Loco for Acapulco
Advantages: the weather, the people, the area, virtually everything in fact
Disadvantages: the beach sellers, the cockroaches, the long flight time from the UK, and a small earthquake.
...Firstly my general rule of thumb about going on holiday is, when choosing a destination it must be somewhere I have not been before, but Acapulco is somewhere I would return to in a heartbeat.
It has to be one of the best holidays I have had in a long time.
Why? I hear you ask.
We booked about 6 weeks before we went so not exactly last minute, but not ages in advance and paid around £750 each for all inclusive 4 star hotel for two weeks. All the hotels are arranged around the bay along a long road called La Costera, and many are actually on the beach.
The hotel was fabulous, on the beach and the staff were great, you didnt even have to get out of your sunlounger to go to the bar, the waiters came down on to the beach and delivered your drinks to you dripping with ice. Well you need to keep cool in 47C heat.
Before this...

The City By The (Other) Bay
Advantages: Closest beach to Mexico City, donde vivo ahora
Disadvantages: It rains a lot this time of year
...So, in a nutshell, Mexico and Spain fought a war of Independence, and 198 years later, I moved to Mexico. Woo! And, for my first Mexican Independence day I decided to leave the big city behind and head to the beach. Acapulco is the nearest beach to Mexico City, so off we went.
~~~ Getting There ~~~
Some people would fly to Acapulco. It takes 45 mins from here, and is quite a civilised way to travel. Not us. We took the Autopista del Sol (Highway to the Sun) which should take 4 - 5 hours, but of course took us longer (think 6.5 hours) because of the long-weekend traffic. Mexico doesn't really do trains, but the busses are as comfy as busses can be. Included in our 700 pesos (£35) return trip, we got a drink and a snack (no veggie sandwich, and Japanese peanuts...I do not know what made them Japanese) and 3 films each way. Yes, films...
Good Enough For A Short Sharp Summer Stay
Advantages: Great location, kitchenette, 4 swimming pools, free safety deposit box, unbeatable price
Disadvantages: Not too many facilities, a basic hotel really, slow lifts
...I sometimes think that if you believed Trip Advisor you would never stay in any hotel, anywhere in the world. This hotel did not have good reviews, but we stayed there anyway, and it was, as they say, Not Too Bad. This week was Mexican Independence Day (celebrated on 16th Sept...incidentally the day the war of independence commenced, not the day it ended) and so we had a long weekend - 5 days for me, since I never work Fridays anyway. We decided to go to Acapulco for 3 nights, and through a combination of restricted budget and late booking, ended up staying here.
~~~ Arrival ~~~
We took a should-be-5-hour-but-holiday-traffic-turned-it-int o-6½-hours bus trip from Mexico City and arrived into Acapulco at about 4pm. There are several different bus terminals depending on your company, but they are all similar. A taxi from...

One of the best!
Advantages: great atmosphere, reasonable prices, quick service
Disadvantages: can get crowded
...I love Acapulco. Its cheap, cheerful, right in the middle of the city on George's St, the food is great, the service usually excellent and they do great pitchers of margueritas!
Acapulco isn't a fancy place, you walk into a busy room, with colourful Mexican-style seating, where the tables are closely packed. But everyone in there looks like they're really enjoying it. Thats what I love about the place. They are extremely busy, but don't try to hurry you along to get their table back. That's not to say the service is slow - no matter how busy it was when I've gone there, I've never been able to make that complain.
Starters start at around EUR5, with mains from about 10 upwards. Theres a decent choice, with both Mexican staples (nachos, burritos, quessidillas) as well as the usual chicken/beef options.
As far as desserts go, their...

buster edwards story starring phil collins
Advantages: some great comedy moments and a fab soundtrack
Disadvantages: none
...this is one of my favourite films ever, i have always loved phil collins as a singer and i thinkhe has a great voice and his acting skills in this film are just as good as his singing skills.
in this film he plays the well known train robber buster edwards and this film tells the story of the events and repercussions of that robbery.
june played by julie walters is his devoted wife who sticks by him thru thick and thin even moving to acapulco when they have to escape england after the robbery, june hates it so much over there that she returns home with their daughter and buster misses her so much that he returns homeknowing that it is only a mtter of time before he gets arrested, which inevitably he does.
there is a star studded cast in this look out phil mcfadden aka phil mitchell of eastenders fame.
the soundtrack that...

absolute bliss!
Advantages: staff, food, pool area
Disadvantages: steps!
...the sea and the jetty off the beach could be seen. In the morning the sunset was visible.
Throughout the hotel was various restaurants. A buffet one which we never got round to trying, an italian which we didnt rate as was expensive but lovely food. One called zizzini which served simple food like pizzas and burgers which was handy if you wanted something quick or late on. My favourite was the mexican acapulco joes which is set down by the beach next to a pool. the staff are unbelievably friendly and the food was gorgeous.
Overall staff were well mannered and tendered to your every need. The staff around the pool found it never too much trouble to bring you anything you asked for and always did it happily and quickly, even if it was a bucket of ice to cool you down. Pool staff brought round icy flannels half way through the day to cool...

Arcadia an expensive dissapointment
Advantages: Very good cabin with balcony
Disadvantages: Poor food
...We joined the Arcadia at Barbados for a cruise taking in the Panama Canal ending up at Acapulco. It was to be the holiday of a lifetime. The cost was high and so were our expectations. Unfortunately P & O and Arcadia in our opinion didn't measure up to those expectations.
On the plus side
The cabin on the A deck with a balcony was very good
Cabin steward excellent
The bars generally were good
Standard of bar service very good
level of service in the Meridian restaurant was excellent
Pool decks were nice as to the Spa
The negative points
Quality of food average to poor. The evening dinner in the Meridian would have some courses that were reasonable but generally P & O like frozen options and packet soups that was obvious.
The Belvedere Court self service cafe was atrocious at lunchtime. One day the cold options...

Whilst on the boat O'Hara and Elsa fall in love. He encounters Bannister's divorce detective, Broome (Ted De Corsia) during a meeting with Elsa in an Acapulco marketplace.

The New Adventures of Old Vallarta
Advantages: Lovely promenade and old town, great weather
Disadvantages: Not many restaurants in the hotel zone
...Choosing to spend Semana Santa, the week before Easter, in Vallarta was not difficult. I've been to Acapulco, and I spent a month near Cancún when I first arrived in Mexico, so Vallarta was the obvious choice for my next beach trip. Located about 90 minutes by air from Mexico City, Vallarta is served by dozens of flights from the capital every day. We flew early Sunday morning and returned the following Sunday afternoon, getting just over a week in the resort.
Vallarta airport is surprisingly nice. It is certainly better than the tiny thing in Veracruz, but then it is an international airport, with tons of flights to the USA and Canada as well as domestically within Mexico. We arrived at the start of a busy holiday week, but it was less than 30 minutes from exiting the plane to getting into a taxi, as baggage reclaim was quick. When...

Advantages: Quite a calm book depite the theme
Disadvantages: I enjoyed it all
...-hole he finally made a friend for life - George Rackley. George was good to him and they ran cons together, making an existence on the expense of others, while never causing anyone any physical harm. But then George died and Blaze was left alone to look after himself.
He finally decided to run the biggest job of his life - one that George had planned before he died. Kidnapping! He could get $2 million and live out his life in Acapulco. But Blaze never counted on enjoying the experience quite the way he did.
I was really pleased to get this for Christmas as I had last received Lisey's Story by Stephen King and just couldn't get into it enough to get past about the first quarter of the book it was so shockingly boring. I love King and therefore leapt into this as soon as I had finished the last book I had been reading.
