Give her a SEXY LITTLE SOMETHING
Review of Van Cleef & Arpels First by
whitewiner
Advantages: Individual, distinctive, feminine and sexy.
Disadvantages: Need to choose carefully when to wear!
...First is recommended for romantic use and represents the finest in brand name designer perfume, a distinctive highly sensual, really earthy feminine pefume that oozes sexuality, a truly individual perfume that has a character all of its own.
I remember asking a close friend five years ago now what the beautiful perfume was she was wearing, "it is 'first'" she replied "Princes Di uses it, but I discovered it by chance.." Well that was it I was hooked, my favourite scents paled into insignificance, and after much 'hinting' my husband bought me my 'First' for christmas and it is my favourite pefume, streets above anyting else I have used before or have been given.
First is so named because it was the first perfume from the celebrated jewellers, Van Cleef & Arpels. It is a fruity, floral perfume from 1976 with notes of jasmine, rose...

Adrien Brody is The Pianist
Review of The Pianist DVD by
Gamedude
Advantages: Acting, directing and story
Disadvantages: None
...Adrien Brody is the "Pianist" Roman Polanski's acclaimed hit from 2002. At first glance, there isn't really too much that sets apart this movie from others with the same theme.
The Pianist is about a polish pianist, Wladyslaw Szpilman (Brody), whose Jewish family is separated and like many others , executed under the regime of Adolf Hitler and Germans, better known as the Third Reich.
The Third Reich basically had an extremely racist view against the Jews and exterminated them, since they blamed them for many of Germany's problems.
As I said before, movies on the Holocaust are abound,"The Diary of Anne Frank", "Schindler's List" are probably the most recognized movies on this topic. The Pianist therefore had major shoes to fill and to be quite honest, the Pianist doesn't quite deliver the same type of impact that the movies I...

Don't shoot the Piano-player
Review of The Pianist DVD by
FlameDruid
Advantages: This brings history starkly into focus
Disadvantages: It's mostly very depressing
...Adrien Brody plays Wladyslaw Szpilman, a Jewish pianist in this chilling film by Roman Polanski. His suffering and that of his family and, of course, other Polish Jews during WWII at the hands of the Nazis is awful to behold. It's very sobering and although violence in films is probably more commonplace and more widely accepted these days, this is most definitely not a movie for children to see. This isn't the stylish violence of 'The Terminator' or the sharp-shooting Clint Eastwood type. It's brutal; it comes quickly; it happens routinely and frequently, and most of all it's largely deadly and delivered with psychotic and ruthless efficiency.
I'm not going to reveal very much plot as the events of World War II are part of history even though there are crackpot extremists who deny the Holocaust to this day because it doesn't sit well...

Lest we forget...
Review of The Pianist DVD by
aussiejoe
Advantages: Very moving, sickening and well written and acted film
Disadvantages: Probably overshadowed by 'Schindler's List'
...Adrien Brody, an Academy Award and Bafta winner, stars in this harrowing drama about the holocaust in Poland, perhaps the new 'Schindler's List'.
Brody plays Wladyslaw Szpilman, an excellent Jewish pianist living in Warsaw at the time of the outbreak of World War Two. The Nazis come in to take over the country and soon impose the restrictions on Jewish lifestyle that history will not, nor should it ever, let us forget. Szpilman's family are moved to the ghetto and live in poverty under the disgusting rule of the Nazis.
When the ghetto is liquidated by the Germans, Szpilman is offered an escape from deportation by a friend in the local police and goes into hiding, trying only to survive.
'The Pianist' tells the story of Szpilman's plight and eventual salvation - this salvation, however, leaves him in a world devoid of his family...

Devil's spawn party in town
Review of Little Nicky (Wide Screen) by
Simoncook1
Advantages: Very well done special effects
Disadvantages: Poor plot
...There are many movies that have been released recently that involve Satan and his presence on Earth. They portray a reality in which an avatar is used to affect the real world. Little Nicky is a comedy version of many of these movies; instead of the Devil appearing, we instead have the Devil's spawn.
<The Movie>
Satan (Harvey Kietel) is just about to finish a 10,000-year reign in Hades. Calling his sons together he informs them that he doesn't believe any of them are fit to rule Hades yet and has decided to continue to rule for another 10,000 years. Each of the sons has their own reaction:
Adrien (Rhys Ifans - recently in the movie Replacements) is the cunning, intelligent and handsome son. He is very angry with his father and is determined to rule.
Cassius (Tom Lister) is a brute of a man; strong, muscular...

Hits all the right notes
Review of The Pianist DVD by
l-m-n-o-p
Advantages: Very emotional and powerful, great acting
Disadvantages: Drags towards the end
...?
Comparisons are obviously going to made between this, and the most famous film about the Holocaust, Schindler's List. Whilst The Pianist lacks some of the emotional force and epic storytelling of Spielberg's fantastic movie, it still remains a beautiful, sad and shocking film. Both films are based on true stories, and both reveal the events in horrible, gruesome detail.
Adrien Brody gives the performance of his career as Szpilman, deservingly winning the Best Actor Oscar in 2002. His turn as the talented yet fragile musician is completely captivating, and provides the driving force of the film. We watch as he loses his family, and the scene in which he walks, crying, through the deserted ghetto, is very emotional. He deals with the situation with courage, managing to find his way through due to will-power and sheer good luck. He almost...

A Unique, Original, and One-of-a-Kind Cult Movie
Review of Liquid Sky by
eve6kicksass
Advantages: A one-of-a-kind, original film that paints (no pun attended) a perfect picture of the seedy setting
Disadvantages: An extremely dated film and obviously not for every taste
...soundtrack, made up mostly of synthesizers and sounding like a cross between disco and techno. We then get a picture of the underground punk scene with an array of characters who have their faces in heavy, though colorful, makeup. We meet Jimmy, a gay male model who is out looking for some heroin, Adrien, a foul-mouthed lesbian who sells heroin in her interestingly decorated Manhattan penthouse and Margaret, her on-and-off again lover who loves to do heroin and have sex with other partners (though not always with her approval). When this UFO (which looks like a neon frisbee to some people) lands on top of Adrien's penthouse, when first see it then capture heroin being induced in another apartment.
At this point, I have to mention what is probably the film's most stunning element: its imagery. We see the alien, and yet we don't. It...

What really happened to George Reeves?
Review of Hollywoodland DVD by
IzzyS
Advantages: Interesting story based on real life event, good cast, stylish, decent bonus features on DVD
Disadvantages: A bit slow for some perhaps, may not appeal to all, ending may disappoint
...) -
Hollywoodland opens up with police at the scene of George Reeves presumed suicide in 1959.
Next, we're introduced to Louis Simo (played by Adrien Brody), who's a private detective that finds out through people from his old agency that George's mum believes his death wasn't suicide and had tried to hire the agency but they didn't want to touch such a case, so Louis decides to grudgingly take it on.
Through various flashbacks, we're taken back in time to when George was alive, when his career first started to slow down. Here George is played by Ben Affleck.
The movie follows Louis trying to determine if there is any substance to claims of foul play in George's death, while flashback scenes also appear, giving an insight into what went on with him, un-knowingly sleeping with the head of MGM, Edgar Mannix (Bob Hoskins)'s wife, Toni (played...
