Advent-ageous To Have
Advantages: Plenty of good quality features
Disadvantages: none for what you pay for
...With my desktop computer going a bit haywire with all the useless downloads I have on it, and the prospect of university looming in the next few months, I persuaded my parents to buy me a laptop because I would be needing one in a few months anyway, and with my desktop PC being so slow, it did not take much for them to be persuaded!
Our trek began…I drove to my local Staples branch as I knew they had ex-demo laptops going cheap, only to find ten seconds earlier someone had bought the one I was looking at. So, I drove to Gillingham to PC world, bit of motorway practice for me, a break from driving for my dad. Here we were greeted by a friendly man who knew nothing about laptops but did know everything about printers… we bought the laptop of him anyhow.
The Advent 5480 came with a wide range of features, and I was told...

Advent has arrived
Advantages: Very fast, lots of memory
Disadvantages: not experienced any as yet
...OK, my computer died a couple of weeks ago...tragic it was, after I'd become so attached to it. Still I got over it very quickly, being consoled by the presence of a nice shiny new model.
So what is my nice shiny new model then, do I hear you ask? Or have you already figured that out by the product description of this here review.

Advent 3070
Advantages: It is a good system
Disadvantages: Only 2 USB ports (at the back?) Soundcard, Graphics card could have been better.
...I purchased my Advent 3070 9 months ago from PCWorld. My previous computers had been home constructed affairs, however, when you buy a Motherboard from this Co. Memory from that Co. Periferals from a variety of others and you experience problems finding some faults can be very awkward as each tries to blame the other. So I ended up selecting something with reasonable power. I also wanted a Digital Camera, Scanner and Printer all with Buy now - Pay 9 months later. So to that end it had to be a one-time buy System.
Within the first month I had a HDD failure, and to be fair to PCWorld they repaired it PDQ and replaced the 30Gb with a better 40Gb for my trouble.
I also bought a re-writer, as I have a heap of LP's I want to burn to CD's. The machine came with 128MB as standard memory, which I am considering upgrading to 256MB as...

The Advent of Power, Quality and Price
Advantages: Power, Quality, Price
Disadvantages: Mismatched colour on fascia of CDRom Drive
...P.C. World's own brand laptop computers would, you suspect have to be of a superior quality and build. In order to claim being the UK's No.1 supplier of computers and accessories they would also have to be able to supply the latest technology at a realistic price.
The reason Laptops have not as yet become the industry standard for home computing is the Cost, quality of Screen and poor performance of battery power.
PCW's Advent Laptop machines appear to have overcome many of these problems. With competition between retailers and the slump in world sales (against projected figures) causing overproduction, we, the buyers, are benefiting from an enormous drop in retail prices.
The Advent 6413 gains strides over the competition through being powered by a 1Ghz Pentium III chip. This chip, fixed to a Fujitsu AT Board and coupled...

You don't need the advert to save on the Advent
Advantages: sleek design, nice overall feel, bright, wide screen, good price
Disadvantages: trackpad a little over-sensitive, CPU not latest, dodgy support
...Advent is the PCWorld/Dixons own brand, the shipping box in fact says Dixons even though I got mine from PCW. It's been available for around the £500 mark online but somewhat more in store (most recently £550). When I saw it marked at '£500 voucher price' I figured it was worth asking 'what voucher'. After the usual ten minute wait to find someone who knew anything, a mangement type said it was an advert in The Sun, of all places, but no, I didn't actually need the voucher for real, they could do it at £500 for anybody cheeky enough to ask.
Fair enough, I thought, because it had a nice bright widescreen and seemed of very decent build quality, in my price range only the Packard Bells seemed more sturdily built, and they lost out on various spec/price points, notably the similarly priced ones were not widescreen.
So far I've been...

A true portable powerhouse
Advantages: Power. Style. Lightweight. CDRW/DVD Combo drive. Fast. Dedicated AGP graphics card with 16MB DDR memory. Not too expensive compared to most other notebooks. Plenty of expansion/add-on ports
Disadvantages: The lack of a floppy drive may be a disadvantage to some, but not to me
...23/06/2002 Impportant Price Note!
On a recent visit to Dixons in Belfast I came across the Advent 7006 (the rebrand of mine) for £1197, which is a great reduction of £302! If you're after a great laptop, then this is a perfect chance to get a powerhouse for peanuts!
I’ve finally bought a nice shiny new notebook pc after about 3 years of deep thought! It was only by pure chance that I spotted my new toy on a recent visit to everyone’s favourite pc store – PC World (don’t even think about it!), where I’d gone to price a few components for a friend. I was looking for hard drive prices & also for a new LCD monitor for my pc. Whilst wandering around the isles I came to the notebook/portable pc isle & stopped to see what was on offer. After a good look at the various models, I took a shine to the Advent 7002, which was a new range...

All the power in a small case.
Advantages: A true portable powerhouse.
Disadvantages: Battery can be a bit poor when using the DVD or Cd/RW.
...The Advent 6422 is truly an amazing value for money, portable computer.
I had been looking at Laptop’s for about three years, I liked the way they were so small and still had the capacity of a large desktop computer but in a more minute form.
Anyway, I had got myself a new job and had earned myself enough money to buy my dream computer, so off I went to look at various places. In total I visited about different shops, 5 on the high street and 3 on the Internet and I found that the Dixons group (Dixons, Currys and PC World) to offer the most competitive prices. There own range Advent stood out as the most competitively priced and after much debate I set my heart on the 6422 model. It looked very nice in it’s silver/blue colour and had an excellent spec. I managed to collar a sales person who gave me the best deal imaginable...
