...gobsmacked but very happy indeed. --Internet and Email-- The netbook uses the Firefox browser and as far as I can tell, it is exactly the same version you would expect to see on a normal desktop, laptop computer. With this in mind I wont go into too much detail here. The email client is Acers own aspire mail. This behaves like any basic email client such as Outlook Express and again, was very easy to set up to connect to my ISP (Virgin) although you do need to know the names of the POP3 and SMTP servers beforehand. For all you MSN addicts out there, the Aspire comes with its own version of messenger which is compatible with both Yahoo and MSN/Windows Live services. Advantages: Small, lightweight, great performer. Can handle some 3D games.

I decided on the Linux version of this netbook for £235, the Windows XP version is around £269. I wanted DivX support so I could watch movies at night but after a few hours looking for a suitable program and drivers I gave up. Linux isn't as straightforward as Windows and in many cases you have to open up a console and type commands when you want to install or make changes to an installation. Its base is black which gives it a two tone colour and makes it look a lot sleeker. These aren’t really designed for portability, and if you do want one for that then look at there acer travel mate range. These ones are really made for a smaller desktop replacement, and what a replacement as is will probably run as fast as your old desktop and in most cases run a lot faster if its an old one. It weighs 3 kg which is quite a lot and would be just too much for most people who needed to carry it around all day, its battery life disagrees with its lack of portability though as it can last a pretty good 3 hours or more. The Acer AspireOne; good, but could be better.

Advantages: Small and portable. Has a good messenger.
Disadvantages: Can't download anything, and does not have a CD drive. Also is fairly low on memory

...I bought the acer one as it seemed a good buy, it was cheap and fulfilled all my basic needs, which as a teenager are basically to be able to get online and use a messenger, which this laptop does definitly allow me to do. The messenger is very good, allowing you to sign into multiple accounts on one messenger. Meaning you can sign onto your yahoo messenger and MSN at the same time, always useful. The system is also very quick at loading and runs smoothly. I can get online within a minute of turning on, which definitly beats my desktop. The only things I found I was disappointed with was the fact I cannot download games etc., use iTunes, or play CD's, but as it cost so little, it is very hard to complain. I wouldnt recommend this to anyone who needs to do a lot of work or business based things, but for basic needs such as browsing...

Cheap Desktop Replacement

...have had virtually no problems with it and I've never had to call Acer up with any issues. If you need any firmware or drivers they are all on the acer website so you don't really need to ring acer if you have a missing driver, just get on the web. This laptop would be great for anyone looking for a mid range desktop replacement or their own personal laptop for work and games. The laptop is ideal if your on a medium sized budget and if you are wanting a future proof laptop. The laptop is vista capable and this means you can buy vista and upgrade your machine by yourself. The laptop has served me well and I fully recommend it to anyone with a £600 budget that is looking for a good modern laptop. Thanks for reading!...
