The book thats saved a million students
Review of Engineering Mathematics by K.A. Stroud by  Jon_Farrimond

Advantages: Comprehensive, cheap, easy to use, understandable
Disadvantages: little on Matrices or Matrix manipulation.

...; Advanced Engineering Mathematics : Stroud Modern Engineering Mathematics : James Or something specifically for your course. One thing I would say though is that if your trying to learn a topic it will take you a while and this book has no chapters on Matrices, but they are easy anyway and that sort of info can be found reliably online easily.... Great addition to anyone's study/revision arsenal
Review of Further Engineering Mathematics by K.A. Stroud by  amine666

Advantages: They've done it again. Another great book for those who want more
Disadvantages: Some pure mathematicians may find it less challenging

...Engineering Mathematics by K A STOUD has a partner in crime!! This book is for the further development of your mathematical knowledge. Whereas ENGINEERING MATHEMATICS provides a sound foundation and syudy aid for first year mech eng students, the purpose of this book is essentially to provide a sound second year course in mathematics appropriate to studies leading to BSc/BEng. As you would expect, this edition includes further topics for study. The text is still well set out and does not assume that the reader is already a master of the principles. I found it quite easy to read from the further maths book even though I had not yet completed the initial engineering mathematics textbook yet. With the same series of self-instructional programmes, the reader is able to have a goal, work through it and then review his or her... Read review

The private tutor i couldn't afford
Review of Engineering Mathematics by K.A. Stroud by  Boris

Advantages: Great Value, Very clear, easy to understand, You can pass exams, earn more money, buy more beer
Disadvantages: You might not find it useful but everyone I know does

...As someone studying for an engineering degree this book has proved invaluable. it starts at the basic components of A-Level Mathematics and works it way through a large portion of the maths needed for a first year engineering course. The book is divided into programmes so it works similarly to a lectured course. it directs the reader to answer certain questions and achieve the correct answers before progressing. it seems like an overly-simplistic approach but it does work. The first part of the book is composed of 10 programmes, all of them foundation topics. It is intended to cement or supplement the general core elements for all A-Level Maths syllabi required for use in engineering capacities. 1. Number Systems - denary, binary etc.. explained and how to approximate 2. Arithmetic and Algebra - introduction to algenbraic... Read review

Mathematics at OU
Review of Mathematics by  q0620228

Advantages: Great courses, taught professionally at a distance
Disadvantages: Sometimes can be too distant, so you need to get to know your tutor group.

...The Open University offers a comprehensive "entry suite" which allows students of all standards to start off on their career at the OU. The suite is the start off for not only mathematics, but engineering, chemistry, etc. I, myself, missed out MU120 (the first of the three courses), as my previous experience stood me in good stead for the other two. The others MST121 & MS221 can either be taken together or in seperate years. I did both earlier this year, and found the workload to be reasonable, although I did need to manage my time carefully sometimes. MST121 & MS221 give a general grounding on the basics of mathematics, and so cover a lot of topics in little time. But this is done with care, to ensure that no student gets lost or overwhelmed. My only complaint was that the course books were very "wordy" at times... Read review

MEng Aeronautical Engineering @ Imperial College
Review of Aeronautical Engineering by  samwolf

Advantages: Good numerate degree from excellent establishment
Disadvantages: Hard work, poorly organised department at times.

...I have been at Imperial studying Aeronautical Engineering for over 2 years now, and though I have the odd complaint, I certainly don't have any regrets so far. Firstly, I would not recommend the course to someone who is simply looking for a degree about aeroplanes - I can assure you it isn't, and I can count the number of instances that aeroplanes have been mentioned so far on one hand. Sure, there's the opportunity to go down that route from the third year onwards, but to get that far a lot of work is required, and many people do drop out on the way. The first two years consist of compulsory core subjects including a rigorous mathematics course, along with aerodynamics, structures, computing, materials, and other subjects generally associated with an engineering course. Unfortunately, there isn't a great opportunity for hands... Read review

Mathematics with Teaching
Review of Mathematics, Science & Technological Education by  Craigy_B

Advantages: Gets you earning money earlier
Disadvantages: Summer holidays are shorter

...Ever thought about being a mathematics teacher ? I know it may sound like a strange career path to some people but teaching is a very rewarding profession and mathematics is far more interesting than many people think. If you have thought of this as a possible career then read on and see how Strathclyde University can help you. Since 1995 the University of Strathclyde has ran a Maths with Teaching Qualification course. This course is different to the usual - do your degree then a post grad year on a teacher training course - as you do both your maths degree and teacher training at the same time. I graduated from this course in the year 2000 so have first hand knowledge of the pros and cons of Maths with Teaching. Advantages - The ordinary degree course lasts 3 1/2 years while the honours course is 4 1/2 years meaning you can... Read review

Mathematics is wonderful when taught well
Review of Mathematics For The Millions - Lancelot Hogben by  angusmc100

Advantages: It is Essential reading
Disadvantages: None

...This book is a wonder ,any mathematicians ,physicists or historians out there that haven't read it, and those who struggled at maths in school ,will find the subject rekindled in this wonderful old book ,which has been re-published. This book really is a classic read ,it gives a vast amount of information on mathematics which I have never read anywhere else. Einstein gives his very own Ciao opinion on the back of the book .Yes arguably the most intelligent man on the planet himself read the book and rated it very highly indeedy. There is a wee bit in here for everyone ,interested in anything that is why it is difficult to categorize, but everything has a maths feel about it, and certainly that is the recurring theme in the book. However there are snippets of interest about shells and why they are formed that way ,which would... Read review

CGP Revision Guide - GCSE Mathematics AQA Modular
Review of CGP GCSE Mathematics AQA Modular Specification The Revision Guide Higher Level - Richard Parsons by  matty0501

Advantages: Colourful, Fun, Useful
Disadvantages: It's revision

...a mathematical answer. For example 'What is the method for writing a number to three significant figures?' These questions do not have answers at the back. You are expected to search through the book if you don't know. However, at the bottom of most pages is something called 'The Acid Test'. These questions test you about what you have just read. There are three or four questions, and these include answers at the back. These questions involve working something out, so I find these more useful. My Opinion I find this book extremely useful for my exam revision. It includes everything I need to know, meaning I know that I haven't missed something out. The information is presented in a fun way, meaning that I don't get too bored when revising. It also means that I remember the stuff. In the two previous exams, I got A*s. I was two marks off the top... Read review

The Personal Tutor for 1st/2nd Year Eng Students
Review of Engineering Mathematics by K.A. Stroud by  amine666

Advantages: Clear, concise, yet remarkably challenging. It's like having a personal tutor
Disadvantages: Those with superior maths/further maths skills may find it less helpful

...As a 3rd year Mechanical Engineering student at UCL I have found this textbook to be the most useful textbook in my study and revision arsenal. Although engineers are required to cover and learn a great deal of math concepts, they must more importantly be able to apply them in everyday problems with confidence. This is where this particular book is heads and shoulders above the rest. Instead of assuming that the reader is already a master of all the theory, it walks them through the ideas and principles. In doing this, the chapters also concentrate on the core principles and cut-away the less relevant issues regarding specific topics. Just like a personal tutor, the book sets out goals at the beginning , checks on them at various stages throughout the topic chapter (with challenges along the way) and reviews the findings...
