Advantages: Location Disadvantages: More of a business Hotel than for lesuire
...I decided to treat my mum and me to a short break to Abu Dhabi last year and choose the Millennium Hotel to stay in. We managed to find a taxi easily enough at Abu Dhabi airport and after a short drive (30mins) we arrived at the hotel. On first impressions I was a little disappointed. I had all these grand images in my head, but in reality the hotel seemed pretty standard.
The room itself was quite basic (considering the price we paid), but it was clean and the beds were very comfortable.
The hotel does have a nice swimming pool (although a little on the small side) and area for catching some sun.
Getting around Abu Dhabi was fairly easy, taxi's are always available and very cheap.
One trip I would recommend is the desert safari and evening barbecue. Driving up and down the sand dunes in the deserts was thrilling, I was...
Advantages: Peaceful, lovely pool, helpful staff, nice rooms Disadvantages: Middle of nowhere, food not brilliant.
...I wasn't expecting too much from this hotel, but was pleasantly surprised. My husband was being sent on a few days business trip to Dubai during the school half term, and I decided to tag along at the last minute with our two kids. With only a day to go I didn't expect a great choice of hotels. Sure enough, the only hotels coming up with suitable vacancies were the Kempinski at $850 a night (no thank you!) and this one, at $170 a night. I was a bit confused though as several hotel finder sites put it as Dubai, but the address was Abu Dhabi. Looking on the map we found why, it is nearly exactly haflway between the two emirates. As my husband was working quite nearby and we had a hire car, this was not a problem. If you come from Dubai, it is about 40 minutes drive from the airport (but could be longer if you are unfortunte...
Advantages: Strong and a nice size. Disadvantages: None really
...Many people who fish dislike using the multiplier reel and stick to the fixed spool type ( type with bail arm that you move over the top of the spool). Although the fixed spool type is very easy to use and most probably one of the first reels we all use, the multiplier, once mastered, is a much better reel. The ideal starter is the Abu Garcia 6500. Not only a starter reel but one you will keep for ever. These reels are strong and nice in size without being too big. These reels come in different models but are all very similar. They come with level wind, which loads the line on to the reel in an even way to save you doing it manually. and so the line leaves the reel in an even way to increase distance.
These reels can be used on your beachcaster from the beach or for use on a boat, but not really for wreck fishing.
Spares for these...
Advantages: absolutely breathtaking - far better than the pyramids Disadvantages: expensive
...On a weeks cruise down the Nile we opted for an excursion to Abu Simbel. After paying out loads of cash for the holiday of a lifetime I decided we weren't going to miss out on any excursions. An extra £500 and a wake up call of 5am we had breakfast and caught an internal flight. After climbing off the coach we began the short walk to the temple. There were street vendors on the road down to the temple, selling souvenirs and ornaments, who were probably the most polite vendors that we found in Egypt. There were also a few kiosks selling cold drinks and snacks. Our guide took us on the short cut up over the hill instead of walking around the road. At the top of hill we were greeted by the most impressive manmade sight I have ever seen - the temple was far bigger than you can ever imagine. The whole group that we were with, were speechless...

Review of Abu Simbel (Egypt)
Advantages: Winter sunshine combined with culture and comfort Disadvantages: Terrorist threats can deter some visitors but the Egyptians are security aware
...The Nubians call it 'The Nubian Sea' while the rest of Egypt named it Lake Nasser. Not surprising the Nubians call it that as in order to create the Lake in the 1960s the Nasser government penned up the Nile behind the High Dam and the dammed waters flooded the Nubian Desert area in Upper Egypt to create a 300 mile long inland sea. This meant that forty Nubian villages and towns and forty thousand Nubians had to be re-housed as their homes vanished beneath the rising waters. But it wasn't just the Nubian people who were in danger of being submerged -but many of the ancient Nubian monuments south of Aswan including the most famous and imposing 3000 year old temples and statues of Ramesees 11 at Abu Simbel.
Once the High Dam was built, an amazing feat by Soviet engineers, the Nubian Desert began to slowly fill with Nile waters...

