Nestles After Eight, or at anytime
Advantages: A rich bittersweet mint fondant cream
Disadvantages: None
...Tradition is very hard to ignore and each year there are some traditions that we all follow religiously classing it as almost irreverent to do otherwise.
Without fail at the beginning of every December we all flock to the supermarkets in our droves to buy the celebratory goodies that we MUST have, in case an unexpected visitor should turn up at the front door and demand that hazelnut whirl that we inadvertently forgot to buy.
So traditionally our cupboard should harbour at least one tin of Cadburys Roses or Nestle Quality Street, a family sized bag of KP Salted nuts, a box of Eat Me Dates, a box of Jacobs Cheeselets, a net of mixed nuts with shells intact and don?t ever forget to pick up the box of After Eight mints, a tradition in themselves.
Never mind that we start off in January with a host of unwanted strawberry and coffee...

After Eights very moreish
Advantages: A British institution brilliant
Disadvantages: You wont stop eating them
...Nestle After Eights are so so good. These are a national institution and are mandatory in our house at Christmas time.
For anybody that doesn't know these they are wafer thin dark chocolates with a mint sticky cream in the middle. And the combination of the two together works brilliantly. They are square about 3cm x 3cm and they come in a long box and each delicious one is in its own dark envelope.
The dark chocolate seems to be very high quality and melts really quickly as they are so thin. When they melt in your mouth the mint and dark chocolate just mix in together. As the name says they are meant to be eaten after 8 o'clock at night or after dinner and they are perfect when you have had a really nice dinner and just want something small and sweet.
We actually store them in the fridge before we eat them and it really...

After Eight Chocs
Advantages: Super taste, quality assured
Disadvantages: One is never enough
...When I was a child, we used to have these chocolates as a special treat usually at Christmas time. I always thought they were a special and probably very expensive too. They always remind me as elegant Dinner Parties and by gone days.
After Eight's have been made by Nestle since 1962. They originally were made in 300g boxes, but since then the company have expanded the range and it now includes a 150g bag, After Eight straws, blocks and bit size.
Packaging
This seems timeless itself. It is an elegant rectangular box, with stylish After Eight on every side but the bottom. It is on a dark green background that presumably signifies night time. It clearly shows the nutrition information on one side.
There is no danger of the box opening as it is protected by a clear film that must be removed before it can be opened. And unlike...

After Eight chocolate Ice Cream Cones!
Advantages: Chocolate, mint and ice cream
Disadvantages: The cone is a bit chewy
...This past week I just found an amazing dessert/snack treat that I just had to share with everyone so if you love chocolate and mint and ice cream then read on.
According to various articles I have read, "Rich in British heritage, After Eight is known as England's finest mint."
After Eight's now produce an ice cream cone with After Eight mint chocolate included. I found a pack of 6 ice cream cones for £2 in Sainsburys which I though was an absolute bargain as generally one ice cream cone from a van or a speciality shop costs £2 or more.
Made by Nestlé, the original After Eight chocolates were mint-flavoured thins designed and advertised as an after-dinner mint, hence the product's name.
Each cone is 100g. Now this is actually quite small but after eating one you did feel like you'd had a nice dessert without pigging out...

It's Never Too Late For An After Eight!
Advantages: Very Tasty
Disadvantages: One Is Never Enough
...If there is one thing that is as predictable as rain on a Bank Holiday weekend then it was receiving a box of After Eight Mints from my Grandma for Christmas. Nestle After Eight Mints are the subject of my latest review and for me this choice is quite poignant as my Gran sadly died a few weeks ago so not only will this be a lonely Christmas this year without her, it looks like it could be my first Christmas without a box of these wonderful chocolate mints too.
The Background
After Eight mints are made by Nestle and were launched back in 1963. Today they are sold in over 60 different countries worldwide and are the biggest selling mint chocolate in the UK and also the biggest selling in the world.
The Product Range
Following the initial success of the After Eight Dinner Mints Nestle introduced a whole range of other products...

