...It sometimes surprises those who know little of the workings of academia that the lecturers entrusted to teach students receive little, if any, formal pedagogical training. What ? on reflection ? seems almost equally surprising is that most academics, for all their focus on writing and publishing research, get very little training in writing either. Most learn simply by imitating those they read...

..., but it's a big building with cellars and strong walls for keeping people out (or in?) and strange mediaeval customs, and fancy dress, so there's not a lot of difference. Then there's the University proper: the academics. They know nothing about the vats where the candles are artistically made and melted. They know nothing about the kitchens so long as they function and provide 5 to 8 good meals...
