For example, I emailed Egg to see if I needed to submit a seperate R85 form for a newly opened second account - I received an email response stating that I did have to do this and that the form would be sent to me (the form arrived 2 days later through the post). The more cautious among my readers will have spotted the potential security problem - if you forget your log in details or someone else manages to discover them and you can't access your account, how can you contact Egg without using the secure email facility? Don't worry: Egg have already thought of this. If you need to amend your password or any log in details, simply call them on 0845 3660047. They will ask you 8 different 'security' questions, to which only you are likely to know the answer - a mixture of personal information...

SMILE CURRENT ACCOUNT: MAGDADH GOES ALL ETHICAL

Advantages: Ethical bank, good interest rates, cheap overdraft, OK site, Post Office OTC service
Disadvantages: Extortionate admin and penalty charges, can't remove overdarft, seems slow

...'s an excellent account if you are usually in credit and ocassionally want to use an overdraft facility. The interest rates are good, site works well, Post Office OTC service is a big plus and the fact that it comes from the Co-operative bank with all its ethical credentials is a definitely a major one. However, if you ride your overdrafts perilously close to the limit, it's an account to avoid: the information on your spending appears on-line fairly late; there is no 'buffer', you will probably get charged, and the charges are huge....

Once opened, it can be assessed on-line and money transferred from account to account with relative speed and ease. One of its best assets is its debit card. If you travel abroad and need to draw out local currency, the card will let you but, you DONT incur any extra charges or fee's. You'll simply get charged the exchange rate for the amount. Well worth just for that reason alone. Their interest rates are reasonable and, with many branches around, its not hard to get access. Morgage rates are quite good with competitive trackers. Having said this, my two major priorities were easily met by the following 'key features' shown on this site: - "24 hour access via the Internet, telephone or cash machines" - "Access to over 26,000 UK cash machines and over 500,000 worldwide with NO FEES from Nationwide" - "All the convenience of a 3-in-1 Visa Debit Card" This information clearly confirmed to me that I could get at my money easily, look at details of the account whenever I chose and get assistance, should I need it, at any time. The 3-in-1 card sounded a bit flash, but on further investigation turned out to me nothing more than a normal debit card. Nationwide flex account

...The Nationwide Flex account is a great account to have if you do a lot of travelling abroad. I opened a Nationwide Flex account with one main thing in mind - ie to get a good exchange rate abroad without incuring any fees for withdrawing cash. The Nationwide Flex account debit card is the only debit card that you can use abroad to withdraw cash from ATM's and to pay for goods without paying a 'charge' for it.. (although it does state that some ATM's make a charge which is outside their control, I have never had any charges incurred.) I have used my card now three times whilst travelling abroad. The exchange rate I have been given has always been excellent - much higher than local currency exchangers, banks and other UK banks.
