded was 180/100. High yes, but I had just spent 12 minutes on a treadmill having a heart test. Anyway it was back to 140/80 within 5 minutes. They told me that was great. Anyway when I go to the doctors it varies between 157/95 being the highest and 117/76 being the lowest. Generally though it is about 140/80-85 I have researched this a little and I have realised that your blood pressure can vary and change very rapidly. I have confirmed this by visits to the doctor and a medical friend of mine who uses a different machine to the one...

Review of Omron RX Blood Pressure Monitor

Reduce your high blood pressure without drugs

Advantages: Easy to follow guidance with good explanations
Disadvantages: You do have to put the effort in when you have read it

...Around a quarter of all adults will develop high blood pressure in their lifetime. In the UK doctors are taking this problem seriously and more and more people are being diagnosed because of better monitoring (and because the government in incentivising doctors to look for it.) Sadly I am one of the people with blood pressure on the high side but I am trying to find a way to control it without going on to medication for the rest of my life. I have tried a few 'snake oil' remedies which didn't work, and I am still keen to find something which will help which is why I ordered this book from Amazon recently as if there is a 'Natural Way' to control blood pressure I want to know what it is. In his introduction James Scala says that about 85% of all high blood pressure can be controlled by diet, food and lifestyle. He is also points...

High Blood Pressure

Advantages: see op
Disadvantages: see op

...High Blood Pressure. Blood pressure is one of the main concerns that affects out society. So why is there such concern? Why are so many are there so many strokes that may arise form ignored high blood pressure? Why does it cause so many deaths? To help you to appreciate what is Blood Pressure, we need to know why this is very important knowledge to know. Blood pressure is the physical influence that pushes the blood against the walls of the arteries. Blood is needed to carry its supply from the heart to all of the body’s tissue and organs. Every time this happens, particularly when you are resting it pumps out its blood to the arteries at a rate about 60-70 times a minute. When your doctor measures the heart, using a blood pressure it is measured with an instrument called a sphygmomanometer...

Blood Pressure

Advantages: See op
Disadvantages: Possible heart attack victim!

...I thought blood pressure problems happened to other people, not me! When I started having cluster headaches (readers may like to read my opinions) the doctor said I had a high BP reading but then it did go down to normal. Blood pressure is the pressure inside your arteries - little tubes that carry blood from the heart to the rest of the body. Do not mistake these tubes for veins - veins are the blue tubes that you can see underneath your skin. You can feel your artery by putting your fingertips on your pulse at your wrist. If you can feel it beating then that means the artery is beating. Apparently blood pressure was not diagnosed until the early 1900's and the people most likely affected are those of us who live in the western world. Blood pressure is using monitored by wrapping an inflatable band round your upper arm...

Review of Member Advice on High Blood Pressure

How Pressured Are You?

Advantages: none really unless you have low pressure
Disadvantages: lots if you have high pressure

...Blood pressure is a measure of how forcefully your blood is pressing against your artery walls with each heartbeat. Blood pressure is gauged by two numbers such as 120//80 which is spoken as one twenty over eighty. The first number is called systolic pressure and the second number if diastolic pressure. The systolic pressure is the one in the arteries when they are filled with blood and your heart is beating and the diastolic pressure is the one when your heart is resting between beats. In the UK it is considered that your blood pressure is fairly normal if your top reading is between 110-140 and bottom reading is 70-90, although 120/80 is about the most average you can get and apparently this is the roughly the range to aim for. HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE In general if you have high blood pressure you should be aware...

High Blood Pressure and Grapefruit

Advantages: Once the Doctor knows about it, you get lots of other checkups
Disadvantages: Taking lots of tablets and getting dizzy

...It may a little known fact but grapefruit and some beta-blockers do not mix well. I had been taking Atenelol but started getting some side effects, which made me visit the Doctor. He slowly reduced the Atenelol until I was off it all together. I went on holiday and my friend who I was staying with, assuming I was still on medication saw me drinking grapefruit juice and cautioned me against drinking it as it has detrimental effect on some beta-blockers. I told her I was off the beta-blockers and thought no more of it. On my return I had to go for a BP check. My blood pressure was high and I was told to make a further appointment later in the week. Anyway to cut a long story short my blood pressure continued to be high so the Doctor decided to switch me to calcium beta-blockers ' nifedipine'. To my amazement I was told by...

...available separately at £2.99 each.It comes with batteries supplid How to take a blood pressure correctly: The first time you take your blood pressure you should check both arms. Blood pressure frequently varies .Once you have checked both you identify which gives they highest ?high? reading is the one you use in future. Factors preceding a Blood pressure check; ? Measure at least one hour after eating, smoking, drinking coffee or alcohol. ? Avoid checking immediately after bathing ? Sit down and relax for 10 minutes before taking the measurement and remain relaxed through the procedure. It is best to sit at a table so the cuff will be at the same height as the heart, this gives a more accurate reading ? Don?t move or talk while taking a measurement as this will affect the reading ? Review of LLoyds Pharmacy Blood Pressure Monitor

Under Pressure

Advantages: Quick testing
Disadvantages: cost maybe

...). Success- I was a victim of white coat syndrome! Overall this meter/monitor is a great little machine that gives accurate readings in a short while. If you have any suspicions about hypertension or worries then next to a visit to your doctor this little machine will prove extremely helpful (providing you have a spare £80 that is). However, my advice is to get your BP checked by someone medical, before thinking about buying a monitor in any shape or form. It is small enough to hide away, but not so small as to fit in a handbag or pocket (if you wish to take it anywhere). The leaflet I got with the company recommends that you home test your Pressure twice a day, which-I-admit- I stuck to religiously in the first instance. Now however I am happily off the pills, I take it far less regularly, although still enough to keep the medics...

Review of Omron RX Blood Pressure Monitor

PUMPING PRESSURE

Advantages: none
Disadvantages: lots

...Hypertension, the correct name for high b lood pressure. Hypertension can lead to serious consequences, and it is therefore important that your BP (B lood pressure) is correctly monitored and treated as necessary. Hypertension is simply put when your arteries are narrowed and the b lood is pushed harder through them. Most patients do not know they have hypertension until they go to their doctor for something else and have their B P read as routine. Normal B P’s are around 120/80, which is ideal. However as you get older this increases and the acceptable norm becomes 160/90 (at around 60 years). In ninety per cent of people the cause for their hypertension is unknown, this is called ‘primary or essential’ hypertension. In the rest of the cases there are reasons this is usually called ‘secondary...

Review of Member Advice on High Blood Pressure

A Blood-Curdling Review.

Advantages: You might get fixed
Disadvantages: Most men prefer socks or pants.

...The Lloyd's Pharmacy Blood Pressure Monitor is the most peculiar present I've ever been given for my birthday. I even emailed my sister and told her I thought so. She pointed out that I'm getting older and if it stops me getting a heart attack or having a stroke then it was a good present. I think she's right and I didn't mean to be ungrateful. Of course it's better to know. It's just that I was feeling quite well when she sent it and now that I've taken my blood pressure and looked everything up in the supplied chart I think I might be at death's door. Just kidding! This is actually a great present for me. I tend to veer from dieting and long distance running to lolling about with a bottle of whisky and as much chocolate as I can find. I ended my last committed and effective diet on Christmas Day of 2006 and I'm still showing no...
