I was a tenant of Acorn's for five years, so I feel I am now in a position to offer a detailed, long-term perspective on the company and what it is really like to be one of their clients. Mrs Overall Rides Again!

Advantages: Funny, great acting and brilliantly comic songs
Disadvantages: Overlong, large chunk should be cut

...I rented this just to see what Victoria Wood had done with the show but to be honest I didn't expect much out of it as TV comedy doesn't often transfer well to the stage. However, aside from a fairly boring 15-20 min segment I was really impressed despite it running at just over 2 ½ hours. Acorn Antiques started out as a segment in one of Victoria Wood's TV shows. It was a parody of Crossroads, featuring wobbly sets, props that didn't work or weren't in the right place, bad camera work and bad acting. The main characters were Miss Babs played by Celia Imrie, Miss Berta played by Victoria Wood, Mr Clifford played by Duncan Preston and Mrs Overall played by Julie Walters. PIPE DREAMS AND ACORNS...

Advantages: Addicitve!!!, good fun, make money!!!
Disadvantages: Addictive!!!Can get caught out by fraudulent dealers!

Manchesterford Meets Oklahoma

...Who would have thought that a comedy sketch which lampooned hammy TV classics such as 'Crossroads' could make it as a West End show? Certainly not me, but this DVD changed my mind. A little bit of the history: Acorn Antiques started out as a mini-soap, running weekly on 'Victoria Wood?as seen on TV' in 1985 and told the tale of Acorn Antiques, a shop in the small town of Manchesterford. The soap centred around the lives and loves of Miss Babs (Celia Imrie), Miss Berthe (Victoria Wood), Mr Clifford (Duncan Preston) and Mrs Overall (the brilliant Julie Walters). Advantages: Tasty, dark and complex.
Disadvantages: Not to everyone's taste.

The hilarious world of antiques!

Advantages: 13 of the best sketches around

...I first became aware of the Acorn Antiques sketches on Channel 4?s 100 Greatest Comedy Sketches, it rated highly on it, and the couple of minutes of footage that was shown made me laugh so hard, I instantly became a fan! I started to hunt for any DVD?s that would include these hilarious sketches, I was aware that they came from the TV show ?Victoria Wood As Seen On TV? but I couldn?t find a DVD of it. Then a few months later I found that they were releasing one dedicated to all the Acorn Antiques sketches, I brought it, and I was not disappointed. My Kettle Is On And I'm Making Acorn Coffee! (A. Vogel Bambu)

Advantages: Excellent taste and caffeine free.
Disadvantages: A little expensive.

...I am going to tell you why I drink acorns, mad but totally delicious, and very good for you! Regular readers of my reviews will know that I have M E. This means that I cannot tolerate much caffeine. I can have the odd coffee, but more than that and it has dire consequences on my heart rhythm. Many years predating getting this disease I was really interested in the alternative coffee substitutes, mainly because I found the rows of them lined up in health food stores to be fascinating, and so it has been my delight to enjoy a drink called Bambu for many years. Bambu is made by A Vogel and contains organically grown Chicory, Wheat, Malted Barley, Figs, Cereals, and of course Acorns, and nothing else. Excellent time - and really useful!

Advantages: Great experience, horizon-broadening.
Disadvantages: Perhaps food, but there were plenty of other places to eat.

...I went to Boulogne-sur-Mer just over two years ago with Acorn Educational exchanges. I was part of a group of about thirty students all studying A-level French. We stayed in an excellent FUAJ youth hostel there which was very conmfortable, although the food left a lot to be desired, but it was cheap so you couldn't complain. Acorn placed each student in a business in the town so that they could get language experience working there. To be honest, I did very little work where I was placed but I got lots of language experience chating to the customers, and learnt a few words that I probably shouldn't have! I would recommend this company to any student studying a language for A level. The work was inportant, of course, but I made some very good friends from the group was there and had a wonderful time....

Great Hangovers from Little Acorns Grow

Advantages: Great for wildlife, and some of life's wilder moments
Disadvantages: Just a tad on the big side for most gardens

...I do have other interests besides gardening and alcohol. For example . . . well . . . er . . Okay, let?s just concentrate on these two for the moment. And be thankful that they are so integrated. But of course this is a gardening op, so let me turn your attention to those majestic trees which from little acorns grow. And indeed they are majestic, which is why oak is generally an unsuitable tree for a smaller garden. Two which remain in manageable proportions are Quercus pontica (Armenian Oak), an oval-headed tree with very long leaves, and Quercus ilicifolia, which has smaller leaves, dark green above and greyish below. The latter gives particularly good autumn colour. Both grow to only about 6m (20ft), both are deciduous, and neither is particularly tolerant of exposed conditions.