Review of Abu Simbel (Egypt)
Advantages: In the airport, inexpensive, convenenient Disadvantages: Only 40 rooms, no in-room internet
...What to do?
You are travelling via Abu Dhabi, it's midnight, you've arrived to discover that your onward flight is delayed, or cancelled. Or perhaps you're flying from Abu Dhabi, you've checked out of your hotel and come to the airport for your overnight flight, and it is delayed. Or - as in my case - the midnight flight was full, I was hoping to get on at the last minute but no luck, and the next flight was not until ten in the morning.
For whatever reason, you are facing a night at Abu Dhabi airport, the floor looks very hard and the chairs only marginally less so.
It's at a moment like this that you can be relieved to discover the Airport Hotel!
Location
The airport is at least thirty minutes drive from the city, an hour from the Jumeirah area of Dubai, so an airport hotel is preferable to heading into town...
Advantages: Nice rooms, some nice restaurants, friendly, good location Disadvantages: Lobby coffee shop, small pool and gym, expensive internet
...Opened less than three years ago, the Millennium Hotel in Abu Dhabi is one of the newest hotels, in a city which is growing rapidly, boosting its tourist industry and raising its international profile. Unlike Dubai down the road, however, it is trying to keep its traditional character, and to retain a degree of class and exclusivity, and to avoid kitch and tackiness.
This hotel it is part of the Millennium Group, owned by a company from Singapore. A few years ago they bought the UK's Copthorne Hotels and now proudly claim to be the 40th largest hotel chain in the world, according to their website! The hotel is located less than a block from the seafront Corniche, close to central Hamdan Street. It has 325 rooms and they promise a "yes we can" attitude. So how did they do?

...If you're going to Abu Dhabi the chances are that you want to chill out, shop, or both. Either way, the Hilton is well located for both.
OK the hotel is not actually on the beach - but it is just across the road and there is a handy subway that goes almost from the front door of the hotel to the Hiltonia beach club. But more on that later.
Arrival
I had booked an airport pickup and sure enough, I was picked up. As we emerged from customs, there was our name on the board. I identified myself and moments later we were escorted to the door and we, and our bags, were loaded into a Mercedes taxi, no less, and we were on our way. A fine start, we were impressed already.
There are three Hiltons in Abu Dhabi; as well as this one there are also the Bayouneh Hilton and the Hilton Corniche Residence. Make sure you get to the right...
Advantages: Central Location, comfortable Disadvantages: Cramped rooms, broken cots, noisy
...The Crowne Plaza Hotel Abu Dhabi
A few weeks ago I was in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates for a couple of days. Wife and baby came with me. It was only the second time that the little one had been with us in a hotel, so we wondered how he would take to it!
LOCATION
The hotel is very central in Abu Dhabi. Coming into the city from the airport it is about a 25 minute drive; coming in on the main road, once you're in the city centre turn right onto Hamdan Street from the first underpass and it's two blocks down on the right hand side.
The street is full of shop, restaurants, cafes and offices. Within five minutes walk there is a Burger King, Starbucks and more. A couple of large malls are within a five minute drive.
ARRIVAL
There is an entrance facing onto Hamdan Street but the main entrance is...
Advantages: Apartment independence with Hilton hotel comfort Disadvantages: Cheap soap dispenser, some slow service
...When people think of the United Arab Emirates, most people think of Dubai. However, Dubai is just one of seven emirates that make up the UAE. It is the one that set the standard for growth in the region, but for some people it is increasingly becoming too much. One Palm Island was inspirational, but with a third one now under construction there are many who fear the environmental impact on Jumeirah Beach. The construction frenzy extends down the coast to several new, themed cities, to new residential areas, marinas, the World's tallest building, the World's largest shopping mall, and many ask where it will end. Already there is a price being paid, in severe traffic congestion, and who knows about the other pressures on the infrastructure.
An hour away lies Abu Dhabi, the largest of the seven Emirates and the capital city. Often...
