The One Account

Advantages: Paying off your mortgage quickly and saving you thousands of pounds
Disadvantages: You need a lot of common sense and future vision to benefit from this account

...I HAVE WROTE AN UPDATE AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE. HOPE YOU ENJOY READING AND PLEASE FEEL FREE TO GET IN TOUCH IF YOU WISH. GARY. The One Account?...where to begin??? Well for a start you need to have a common sense mentality, or this product will simply not work for you. The account works by purchasing your house on your switch card, i.e. you have a massive overdraft; as simple as that. You then pay in your wages and any other sums of money you can get hold of into your account, and hey presto, you simply pay off the debt. Why does this product work for me? Well my scenario is that my I own over half of my property, so I benefit from the lowest rates of interest that they offer. If you are not in this situation then the account is not really for you as better deals can be found. Now for the interesting bit?..can you save...

The Red And The Black - Jerry Harrison

Advantages: the funky pop of Talking Heads combined with some killer tunes
Disadvantages: why isn't this album better known?

...If you love mid period Talking Heads then you'll love this 1981 solo album from Heads keyboard player Jerry Harrison. Keeping the multilayered polyrhythms of Remain In Light and adding an outright funky sheen Jerry created the best Talking Heads album that the band never made. Assisted by keyboard wizard Bernie Worrell, guitarist Adrian Belew and singer Nona Hendryx (all of whom had graced the expanded touring line up of the Heads during 1980) Jerry's style of music is pure funky pop. The album was originally going to be broadly instrumental with Hendryx and Dolette Macdonald adding wordless singing. But Jerry was persuaded by the others that he could sing so the tunes became songs. Jerry's lyrics are curious, often offering gentle advice about life the universe and everything in oddly simplistic verses. But the tunes are mighty...

Nationwide: Flex Account

Advantages: Good rates and great for internet usage. Excellent card when abroad.
Disadvantages: Slow to respond to internal e-mails.

...I have been with nationwide for many years and they have certainly improved. They have a wide range of accounts but best of all must be their Flex account. Once opened, it can be assessed on-line and money transferred from account to account with relative speed and ease. One of its best assets is its debit card. If you travel abroad and need to draw out local currency, the card will let you but, you DONT incur any extra charges or fee's. You'll simply get charged the exchange rate for the amount. Well worth just for that reason alone. Their interest rates are reasonable and, with many branches around, its not hard to get access. Morgage rates are quite good with competitive trackers. The account comes with a cheque book but you dont have to use them. The branches also have cheque book sized ledges to keep track of your...

Impressive Internet Accounts

Advantages: 24/7 access online, excellent customer service
Disadvantages: Not all accounts include offline access

...Just before Christmas 2002, I was reviewing my limited savings and decided they needed to be spruced up. They were languishing in various old bank accounts, which do not pay particularly high interest rates e.g. old student accounts. So, I thought I'd shop around on the internet. I took a look at Egg because they have become such a well-known, trusted bank. Most people will have heard of the Egg credit card (0% balance transfers for 6 months - "the card that loves you back") but they may not realise that Egg provides a whole range of standard financial products including mortgages, loans, ISAs and, crucially, savings accounts. Accounts Available Egg offers 4 different types of savings account: Internet, Investor, Standard and Cash Card. Each account offers a slightly different method of access and operation e...

SMILE CURRENT ACCOUNT: MAGDADH GOES ALL ETHICAL

Advantages: Ethical bank, good interest rates, cheap overdraft, OK site, Post Office OTC service
Disadvantages: Extortionate admin and penalty charges, can't remove overdarft, seems slow

...I will be very non-PC in this review, I am warning you. Everybody is raving about Smile, aren't they? Especially the ethically minded, politically conscious folk.... Smile IS an Internet-branch of Co-Operative bank and thus is considered to be a much better thing in ethical stakes than the let's say the corporate horror that is Barclays. But it's not all that smiley and lovely down there in Smile-land. This review relates only to the CURRENT ACCOUNT provided by Smile. There is no special category for these and general reviews seem to concentrate on that aspect of banking service. I applied for the Smile current account back then in 2000. It was fairly early days of Internet banking and most of the bricks-and-mortar banks didn't offer the on-line facility. Later on I acquired an on-line access to the Barclays account I...

The One Account works for you and saves you money

Advantages: Excellent customer service, easy to use and saves you money
Disadvantages: Easy to over spend if you are not careful

...Why I chose the One Account I started to look at changing my Mortgage a couple of years ago as I was stuck on a fixed interest rate of 6% and felt I could do a lot better. I had recently bought the house so did not have a huge amount of disposable income and had a very small savings pot (no more than £1000). I wanted a flexible rate Mortgage that I could easily manage and overpay without being penalised. I also considered the future; I wanted to start a family and knew that I would get the minimum in maternity play so I needed a facility where I could get back the overpayments on the Mortgage immediately if I needed to. I looked at several options (IF etc) and decided to apply for the One Account as it seemed to give the greatest flexibility in terms of managing the account. The application process I completed...

Step Account

Advantages: ease of use
Disadvantages: no credit line

...The Natwest, along with most other high street banks has now launched its new 'Step' account designed for people that cannot pass credit score tests. It comes with a cashcard, solo debit card and paying in book and has standing order and direct debit facility. The account can be opened without any initial funds, and the identification needed is relaxed , i.e: they will accept PROVISIONAL driving licenses, birth certificates, household bills. At my local branch, the staff wre most helpful, and my account was opened immediately, with my cards etc arriving within a week of opening the account. The best feature of this account is that you cannot spend what you have not got, but should you wish to repair your credit standing, if you manage your step account for 6 months without problems, you can upgrade it to a normal current account, which...

Nationwide flex account

Advantages: Great for foreign travel
Disadvantages: none

...The Nationwide Flex account is a great account to have if you do a lot of travelling abroad. I opened a Nationwide Flex account with one main thing in mind - ie to get a good exchange rate abroad without incuring any fees for withdrawing cash. The Nationwide Flex account debit card is the only debit card that you can use abroad to withdraw cash from ATM's and to pay for goods without paying a 'charge' for it.. (although it does state that some ATM's make a charge which is outside their control, I have never had any charges incurred.) I have used my card now three times whilst travelling abroad. The exchange rate I have been given has always been excellent - much higher than local currency exchangers, banks and other UK banks. Some banks charge up to 2.75% for buying goods or services and withdrawing cash abroad. Before going...

Review of Nationwide Building Society Accounts

The One Account

Advantages: Save money - knock years off your mortgage (I really did!)
Disadvantages: Not for you if your wages don't last a month

...We took out a One Account over four years ago and already have 'paid off' our mortgage. Basically this account is like a giant overdraft where you combine all your debts into one account and counteract this by putting in all your incomings and savings. Every penny you own/earn works to pay off your mortgage. Your 'facility' is the limit of your account or the amount you borrow on your home. You leave an amount in your account every month equal to your mortgage payment and anything extra, however small, also reduces your mortgate. If you put in your savings, this also reduces how much you owe and how much interest you pay, but you still can draw this out whenever you need. The amount you save in interest outweighs the interest you would earn having money in a savings account. You can reduce your facility as the amount you owe goes...