Nestle After Eight Mint Thins
Advantages: Very tasy!
Disadvantages: Hard to eat just one
...I can remember After Eight Mint Chocolates from when I was a child. They were new and ever so slightly exotic, I seem to remember.
They were Rowntree's After Eight Mint Chocolates. But due to International conglomerate take-overs, they are now made by the Swiss-based firm, Nestle. Or Nestles as the we politically incorrect like to call it. Anyway, Nestles themselves started the Nestles thing off. Remember the adverts for the Milkybar Kid? "The Milkybar Kid is strong and tough?" Why? Because he ate "Nestles Milkybar". They pronounced it Nestles in the advert, not Nestle, with the character over the last e. But I digress.
After Eight Thin Chocolate Mints come in a long rectangular box, and each chocolate is individually placed in its own individual rather stylish open-topped black paper holder.
Each After Eight Thin Chocolate Mint...

It's always After Eight ...
Advantages: They're made of chocolate!
Disadvantages: None
...I was recently given a box of these for my birthday and I have to admit they didn't last long! After Eights have always been one of my favourites as I love mint chocolates, so I thought it was about time I reviewed them!
I'm sure most people have tried After Eights at some point, whether it has been with a coffee at a restaurant or from a box at a friend's house so I won't insult you by describing them in the minutest detail, but I'll try and give my own opinion of them. I can't remember when I first tried these delicious chocolates; I must have been quite young because I remember receiving them as a gift when I was still at school. So here goes - my tribute to After Eights!

Not just for after Eight...
Advantages: Delicious After Eight Experience, excellent value for money
Disadvantages: There aren't bigger bars...
...I'm sure many of you share my sentiment when I say that I have a guilty love for chocolate. Imagine my horror therefore, when, after two years of poor digestive health, various doctors advised me last week to give up dairy, which unfortunately ruled out delicious chocolate. Unperturbed however, I decided allowances could definitely be made for plain and dark chocolate. This is when the After Eight Dark Chocolate Bar came in. Now I don't know about you, but I can happily munch my way through boxes of After Eight Mints, and also there gorgeous mint straws, so a new opportunity to try some After Eights products seemed too good to miss. After a quick scan of the ingredients did not reveal that they were a dairy free item, there was a warning that this product may contain traces of milk - well if it's only a possibility, that's fine for me...

Why wait til after Eight
Advantages: Less pacakging than traditional After Eight
Disadvantages: None it's chocolate
...After Eight Straws
After eight Straws come in two flavours that I have found, Grand Marnier and the traditional mint. The first time I bought them was in a 4 pack for over Christmas, this was the first time I had actually seen them in the shops. In the pack of 4 were two cylinders of the Grand Marnier and tow cylinders of the Mint. I haven't seen the Grand Marnier ones since Christmas though.
I have bought them since but always separately. If I bought a pack of 4 I would eat them all in about 2 days, which is not good for the waste line. So I have now restricted myself to only buying one packet at a time, when we are having guests for dinner.
They are the perfect accompaniment to coffee at the end of the meal just as the traditional mints are.
The Packaging:
The straws come in a cylindrical cardboard tube, the mint ones are...

After Eights, Jim...but not as we know them!!
Advantages: Intense mint chocolate flavour
Disadvantages: Not as high quality as the originals
...I have to admit to having a problem with the structure and direction of this review, because whilst the Straws themselves are great and very "moreish", I have always found the idea of these Straws to be a slight "dumbing down" of the classic After Eight mints, and to being slightly concerned that this is what the future holds from Nestle.
The classic square After Eight mints have been in production since the 1960's, effectively defining the idea of "after dinner mints" to the general population. Whilst the presentation of the standard mints has changed very little in that time (the crispy outer shell, slightly liquid fondant centre, the individual wrappings and the trademark green box changing very little over the years), Nestle have tried to vary the product from time to time with a range of boxed chocolates and drinks. However...
